Gary Anderson was the first New Zealand cyclist to win an Olympic medal, taking bronze in the 4000m individual pursuit at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. He won New Zealand's first Olympic cycling medal since Bruce Biddle narrowly missed a medal in 1972. While Anderson's time would have won gold in 1988, he earned bronze in 1992 as the gold went to Briton Chris Boardman on a revolutionary aerodynamic bike. Gary Anderson has won a total of three gold medals, three silver medals, and two bronze medals in his cycling career.
