The Pollux project aims to reduce development time and costs for electric vehicles through creating a common reference architecture for distributed embedded systems. This includes real-time middleware and multi-core hardware. The project addresses reference designs and architectures to offer standardized, interoperable approaches for electric vehicles. This will boost competitiveness in the automotive, semiconductor and embedded systems sectors while addressing cost and reliability bottlenecks.
1. POLLUX
E XE C UTI VE summary
Pollux will reduce the development time and cost of the complex, high-
reliability mechatronic systems needed for the mass deployment of electric
vehicles through the creation of a common reference architecture for
distributed embedded systems, including real-time middleware and multi-
core hardware.
RE LE VANCE C AL L 2008 objectives
Pollux addresses the industrial priority area of reference designs and
architectures in order to offer common architectural approaches
(standardised and interoperable) for Electric Vehicles according to
AUTOSAR® guidelines, reducing computational effort, and targeting high
levels of reusability, reliability and dependability of systems, thus reducing
development time and costs.
MAR KE T innovation
Electrified mobility, like renewable energy, is showing some 40% annual
growth worldwide, driven by the need to reduce primary energy consumption
and greenhouse gas emissions while improve road transport safety and
the constraints of raw material scarcity. The Pollux project, addressing the
development of a standard reference technology platform for electric vehicle
design, will boost the competitiveness of industries in the EU and member states,
particularly in the semiconductor, embedded systems and automotive sectors.
At the same time Pollux will address the most relevant automotive industry
bottlenecks related to the cost and the reliability of electronic architectures.

T E C H NI C AL innovation
The new electric vehicle architectures based on distributed embedded computing
and electronics system will allow significant energy saving, with enhanced fun-to-
drive, safety and comfort, thus decreasing the overall complexity of the vehicle:
> Embedding fail-safe concepts and devices while removing unnecessary
redundancy
> Development of automotive compliant parallel-computing/real-time and
secure platforms and operating systems
> Support for the development of multi-core microcontroller chips
> Smart domain partitioning into autonomous sub-systems and multi-layer
domain abstraction
> Standardisation of architectures, hardware components and software in
compliance with AUTOSAR ® guidelines.
The low level control system of the next generation Electric Vehicles will
form the“basal brain”and the“nervous system”of the car allowing the
implementation of future“cortex”high level functionalities
