‘Soho in 50 Years’
commisioned by BAM & Great Portland Estates
The designs of Westminster Kingsway College students’ will be featured on hoardings surrounding a
property development site in Soho, central London.
The College was invited to submit students’ design ideas to form a display that tells the stories of Soho. The
winning designs will stay on the hoardings in Broadwick Street until August 2016. It has been estimated that
400,000 people will walk past the display on a daily basis.
18 Students from Westminster Kingsway College UAL Level 3 Art Design and Media course submitted de-
signs based on the Graphic Designer, Jack Lightfoot using the theme “Soho in 50 Years”. The design project
has been sponsored by construction company, Bam UK Ltd and Property developers, Great Portland Estates.
Students presented their ideas to Great Portland Estates. The three winning students in the competition were:
in 1st place, Zoe Yibowei, 2nd place, Shyanne Watson and in 3rd place, Sara Pereira. All three of the students
will have their designs displayed on the hoardings.

Sara Pereira
“The project ‘Soho in 50 years’
was a great experience for me
as it gave me an insight into
the professional world. I was
first pitching my design in
front of an impressive judg-
ing panel to get then the third
prize. I still can’t believe that
my work will be displayed on
a hoarding wall in the middle
of Soho! Finally the last bit
of excitement was when one
of the judges contacted me to
buy ‘The Red guitar’. It was an
honour to deliver my piece of
art to my first client.”
Tariq Cain Isaac
“For the first image I took
inspiration from the records
shop in Soho as I found the
neon sign very inspirational
and eye catching so I felt like
incorporating it into my work
to show the more neon/bright
side of Soho.”
“For the second image it was more
of an experiment of me trying to
create a logo for Soho and adding a
disintegrating affect too it.”
Zoe Yibowei
“I wanted to focus on the musi-
cal history of Soho, using genres
such as Jazz, Funk and Disco.
These genres have iconic, ge-
ometric imagery, such as vinyl
records, which I think translate
well into posters and give me
alot of room to experiment. I
wanted to also include referenc-
es to the party and club scenes
by including items such as con-
fetti. Another important factor
is the consideration of Soho’s
ethnic diversity, and as such I
have included images of all races
to signify celebration in union.”
Students went to Soho on Monday 28th September to get inspired for their project
and took selfies to immortalise their presence there ...

The students were delighted and honoured to work
on such a prestigious and inspiring project that test-
ed their creative skills and ability to work to a pro-
fessional portfolio.
We would like to thank BAM UK Ltd and Great
Portland Estates for giving our students the oppor-
tunity to contribute to this exciting new develop-
ment.
