Director’s Notes:
New Hours, New Services
This is turning out to be a big year for Westlake
Porter Public Library. It is perhaps fitting that some of
our biggest changes in a long time come in the year of
the tenth anniversary of our building. Since 1884 the
library has been housed in four different buildings, and
on July 23 we celebrated a decade in our current
edifice.
A significant change this year is to the library’s
hours of operation. Beginning on August 5 we will be
open every Sunday in August. Traditionally we have
been closed on Sundays in the summer, but this year
we will be opening a month sooner. The Board of
Trustees approved this change at their June meeting
with an eye toward being open on Sundays throughout
the summer in 2013. In addition, Friday and Saturday
hours have been extended an extra hour to 6 p.m
starting on Friday, August 10.
In May we rolled out a new service by joining
SearchOhio and OhioLink. SearchOhio and OhioLink are
resource sharing consortiums that allow us to get you
materials from public and academic libraries around
Ohio much easier and faster. If you search our catalog
and can’t find what you need, a link is provided to
these new resources. Our staff is also available to help
you try out this new service.
LibALERTS is another very cool innovation. Through
this service you can be notified when we order the
latest release from your favorite author, allowing you
to place a hold right away.
I’m happy to report that on this ten-year anniver-
sary of our current building and our 128th year of
continuous service that Westlake Porter Public Library
continues to fulfill the vision of Leonard G. Porter. I
hope you’ll enjoy the additional hours and
terrific new services!

Plain Dealer Artist Chris Morris
Shares His Talents at WPPL
Cleveland Plain Dealer Art
Director Chris Morris will exhibit his
drawings of Rock and Roll Hall of
Fame inductees at the library and
present a program in September.
His exhibition and program are
co-sponsored by The Westlake
Westshore Arts Council.
The exhibition will take place in
September. The drawings were
originally created for an April 13
Plain Dealer Friday Magazine
feature celebrating the 2012 induc-
tion ceremony held here in
Cleveland. Morris created carica-
tures of all 541 inductees (including
the 2012 class). The caricatures
were grouped together for the
magazine’s cover, then pictured
separately across 27 pages. If
you’re a fan of rock’n’roll you
won’t want to miss this
opportunity!
Chris will also appear at the
library on Tuesday, September 18
from 7-7:45 p.m. He’ll share some
of the illustrations he’s done
throughout his career as well as
some of the stories behind them.
Chris has been the Plain
Dealer’s art director since last
August. Prior to that he was art
director at the Las Vegas Sun. In his
20 years in the news illustration
business, Chris has worked at the
Dallas Times Herald, the Dallas
Morning News and the San
Francisco Examiner. He also has
plenty of freelance experience,
contributing to ESPN.com, the
Washington Post, the New York
Times and the Hollywood Reporter
among others.2

Meet Former Cleveland
Brown Don Cockroft
at WPPL!
Board of Trustees member John
Weedon will be stepping down on
December 31, 2012, creating an
opening for interested and quali-
fied candidates. Weedon has been
a member of the Board for 13 years
and is the current Board President.
The Board, the policy-making
body of the library, is composed of
seven members. The Library
Board’s primary responsibilities are
approving library policies, setting
the budget, hiring a director and
fiscal officer and advocating for
the library. Terms are seven years
with a maximum of two terms.
Trustees represent the commu-
nity at large and their varied
library interests. The only prerequi-
site for applicants is that they have
an interest in public library issues
and wish to become a public library
advocate.
Library board meetings are held
monthly, usually on a Wednesday,
at 6:30 pm. These meetings are
open to the public and agendas are
posted in the library in advance of
the meetings.
Those interested in applying for
a position as a trustee may get an
application from the library’s
Administration Department by

loading it from the library web site

New Library Board Member Sought
Don Cockroft, who most foot-
ball fans remember as the
punter/placekicker for the
Cleveland Browns during the
“Kardiac Kids” era, will visit WPPL
on Tuesday, September 25 at 6 p.m.
He will discuss and sign his book
The 1980 Kardiac Kids - Our Untold
Stories.
Don was the Browns’ punter for
nine seasons and placekicker for all
13 seasons of his NFL career with
the team. He was one of the last
double-duty kickers in the NFL and
the Browns’ second all-time leading
scorer for 34 years, surpassed only
last season by kicker Phil Dawson.
Don’s final NFL season - 1980 - was
the year the Browns were dubbed
the “Kardiac Kids” because of their
predilection for heart-stopping last-
minute wins. He retired in 1981
with 1080 points scored, at the
time the eighth highest in the NFL.
Don was inducted into the
Cleveland Sports Hall of Fame in
2002 and the Cleveland Browns
Legends in 2007.
Inspired by memories of the
heady 1980 season, Don released
The 1980 Kardiac Kids - Our Untold
Stories in October, 2011. A 672-
page coffee-table book, it recounts
the 1980 season, complete with
photos, game recaps (including the
January, 1981 playoff game against
the Oakland Raiders which ended
with the infamous “Red Right
88.”), fan memories and personal
stories from players and coaches.
Don will sign books from 6-6:45
p.m. as well as after his talk,
which will begin at 7 p.m.

