With urgent programs on women, peace, and security being launched from October to
January of this year, including the Justice for Salwa is Justice for All campaign (which
demands justice for assassinations and attacks against women human rights defenders,
and asks for better protection and security for women to participate at all levels of
advocacy), the 59th session is a crucial moment in the international women's movement
and a critical opportunity for leaders from the Arab region to lend their voices in
reviewing the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action twenty years after its adoption
and look at the way forward in achieving goals on gender equality, human rights, and
peace. In previous years, Karama successfully garnered media attention and political
engagement to build awareness of the priorities for women in the Arab region and share
experiences and insights from the work women's rights leaders were doing on the ground.
Karama has hosted delegations representing 13 countries, putting women's rights leaders
and activists face-to-face with US congress members, the Deputy National Security
Adviser for Strategic Communication to President Obama -Ben Rhodes-, academic
leaders such as Isobel Coleman of the Council for Foreign Relations and Jane Harman -
Director, President and CEO of the Wilson Center-, Special Rapporteurs on Violence
against Women, Human Rights Officers from the OHCHR, as well as members of the
Security Council. Karama's delegations have also hosted panels convening governments,
international activists, and UN representatives and sharing strategic research and
recommendations on topics ranging from women's political participation to challenges to
women's security following the Arab uprisings. Recently, in parallel with this work,
Karama and its partners launched the Arab Regional Network on Women, Peace, and
Security. This network is an outcome of a strategic training on women, peace, and
security held in cooperation with the European Union and the League of Arab States.
Since then, the network has continued to build momentum at the regional-level, issuing a
ten-point manifesto calling on the international community for support on ten main issue
areas, and at the national-level, working to develop national action plans on UN SCR
1325.

The debate will be dealing with the impact of climate change in developing countries,
with a stress on local communities facing shortages in their access to natural resources,
with a particular gender perspective. Highly dependent on natural resources to support
their families, women seem to have a limited range of options to choose and adapt to
climate change. Working on women's access to human rights and integrating them to
decision-making processes, we believe that women can become agents of change and
improve the resilience of their communities to climate change by their actions.

improved the lives of families left behind and have contributed to national and local
development in countries of origin. However, there is a need to highlight the challenges

Achieving Beijing: role of social norms for gender equality
11 March, 1:15 PM-2:30 PM
Conference Room 7 - GA Building (max. capacity: 114)
Contact: dev.gender[at]oecd.org
A growing body of evidence is proving the importance of including social norms into
development interventions in order to accelerate progress on gender equality.
Discriminatory social norms significantly limit women's access to empowerment
opportunities, infringe their human rights and put a brake on development processes.
These require a multi-pronged approach that takes into account the embedded
discrimination against women in laws, practices and attitudes. Speakers will present new
results from the Social Institutions and Gender Index (SIGI), and make the case for how
social norms can be integrated into development policy and development operations in
order to accelerate progress towards the Beijing agenda as well as the post 2015
framework.

Through the adoption of specially designed work ¿ life balance policies, institutions and
organizations can help attract and retain talent, improve job satisfaction, and promote
employees¿ well-being, all of which are important prerequisites for better
competitiveness, business growth and sustainable development. Lower employment rates
for women as compared to men is often a consequence of the higher involvement of
women in family life and the raising of children which creates greater difficulties for
women to combine family and professional life and to pursue a career. The event is an
opportunity to demonstrate, through national experience, that good governance and
understanding of the local environment and a broad cooperation network can make a
difference in both professional and private life by improving productivity and well-being.
It will also help understand how professional¿private life reconciliation policies are
fundamental for achieving gender equality and address two of the key challenges in
contemporary societies: the promotion of women¿s participation in employment and the
involvement of men in family life.

As part of the observance of the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of
Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade. This exhibition pays tribute to the many
enslaved women who endured unbearable hardships, including sexual exploitation, as
well as those who fought for freedom from slavery and advocated for its abolition. It also
celebrates the strength of enslaved women, many of whom successfully transmitted their
African culture to their descendants despite the many abuses they endured. It is no
surprise that their fight for freedom from slavery also influenced the fight for women's
rights that started in the 19th century.

Women and poverty, identified 20 years ago as a critical area of concern in the Beijing
Platform for Action, continues to be one of the biggest challenges facing development
efforts of governments all over the world. With respect to this area, the Philippines and
Uruguay face similar challenges as countries from the South. As such, these countries
have come up with their respective responses to women and poverty. This session will
bring to fore those responses, their innovativeness and divergence from traditional anti-
poverty measures, their effectiveness in directly addressing the gender dimension of
poverty, the continuing challenges in their implementation, and the lessons that need to
be carried on as we forge a new development agenda beyond 2015.

Women¿s voices ¿ whether individual or collective ¿ have proven to be fundamental to
advance women¿s rights at national and international levels. Online communities and
social media have become essential for women¿s rights groups to push for greater
accountability and action on gender equality. In particular, grassroots women¿s
networks have resulted in changes in laws and norms as seen in the last few years in
India, Kenya and Niger. However, women¿s voices from civil society are still absent from
decision-making processes, despite the fact that it is precisely those decisions that affect
them. This event will explore how new media can broaden the scope for action on
women¿s rights and gender equality within a post- 2015 agenda.

