Editor's Notes

  1. At the Steamboat Institute Summit on Foreign Policy in Colorado, concerns were brought up whether or not Barack Obama’s “appeasing” strategies would prove useful against such an aggressive leadership style of Vladimir Putin. The concerns were that if Putin were to take over these Baltic countries again, there’s a chance NATO would not take action. If this were to be the case, NATO would disband completely, which “is exactly what Putin wants” (Townhall.com) Putin has not shown any sign of submission, represented by his intercepting of US Air Force spy planes. Furthermore, although the Ribbentrop Pact ended, “present-day Putin Russia has rapidly evolved in the direction of the former Soviet imperial worldview” (Eurasiareview) If that’s not enough, there is a constant debate Estonia has with the European Union over accepting Syrian refugees. Estonians’ concern is that a large amount of foreign immigration could ruin the Estonian culture, language, and identity of the small nation. This proposal by the EU is strongly opposed by Estonia because of residual damage leftover from Russia’s rule over them in World War 2. Estonia is in dire need of help, because they are at risk internally for loss of culture, and externally by neighboring military force. 2. Data from Google Trends can been seen by following this link: https://www.google.com/trends/explore#q=Estonia I am also wondering if the hits for February this year has reached 33 so quickly due to our groups doing research on the topic for this PPT project. When searching Estonia 2004 in google to see why the trends hit a high I came back with this web search: http://estonia.eu/about-estonia/country/estonia-at-a-glance.html Estonia became a NATO member state on 29 March 2004. Estonia became a European Union member state on 1 May 2004. https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=Estonia+2004 The Estonian Final was held on February 7 at the ETV Studios in Tallinn hosted by Marko Reikop and Karmel Eikner. The winner was chosen by televoting and SMS voting. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Parliament_election,_2004_(Estonia) The European Parliament election of 2004 in Estonia was the election of MEP representing Estonia constituency for the 2004-2009 term of the European Parliament. It was part of the wider 2004 European election. The vote took place on June 13.
  3. We searched Estonia using a hashtag, Estonia and Russia. It says that on February 2nd was the day in 1920 that the Soviet, Russia and Estonia signed the treaty of Tartu that was the ending of the Estonian war independence. That was the main trend when we searched Estonia on Twitter. Estonia celebrates that liberation. https://twitter.com/MoscowTimes/status/694406671196508160 https://twitter.com/DKAMBinEstonia/status/694586477871828992

The country has refused to be part of the UN Refugee Agency's displacement programs and taken a firm stand against any solidarity mechanisms within the EU, according to NGO Estonian Refugee Council. Only a few dozen people a year are granted asylum in Estonia.” -Rallies against states seizing children: Google search: https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=estonia%20rallies%20against%20seizing%20children Article: http://www.watsupeurope.com/news/estonia-parents-rally-against-states-seizure-of-foreign-children-across-europe/ “Estonia: Parents rally against states’ seizure of foreign children across Europe Dozens of people gathered near the Estonian Parliament in Tallinn to protest against Europe-wide services such as the Norwegian “Child Welfare Service” (Barnevernet), which they say often take children away from their foreign-national parents for little obvious reason, Saturday. The protesters demanded the government of Estonia and ambassador of Norway stop the seizure of children from their families throughout Europe. The rally was called by the organization ‘Parents of Estonia’ which protects parents’ rights and supports children’s need to grow up with their families.” Estonia Tank Missile google search results: https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=estonia+tank+missile Article: http://news.postimees.ee/3480865/estonian-defense-forces-carry-out-first-live-fire-exercise-with-javelin-anti-tank-missiles “The Estonian defense forces on Friday carried out the first live fire exercise with the Javelin anti-tank guided missile system. The exercise took place at the defense forces' central training ground and the missiles were fired by a member of the anti-tank platoon of the Viru Infantry Battalion and a member of the volunteer corps Kaitseliit (Defense League). One missile was fired at each of the two targets, one of them at a distance of 500 meters and the other 1,400 meters. Both shots hit the targets.” Estonia Ghost town google search: https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=estonia+tallinn+sea+fortress+ghost+town Article link: http://deepbaltic.com/2016/02/01/a-ghost-town-unsuitable-for-humans-what-now-for-patarei-sea-fortress/ “Until 1918 Patarei served as a military barracks, and after Estonia gained its freedom, the republic’s army took control of the building. Even then it was in a sorry state, affected by damp and mould and “unsuitable for humans”. It was used to store army provisions. In 1920 the government made the decision to turn it into a detention house and then a prison. Tallinn had been without one since the end of WWI and the Russian revolution of 1917 when the previous two prisons had been burnt down. From then on it was used as a prison until 2005. The guidebook, written by museum manager Andrus Villem who has been involved with the fortress museum for more than ten years, says that during this period: “All the major historic events of 20th-century Europe, all the diverse turbulent changes of that century, also washed over Patarei.”
