GAME INFORMATIONDETROIT LIONS
A TRIBUTE TO MR. FORD
William Clay Ford
(1925-2014)
Detroit Lions
Owner and Chairman, 1964-2014
Beginning Week 1 this season, the Detroit Lions introduced a special jersey patch displaying the letters “WCF” in
honor of the franchise’s late owner, Mr. William Clay Ford. The patch will appear on the le shoulder of all Lions players’
jerseys for the 2014 season as a tribute to one of the NFL’s original statesmen.
Mr. Ford passed away on March 9 at the age of 88 and owned and directed the Lions franchise during a span of 50
years. Through five decades, his unwavering leadership provided stability to an organization, its fans and the community
when most professional sports franchises cycled through numerous ownership changes and franchise moves. Mr. Ford
remained steadfastly committed to ensuring the Lions were always a vital component to the Detroit community and the
state of Michigan.
THE NFL REMEMBERS MR. FORD
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell: “For five decades, Mr. Ford’s passion for the Lions, Detroit, and the NFL was the
foundation of one of the NFL’s historic franchises. As an NFL owner, Mr. Ford helped bring the NFL through enormous
periods of change and growth, always guided by his commitment to what was best for the NFL and his beloved Lions. All
of us in the NFL extend our heartfelt sympathy to Mr. Ford’s wife Martha, Bill Ford, Jr. and the entire Ford family.”
Dallas Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones: “I‘ve literally been at owners (meetings) when an owner came up and met Mr.
Ford for the first time, and the owner was a new owner in the NFL. I was standing right with him and the owner talked
about how his granddad had been a Ford dealer in Texas, in the depths of Texas, and he literally teared up when he
talked about what Ford, what the brand and what the individuals stood for and had stood for in his evolving to the point
that he could buy an NFL football team. He actually teared up and showed that kind of emotion, and that was (former
Minnesota Vikings owner) Red McCombs.”
Late Buffalo Bills Owner Ralph Wilson, Jr: “I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Bill Ford. He was a
man of great integrity who loved his family and his Lions. Bill was well respected within our league as well as the city
of Detroit and his contributions to both were numerous. We have all lost a good friend with his passing. My deepest
sympathies and condolences go out to his family and many friends.”
Lions Hall of Fame TE and Assistant Director of Pro Personnel Charlie Sanders: “I’ve always just enjoyed
being around him just to watch him laugh. He was a cheerful owner, you know, upbeat, always positive. I have a lot of
memories, but when I think of him I just think of a man that was very fair and enjoyed people and enjoyed people that
had the same desires that he had. Most of those are centered around the Detroit Lions organization.”
Former Lions WR Herman Moore: “Every single game that he was in the locker room, we at least spoke, or he
would be in the locker room. I appreciated that from our owner. That’s a real moment that fans don’t know about — the
commitment that he would show to us players.”
GAME INFORMATIONDETROIT LIONS
As the Lions’ new head coach, Jim Caldwell brings 37
years of coaching experience to Detroit, including 13
previous years in the NFL and 24 years on the college
level. Two Super Bowl titles and three appearances in the
NFL’s championship game highlight his coaching resume,
which includes leading the Indianapolis Colts to an AFC
Championship and a berth in Super Bowl XLVI as head coach
following the 2009 season.
COACHING OVERVIEW
Hired as head coach for the Detroit Lions January 14,
2014.
Coached in three Super Bowls with Indianapolis (XLI and
XLIV) and Baltimore (XLVII) and won two Super Bowl
titles (Indianapolis and Baltimore).
Infirstyear as head coachfor Indianapolis(2009),hewon
the AFC Championship and led the franchise to Super
Bowl XLIV. He became the first NFL coach to win his first
14 games and the fi h rookie head coach to reach the
Super Bowl.
One of four head coaches to produce 24+ regular-season
wins and a Super Bowl berth in their first two career
seasons as head coach.
Holds a 26-22 (.542) regular-season record in three
previous seasons as an NFL head coach, including two
seasons with at least 10 wins.
Led the Colts to two consecutive AFC South division
titles in 2009 and 2010.
In eight of the 10 seasons Caldwell coached in
Indianapolis, the Colts ranked in the Top-10 in total
offense eight times and six times in the Top-5.
From 2003-09, Caldwell was the Colts quarterbacks
coach and was also promoted to assistant head coach
and associate head coach during that time. He worked
closely with QB Peyton Manning and the team’s
quarterbacks. During that span, Indianapolis set NFL
records with seven consecutive seasons finishing with
11+ wins (6, Dallas 1976-81) and 12+ victories (4, Dallas,
1992-95).
Two of his quarterbacks, Manning (Super Bowl XLI) and
Ravens QB Joe Flacco (Super Bowl XLVII) were named
Super Bowl MVPs following their teams’ respective
championship runs.
Led the Ravens offense to a 5-2 record a er taking over
as offensive coordinator late in the 2012 season as the
team averaged 400.6 yards per game during that span.
ASSEMBLING HIS TEAM
In his first season in Detroit, Caldwell wasted no time put-
ting together his coaching staff. Headlining that search were
the additions of defensive coordinator Teryl Austin and of-
fensive coordinator Joe Lombardi, each of whom have won
a Super Bowl with Baltimore and New Orleans, respectively.
Combined, six of the 10 new Lions assistant coaches have
won a Super Bowl championship.

