Figure 3.15 The Global Generic Drugs Market Drivers & Restraints, 2017-2028
We have defined some of the market drivers for growth in the global generic drugs market over the
forecast period. This list is not exhaustive as they will be examined closer into depth within the report
for each given region or country. Some of the factors identified include:
• Cost-pressures of branded drugs which encourages healthcare providers and governments
to introduce policies to encourage generic drugs use.
• Demographic trends: population growth, an increasing proportion of elderly people in most
countries, and the rapid emergence of the middle-class in many emerging markets will drive
demand for generic medicines.
• Expansion of healthcare provision in the US via the Affordable Care Act, China, India, Russia
and other major markets which increases the market for branded and generic drugs.
• Increased focus on higher-value generics, or the aforementioned ‘complex’ or differentiated
generics, as well as biosimilar drugs which still remain cheaper.
• Loss of patent protection of a number of major originator drugs.

In 2017 the Italian generic drugs market was worth $3.9bn which we estimated to grow to $4.2bn in
2018 (Table 5.5). With the current low level of generic penetration in the country, we anticipate further
government regulations geared towards generic substitution to stimulate an increase in generic
penetration rates during the forecast period. Cost pressures and the residual effects of austerity in
the Eurozone will contribute to the development of this market. This combined with off-patent drugs
in the coming years bring prospect for the development of Italy’s young generic drug market.
We forecasted the generic drugs in the Italian market to grow from $3.9bn in 2017 to reach $6.7bn
in 2022 with a CAGR of 11.6% (Table 5.5 and Figure 5.5). We expect the political and regulatory