If your child needs help with
homework that you just can’t pro-
vide, then come to the library’s
Homework Help Center (H2C)!
The H2C is a drop-in center
where students can get homework
help from other students, access a
selection of the Westlake City
Schools’ textbooks, and use laptop
computers to do research and work
with Microsoft Office software.
The H2C will open on Sunday,
September 30, in the library’s
Storytime Room (in the Youth
Services Department). It will be
open from 6:30 - 8 p.m. on
Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays,
and from 2-3:30 p.m. on Sundays,
when Westlake City Schools are in
session.
“Reading Buddies” will return
with the H2C. “Reading Buddies” is
an informal program aimed at
improving literacy skills for children
in grades K and up by making
reading a fun and exciting experi-
ence. Kids can meet with a teen
buddy for 20 minutes when the H2C
is open. Bring your own book or
we’ll supply one.
The Homework Help Center
was created in 2004 with the help
of several donors.

with a GPA of 3.2 or higher and would
like to help other kids with their
homework, then consider
volunteering at the library’s
Homework Help Center (H2C).
This is an excellent project for
college applications and service
project credit. H2C hours are
Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays
from 6:30-8 p.m. and Sundays from
2-3:30 p.m. (when Westlake schools
are in session), beginning on
September 30. There will be a
mandatory orientation session on
Thursday, September 27 at 6:30 p.m.

accepting 40 volunteers this year!
Homework Help and Reading Buddies Return!

Westlake Porter Public Library’s
second annual Science Week will
take place August 6-11. Sponsored
by the Friends of Porter Public
Library, Science Week is intended
to emphasize the importance of
science and technology in today’s
economy while encouraging people
of all ages to expand their knowl-
edge of scientific concepts and
ideas. Programs planned cover
some of the S.T.E.M. (Science,
Technology, Engineering and Math)
objectives included in the Westlake
City Schools’ curriculum.
Here are the programs we’ve
planned:
Now you can get holds placed
on new books by your favorite
authors sooner. The library has
introduced a service called
LibALERTS that notifies library
users when the library has ordered
a new book by their favorite
author(s).
Register for LibALERTS at
www.westlakelibrary.org/libalerts/
and select the author(s) you wish
to receive notifications about.
Notifications will be sent to your
e-mail account or cell phone, and
contain links you can follow to the
catalog to place holds.
(Unfortunately, the system does not
automatically place a hold on the
title.) There is a mobile version of
the service which allows users to
access it via their cell phones.
LibALERTS grew out of library
users’ requests for a way to find
out when their favorite authors
release new books. Rather than
look for a vendor to provide such a
service, Web Librarian Matt Weaver
developed LibALERTS himself using
Drupal, the open source software
the library’s other sites are built
on, augmented with some custom
code. While developing the pro-
gram, he decided to go one better
by setting it up to notify patrons
when we order new books so that
they may get holds placed sooner.
Anyone who opts to receive
alerts on their cell phone via text
message should be aware that mes-
sage and data rates for your cellu-
lar carrier apply. Due to restrictions
from the library’s carrier for text
messages, LibALERTS users can
receive a maximum of five alerts
per month via text message, so
voracious readers should consider
receiving their notifications via
e-mail.
Authors included in the services
represent a variety of genres, both
fiction and non-fiction, and include
popular, best-selling luminaries like
John Grisham, Nora Roberts,
Stephen King, and Janet Evanovich.
LibALERTS also includes young adult
and childrens authors. If users
don’t find a particular author, they
can submit it to the site and a staff
member will attach a subscription
to the user’s account.

Axelrod on Saturday, September 8
at 7 p.m at the Westlake
Performing Arts Center. Jim will
talk about his book In the Long
Run. Copies will be available for
purchase and signing.
In the Long Run is the story of
Jim’s quest to run the 2009 New
York Marathon and beat his late
father’s finish times doing it. With
his personal and professional lives
at a crossroads, his effort
becomes about more than a
marathon and running - it ulti-
mately is about confronting
change, life lessons the dead can
still teach us, and finding happi-
ness.
Jim is a national correspon-
dent for CBS News,
appearing on CBS Evening News
with Scott Pelley and other CBS
News broadcasts. He served as
Chief White House Correspondent
from 2006 to 2009, and has cov-
ered a broad range of stories,
including the war in Iraq, the U.S.
invasion of Afghanistan, the 2004
and 2008 presidential elections,
the Balkans War and the after-
math of the 2000 presidential
election.
Jim was one of the CBS News
correspondents who received a
2002 Emmy Award for coverage of
the Washington, D.C. sniper siege.
Prior to joining CBS News’ New
York bureau Jim worked in the
Dallas and Miami bureaus. He has
also held various positions at local
news stations around the country.