WHAT THEY ARE SAYING ABOUT JIM CALDWELL
Former Indianapolis Colts Head Coach Tony Dungy: “I
told Martin (Mayhew) that Jim Caldwell is exactly what
you’re looking for. He’ll lead by making people accountable
and by being a role model on and off the field. And with his
attention to detail and history of developing quarterbacks,
(Matthew) Stafford is going to flourish just like Peyton
Manning did with us in Indianapolis.”
Baltimore Ravens General Manager Ozzie Newsome: “I
believe it would be difficult to find anyone with the Ravens
who is more respected than Jim Caldwell. That includes
players, coaches and other staff members. He earned that
because of the person he is and his extensive knowledge
about football, including the keys to winning and his ability
to teach all of that. Personally, it is a privilege to know him,
and it was an honor to work with him.”

LIONS CLINCH PLAYOFF BERTH
With a 20-14 victory over the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field,
the Lions claimed their 11th win this season to improve to
11-4. It marks the first time the Lions have won 11 games
in the first 15 games of the season since attaining an 11-4
record in 1991.
By reaching 11-4, the Lions have tied the franchise mark
for most wins in the first 15 games in team history, which
includes the 1931 (14 games), 1934 (13 games), 1953 (12
games), 1962 (14 games) and 1970 (14 games) seasons. The
Lions have tallied an 11-4 record for the second time since
the NFL began playing a 16 game schedule in 1978.
With a win at Chicago, the Lions have reached 11 wins on
the season for the fourth time in franchise history and the
first since 1991.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR
GAME INFORMATIONDETROIT LIONS
DASH AND SMASH
The Detroit Lions’ running game has had a season full of
ups and downs, but with the team’s playoff fate sealed, the
ground attack seems to be clicking at the right time.
RB Reggie Bush returned to the starting lineup last week
against the Chicago Bears for the first time since Week
10, and wasted little time making his presence felt on the
field. The ninth-year back picked up a crucial first down on
the Lions’ third possession of the game, making a stellar
fingertip grab on a short pass and turning it up field for a
gain of 21. Bush then promptly burst to the outside on a
handoff on the following play for a 13-yard touchdown,
giving Detroit the early 7-0 getaway.
Lions Head Coach Jim Caldwell on Bush’s contribution
at Chicago: “Reggiedidanicejob.Reggiecertainlybroke
a couple plays for us, made a huge difference and was
able to score. I think he’s feeling a lot better and I think
you can see it.”
Bush’s solid day concluded with seven carries for 54 yards
and a touchdown, along with six receptions for 44 yards in
the passing game.
Not to be outdone, Bush’s stable-mate RB Joique Bell
put the Lions up for good late in the fourth quarter with a
bulldozing 17-yard run to help cement Detroit’s 20-14 win
over the Bears. Bell finished the day with 74 yards on the
ground and a touchdown, while adding a pair of receptions
for 13 yards.
Bush on the running game against Chicago: “We made
a point of emphasis to run the ball well. We knew that
in order for us to win, this time of the year we need to
be able to run the ball well. I think everybody on offense
took that to heart and really focused on being successful
today running the football. The offensive line did a great
job, receivers did a great job blocking and tight ends
did a great job. It really gave us a chance to really be
successful and go out and make plays.”
Bell has reached career highs in terms of carries (210) and
rushing yards (800), and has the full endorsement of his
head coach as the weather conditions worsen.
The Lions next head north to take on their NFC North rival
Green Bay Packers, for the division title and will need a good
helping of dash and smash to bring it home for the first time
since 1993. With Bell only seeming to get stronger as the
calendar nears January and Bush back to running the way
he’s capable of, Detroit’s backfield could just be getting
started when it matters most.
CaIdwell on how comfortable he is with Bell
shouldering a larger role: “I do think that he’s got a
body type that is certainly built for this kind of weather,
