Three violent incidents over the weekend kept police busy and led to injuries. An officer had his finger severed when attempting an arrest, another was headbutted, and a Mooroopna man suffered bleeding in the brain from an unprovoked punch. A woman also died in a separate car crash during a weekend of road trauma and violence dealt with by district police.

COPS ATTACKEDMAN ASSAULTED IN ANOTHER INCIDENT AND WOMAN KILLED IN CRASH DURING BUSY WEEKEND FOR POLICE
By ELAINE COONEY
District police faced a weekend of
violence and road trauma, following
the assault of two police officers and
a Mooroopna man and three car
crashes, one that resulted in the
death of an elderly woman.
Shepparton police Sergeant Dar-
ren Wagstaff said two officers were
in hospital yesterday and a Moor-
oopna man suffered bleeding to the
brain due to violent attacks in
Shepparton at the weekend.
Sgt Wagstaff said at 4 pm on Sat-
urday police attempted to arrest a
man, 30, on King Richard Dve in
Shepparton for an assault he alleg-
edly carried out on a man last
month.
He said the man was around the
side of the house when police
attempted the arrest him.
Sgt Wagstaff said the man grew
violent and resisted arrest before
capsicum spray was used.
He said the man ran inside his
home, slamming the door on the
officer’s finger.
He said the top of the officer’s
finger was severed and he was hav-
ing treatment at Goulburn Valley
Health.
The man was arrested and will
face Shepparton Magistrates’ Court
next month.
Sgt Wagstaff said another officer
was headbutted when he went to
speak to an Epping man, 23, who
was alcohol and drug-affected on
Maude St Mall at 11.55 pm on Sat-
urday.
Sgt Wagstaff said the officer suf-
fered a facial injury and was having
scans in hospital.
He will face Shepparton Magis-
trates’ Court in January.
He said on Friday night a Moor-
oopna man, 46, intervened when a
Shepparton man, 19, was verbally
abusing his girlfriend outside Mus-
tafa’s Kebabs on Vaughan St.
Sgt Wagstaff said the young man
‘‘coward punched’’ (punched with-
out any warning) the Mooroopna
man to the head.
Sgt Wagstaff alleged that from
looking at CCTV, the man appeared
to be unconscious before he hit the
ground.
He said the Shepparton man was
originally charged with recklessly
causing injury, but after the victim
was transferred to The Alfred hos-
pital, where scans revealed he had a
fractured skull and bleeding to the
brain, the charge was upscaled to
recklessly causing serious injury due
to the new one-punch hit rules.
The accused will face court in
January.
Sgt Wagstaff said the victim was
in a serious, but not life-threatening
condition.
