RECOVERY PLANPROPOSAL FOR NEW ADDICTION REHABILITATION CENTRE ON FARM MOVING FORWARD QUICKLY TO COUNCIL
By ELAINE COONEY
Developers of Gouburn Valley
Addiction Recovery Centre lodged
planning permission for the new
centre with the Greater Shepparton
City Council on Friday.
Neatline Homes owners Helma
and Ken Gash and architect Ian
Field have been working towards
the establishment of a drug rehabili-
tation centre in the district for the
past 18 months and bought land in
Mooroopna last week.
The trio bought a 100-acre farm
near the cemetery on the Echuca Rd
just north of Cornish Rd for their
30-bed facility, which will include
18 self-contained units for addicts
to live in towards the final stages of
their recovery.
Architect Ian Field said the plan-
ning process could take up to three
months and if the estimated $7 mil-
lion building process was funded in
the Victorian State budget in May,
work could begin right away. He
was hopeful the facility would be
running by December next year.
Member for Shepparton Suzanna
Sheed said she had not yet seen the
business case, but welcomed any
facility to treat addiction.
The facility will be operated by
ACSO and Odyssey House and resi-
dents will work the farm while
recovering from addiction.
ACSO’s chief executive Karenza
Louis-Smith said she had been in
discussions with the Victorian Gov-
ernment about the funding model
and the idea of social impact invest-
ing, with government backing, was
proving popular.