but good backs, that’s what they do. He’s tough, he’s
durable.”
IN SUH MOUNTABLE
Inagamewherethreeturnoversfromtheoffensecouldhave
led to a Bears surge in scoring last week at Chicago, the
Lions defense came through yet again and held the Bears
to just 14 points on the day. A huge part of that success
is because of the defensive line’s continued dominance this
season led by DT Ndamukong Suh.
In the Lions’ 20-14 win at Chicago, Suh registered 2 sacks,
giving him five career multi-sack games (1.5+) and his fourth
career 2+ sack game. By registering a multi-sack (1.5+)
game against the Bears, Suh became the fourth Lions
defensive tackle since 1982 to register five career multi-
sack games. He is now tied with Doug English and Shaun
Rogers for the most multi-sack games by a Lions defensive
tackle since 1982.
Caldwell on Suh’s performance: “As he always does,
he’s tough, he does a tremendous job, great effort and
performed well.”
The Lions’ front man has played tremendous this season
and was a huge part of the run defense success for Detroit.
Suh now has 8.5 sacks on the season, which is the most he’s
had since 2010. With two tackles for loss (TFL) at Chicago,
Suh has reached 20 TFLs in a season for the first time in
his career. He now has 2+ TFL’s in six different games this
season, the most games with 2+ TFLs in a season during his
career (4 in 2010 and 2012).
Lions Defensive Coordinator Teryl Austin last week
on why the run defense has ascended to such a high
level: “I think it’s the guys up front, obviously, they’re
the catalyst. The way we get off the ball, we’re very
physical.”
Suh and company will face Packers QB Aaron Rodgers in
Green Bay next week for the NFC North crown. In the two
teams’ previous meetings, the Lions defense outscored the
Packers offense 9-7 thanks to a fumble return touchdown by
S Don Carey and a safety from LB DeAndre Levy, and held
Rodgers to just 162 yards passing.
Suh on how excited he is about playing next week in
Green Bay: “I’m always excited playing against Aaron
Rodgers. I respect him, it’s a lot of fun going up there,
and I think we got a big game. Obviously, we have a big
game ahead of us just because they’re Green Bay and
they’re the next game, simple as that.”

In the Lions’ 20-14 win at Chicago, DT Ndamukong Suh
registered 2 sacks, giving him five career multi-sack games
(1.5+) and his fourth career 2+ sack game. By registering a

Byearningaplayoffberthin2014,HeadCoachJim Caldwell
became the third Lions head coach to lead the Lions to the
playoffs in his first season with the club, joining George
Wilson (1957) and Bobby Ross (1997) as the only coaches to
accomplish this feat in team history.
7
With a pick at Chicago (12/21), S Glover Quin is now leading
the NFL with seven interceptions. If he finishes (or ties) with
the most interceptions in the NFL, he will become the first
Lions player to lead the League in interceptions since Hall
of Fame CB Lem Barney (10) in 1967.
7
Detroit won for the seventh time at home this season with a
victory over Minnesota (12/14), which gives the Lions a 7-1
home record in 2014. A 7-1 home slate this year marks the
best home record for the Lions since 1995 (7-1).
10
With 11 tackles (eight solo) in Week 15 vs. Minnesota
(12/14), LB DeAndre Levy recorded his 10th game this
season with 10+ total tackles. He joined LB Chris Spielman
(13) as the only Lions defensive players to register 10+
tackles in at least 10 games since 1994.
11
With a 20-14 victory over the Chicago Bears at Soldier
Field (12/21), the Lions claimed their 11th win this season
to improve to 11-4. It marks the first time the Lions have
won 11 games in the first 15 games of the season since
attaining an 11-4 record in 1991.
11
Quin’s seventh interception, along with S James
Ihedigbo’s four interceptions, gives the Lions’ safety unit
a total of 11 on the season. Eleven interceptions by Lions
safeties equal the most interceptions by a Lions safety
group (11 in 2000) over the past 30 seasons.
12
With an interception against the Chicago Bears, the Lions
extended their current streak with an interception to
12-straight games. The current streak is the longest by
the Lions in a single season since 1981 (13), and the 1981
season was also the last time the Lions intercepted a pass
in 10+-straight games.

