1. Youth briefing with Mr. Emmanuel Dumisani Dlamini, Chair of the
Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice

11 June 2014, Bonn, Germany. Youth leaders from around the world participated in a
youth briefing with Mr. Emmanuel Dumisani Dlamini, Chair of the Subsidiary Body
for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA) on margins of the Bonn Climate
Change Conference.
Mr. Dumisani Dlamini provided an overview of the negotiations on such agenda
items as the Nairobi work programme on impacts, vulnerability and adaptation to
climate change; issues relating to agriculture; and REDD+. Mr. Dumisani Dlamini
mentioned that issues relating to gender and indigenous peoples are being discussed
under the SBSTA. He highlighted that negotiations are advancing and Parties are
working hard to adopt a number of decisions in Peru.
Mr. Dumisani Dlamini stressed that the involvement of young people in science is
crucial for addressing climate change. He highlighted that education is fundamental to
devising long term solutions. Therefore, he invited young people to disseminate
climate change information and to educate their families and communities on the
urgency of climate action.
Mr. Emmanuel Dumisani Dlamini invited youth delegates to follow the SBSTA
negotiations and provide concrete inputs to agenda items under consideration.
About the Youth Briefings
The Youth Briefings are part of the activities organized by the UNFCCC secretariat to
enhance meaningful participation of youth in the intergovernmental climate change
process. The briefings provide an opportunity for youth delegates to get direct access
to high-level delegates and chairs of subsidiary bodies to discuss pertinent climate
change issues.