In 2014, the World Health Organisation reported that 35% of women worldwide will
experience intimate partner violence or non-partner sexual violence in their lifetime. But
the WHO also reported that the preventable nature of violence against women is ¿not an
article of faith, but a statement based on evidence¿.
How can we stop violence against women from happening in the first place? What is
needed at the individual, community and government levels to challenge existing social
norms? This side event will bring together Government and NGO leaders to discuss
recent progress and challenges in promoting gender equality and ending violence against
women through effecting change at the individual, community and government levels.

Currently the world only measures the poverty of households, not individuals, with
poverty measures mainly focused on money; however, there are other factors that also
matter to poor women and men. This side event will introduce The Individual Deprivation
Measure (IDM), which is the first poverty measurement tool in the world to enable
accurate
sex-disaggregation of data, based on the views of poor women and men.
The panel will outline the methodology of the IDM and discuss how Governments and
policy makers can use the tool to better understand the differences in how women and
men experience poverty, so as to address poverty more effectively.

The side event aims: To share Malawi's experience of the Social Cash Transfer as a tool
for women's empowerment and to demonstrate the significance of linkages between
Social Cash Transfers and other social and productive services. The event will showcase
a short film highlighting the impact the programme has made in the lives of rural women
and children as well as testimony from beneficiaries. It will also involve a panel
discussion with experts on various aspects of the programme. All are welcome to attend

The 10th anniversary of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 in October 2010
highlighted the increasing demand for accountability to the Women, Peace and Security
(WPS) agenda of the UN Security Council. As we are preparing for the 15th anniversary,
IAW expresses its concern about the fact that only 48 Member States out of 192 have
adopted national action plans. Women are still underrepresented if not totally absent in
most official peace negotiations and sexual violence in conflict is increasing in number
and brutality. The side event will explore the opportunities of monitoring the
implementation of UNSC Res. 1325 and following resolutions through reporting
requirements under CEDAW. This also includes Res. 1820 linking sexual violence as a
tactic of war with the maintenance of international peace and security.

Discriminatory social norms significantly limit women's access to empowerment opportunities, infringe their human rights and put a brake on development processes. These require a multi-pronged approach that takes into account the embedded discrimination against women in laws, practices and attitudes. Speakers will present new results from the Social Institutions and Gender Index (SIGI), and make the case for how social norms can be integrated into development policy and development operations in order to accelerate progress towards the Beijing agenda as well as the post 2015 framework.  Israel Education - the power behind empowering women 11 March, 1:15 PM-2:30 PM Conference Room 8 - GA Building (max. capacity: 96) Contact: AlexanderBVF[at]newyork.mfa.gov.il  Thailand Beyond Beijing +20 11 March, 1:15 PM-2:30 PM DHL Auditorium - Dag Hammarskjöld Library (max. capacity: 160) invitation flyer Contact: daisy.thaimission[at]gmail.com

  • 36. 12 March, 3:00 PM-4:15 PM DHL Auditorium - Dag Hammarskjöld Library (max. capacity: 160) Concept Note and Programme Contact: sec.italyun[at]esteri.it Through the adoption of specially designed work ¿ life balance policies, institutions and organizations can help attract and retain talent, improve job satisfaction, and promote employees¿ well-being, all of which are important prerequisites for better competitiveness, business growth and sustainable development. Lower employment rates for women as compared to men is often a consequence of the higher involvement of women in family life and the raising of children which creates greater difficulties for women to combine family and professional life and to pursue a career. The event is an opportunity to demonstrate, through national experience, that good governance and understanding of the local environment and a broad cooperation network can make a difference in both professional and private life by improving productivity and well-being. It will also help understand how professional¿private life reconciliation policies are fundamental for achieving gender equality and address two of the key challenges in contemporary societies: the promotion of women¿s participation in employment and the involvement of men in family life.  Republic of Korea, Women's Human Rights Commission of Korea Sexual Violence During Wartime: Accountability, Achievements and Challenges 12 March, 3:00 PM-4:15 PM Conference Room E - GA Building (max. capacity: 52) Contact: jyoon715[at]gmail.com  Zambia Zambia UN Mission, the International Telecommunication Union, the Global Alliance for Women's Health and the Virginia Lee Cook Foundation. This session will bring to fore those responses, their innovativeness and divergence from traditional anti- poverty measures, their effectiveness in directly addressing the gender dimension of poverty, the continuing challenges in their implementation, and the lessons that need to be carried on as we forge a new development agenda beyond 2015.  New Zealand PIFS Event 16 March, 1:15 PM-2:30 PM Conference Room 7 - GA Building (max. capacity: 114)  Denmark, The Ministry of Children, Gender Equality, Integration and Social Affairs of Denmark Gender equality as a crucial economic parameter 16 March, 1:15 PM-2:30 PM DHL Auditorium - Dag Hammarskjöld Library (max. capacity: 160) Event Flyer Contact: sewi[at]sm.dk  Development Buisness, Department of Public Information, Commonwealth Business Network Women in Procurement 16 March, 3:00 PM-4:15 PM DHL Auditorium - Dag Hammarskjöld Library (max. capacity: 160) Flyer Contact: arif.zaman[at]cwbusinesswomen.org  Jordan, Jordanian National Commission for Women Women and Armed Conflict: A Regional Perspective

Online communities and social media have become essential for women¿s rights groups to push for greater accountability and action on gender equality. In particular, grassroots women¿s networks have resulted in changes in laws and norms as seen in the last few years in India, Kenya and Niger. However, women¿s voices from civil society are still absent from decision-making processes, despite the fact that it is precisely those decisions that affect them.
