3. Courier was created by Howard Kettler in 1955, and the
main source of Howard’s inspiration for this was taken
from the style of typeface that is used on a
traditional type writer; which was first thought of as
an invention back in 1572. Even though Courier is
mainly identified as the exact font used for
typewriters, Kettler simply took his inspiration from
the shape and style of the type, he didn’t duplicate.
To develop on from Kettler’s creation, the font was
then developed/redrawn by Adrian Frutiger, especially
for the use in electric typewriters that were part of
the ’IBM Selectric Composer Series’.
Origins of the Courier font
4. With relation to the use of Courier by IBM, they
decided against securing legal exclusivity to the
font, even though themselves as a company had
commissioned it in the first place. Because of this,
the Courier font can be widely used by anyone, as it
does not seek any legal restrictions like copyright
and trademarking, in terms of its usage. Frutiger
first remade this font back in 1961, and since then,
it has become a very popular font to use not just in
other typewriter models, but also by millions of
people around the world for personal use; including
letters, art creations, and typing up documents.

Kettler said that ‘a letter

Hollywood scripts
were written in 12
pt Courier up until
2004.
Courier’s country of
origin is the United
States.
14 pt Times New Roman
replaced Courier for
Hollywood scripts, based
on the grounds it was
deemed ‘more professional
looking’.
