Chikunguniya fever is a re-emerging disease
characterized by acute fever with severe
arthralgia.
Name is derive from south african language
which means "that which bends up or gets
folded.“
This virus was first isolated from human
patients in Tanzania in 1952.

5. Clinical Manifestation
Incubation Peroid is of 3-5 days.
Most common symptoms are fever and severe joint pain ( due arthritis).
Arthritis is polyarticular, migratory and edematous (joint swelling),
affecting the small joints of wrists and ankles.
Other symptoms include headache, muscle pain, skin rashes.
Most patients recover within a week, except for the joint pain (lasts for
months).

6. Laboratory Diagnosis
Detection of IgM or IgG in a paired serum sample by
ELISA is the mainstay of diagnosis.
Reverse transcriptase PCR can be used to detect viral
RNA.