The Lions currently boast the League’s No. 2 defense when
it comes to points allowed as Detroit is holding opponents
to just 16.8 points per game through 15 games.

IRON LIONS
Lions veteran leaders C Dominic Raiola and LS Don
Mulhbach are among the NFL’s ironmen when it comes to
career games played.
By starting against Chicago on Thanksgiving, Raiola
became the first player in Lions history to start 200
games. He holds the team record for career starts,
which he set at Arizona (11/16) by surpassing LB Wayne
Walker who started 197 games from 1958-72. Raiola is
now the fi h active player in the NFL who has started
200 games.
By playing in Week 1 vs. the Giants, Raiola officially
played in his 14th NFL season and tied Hall of Fame CB
Dick LeBeau for third on the Lions all-time list for career
seasons played.
Currently in his 11th season with the team, Muhlbach
played in his 150th career game with Detroit against
Carolina in Week 2 (9/14). His current total sits at 163
games.

STAFFORD’S LATE GAME HEROICS
Stafford threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to RB Theo
Riddick with 29 seconds to play to give the Lions a 20-16
win over the Dolphins in Week 10 (11/9). It was Stafford’s
fourth game-winning TD pass in the final 30 seconds of the
fourth quarter. Stafford shares this mark with six players:
Steve Bartkowski, Drew Bledsoe, Tom Brady, Brett Favre,
Joe Ferguson, and Tommy Kramer, all of whom started at
least 100 regular-season games. Stafford has started only
76 (Super Bowl era), and he accomplished this in his 70th
career game.

STAFFORD’S GAME WINNING DRIVES
Throughout his career, Stafford has proven the ability to
bring the team from behind to claim victory and perform
great in the closing minutes of the game.
Thus far, Stafford has led the Lions to 17 victories when
trailing or tied in the fourth quarter or overtime. He has
six career game-winning touchdown passes with less
than one minute to play in fourth quarter (franchise
record) and six a er the two-minute warning.
With the Lions trailing 14-13 in the fourth quarter with
7:43 remaining in the game against Minnesota (12/14),
Stafford led the Lions on a 10-play drive, which started
at the Lions own 20-yard line, covered 65 yards and
culminated with a 33-yard field goal by K Matt Prater.
• This was also the fourth time this season Stafford
has led a game-winning drive. Stafford’s four-game
winning drives in the fourth quarter or overtime
match a career-single season high, equaling the four
he accomplished in 2011.
Down 16-13 with 3:13 le to play in Week 10 vs. Miami
(11/9), Stafford led the team on an 11-play, 74-yard drive
that was capped off with an 11-yard touchdown pass to
RB Theo Riddick. Stafford escaped the pocket and threw
against his body as Riddick grabbed the game-winning
score in the le corner of the end zone.
The Lions’ comeback win over Atlanta in Week 8 (10/26)
marked the second time in Stafford’s career that he has
led a fourth-quarter game-winning drive that ended on
the scoring play as time expired at the end of regulation.
The other occasion came on his first career game-
winning drive as a rookie when he threw a one-yard pass
to defeat the Cleveland Browns on November 22, 2009.

PASSING PRIDE CAREER
Among Lions QBs, Stafford has passed his way into Lions
lore by becoming the franchise leader in multiple categories.
CAREER YARDS
With 21,497 career passing yards, Stafford is the Lions’ all-
time leader in career yards and the only Lions QB to reach
20,000 career yards. With 362 in Week 11 at Pittsburgh
last season (11/17/13), Stafford broke the previous record
of 15,710 held by Layne, which has stood for 55 seasons
(1958). Stafford achieved this record in only 55 career
games. Layne reached 15,710 yards in 97 career games.
On Stafford’s 30-yard completion to WR Golden Tate
in the second quarter at Arizona (11/16), he surpassed
20,000 career passing yards. By reaching 20,000 career
passing yards in his 71st career game, he set a new
NFL record reaching that mark in the fewest career
games. (Courtesy Elias Sports Bureau). He broke the
previous record set by Hall of Fame QB Dan Marino who
accomplished this feat in 74 career games. Only two
other players besides Stafford (71) and Marino (74) have
reached 20,000 career yards in fewer than 80 games,
including QB Kurt Warner (76) and QB Peyton Manning
(78).
Stafford threw for 280 yards in the team’s 20-16 win over
Miami (11/9), and charted 19,953 passing through his
first 70 career games. He has totaled the most passing
yards in NFL history through 70 career games, which
includes 774 passing yards more than Dolphins Hall
of Fame QB Dan Marino (19,179) who has the second-
most through 70 games. Stafford was just 47 yards shy
of becoming the first player in NFL history with 20,000
passing yards through his first 70 career games.

PASSING PRIDE SEASON
With 4,650 passing yards in 2013, Stafford secured the
Top-3 single-season passing yards totals in Lions history.
His 2013 total ranks third behind his 2011 (5,038) and 2012
(4,967) numbers.
SEASON YARDS
Stafford, now with 4,040 yards this year, has reached
4,000 yards on the season and recorded his fourth career
4,000-yard season, an accomplishment he has done for the
fourth-straight year (5,038 in 2011; 4,967 in 2012; 4,650 in
2013; 4,040 in 2014). With 4,000+ passing yards this year,
Stafford joined QB Peyton Manning (5) and Hall of Fame
QB Dan Marino (4) as the only passers in NFL history with
four 4,000-yard seasons in a passer’s first six years in the
League.
Stafford is the second passer, along with Manning,
in history to record four-straight 4,000-yard seasons
during the player’s first six NFL seasons. He is one of six
quarterbacks overall in NFL history to throw for 4,000

over the past three seasons and has continued to establish
himself in 2014 as perhaps the best receiver in the League.

and recorded seven receptions for 113 yards and one
touchdown. Toward the end of the first quarter, Johnson
and Stafford connected on a 49-yard touchdown pass as
Johnson muscled his way past Miami CB Brent Grimes
to bring it down.
Johnson wasted no time flexing his muscles in the Lions’
Monday Night win over the Giants in Week 1 (9/8) as he
led all receivers with seven receptions for 164 yards and
two touchdowns, including a 67-yard TD catch from QB
Matthew Stafford on the opening drive of the game.

GAME INFORMATIONDETROIT LIONS
WR Golden Tate was one of the Lions’ top targets in free
agency this offseason, and his impact on Detroit’s offense
so far has been evident with his ability to create in open
space and move the chains. Through Week 16, Tate ranks
seventh in the NFL in receiving yards with 1,286 and fourth
in receptions with 96. This season marks the first time in
Tate’s career he has eclipsed 1,000 receiving yards.
Tate led the Lions with seven receptions for 38 yards and
scored the team’s only touchdown on a 7-yard score in
the second quarter vs. Minnesota (12/14). Tate now has
7+ receptions in eight games this season and has joined
three other players in Lions history (WR Herman Moore
in 1995 and 1996, Brett Perriman in 1996 and WR Calvin
Johnson in 2012) with at least eight games recording 7+
receptions in a season.

Tate’s 89 yards against the Bears (11/27) added to
his team lead in receiving yards as he reached 1,136
receiving yards through 12 games. Tate joined WR Pat
Studstill (1,191 in 1966), WR Herman Moore (1,234 in
1995), WR Brett Perriman (1,142 in 1995) and WR Calvin
Johnson (1,428 in 2012, 1,299 in 2013) as the only
players in team history to reach 1,100 receiving yards
through the season’s first 12 games.
Combined with his 154 yards in Week 7 vs. New Orleans
(10/19), Tate’s 151-yard game against Atlanta in Week 8
(10/26) made him just the third receiver in Lions history
with back-to-back 150-yard games, joining E Cloyce Box
(1952) and WR Calvin Johnson (2013) as the only players
in team history with back-to-back 150-yard games. Four
of Tate’s Top-5 receiving yard performances have now
come with the Lions.
QB Matthew Stafford’s 73-yard TD pass to Tate in the
fourth quarter vs. New Orleans (10/19) was the longest
pass play for a touchdown in the fourth quarter for the
Lions when trailing in a comeback win since QB Rodney
Peete and WR Herman Moore connected on a 93-yard
pass play with 14:48 to play at Minnesota October 31,
1992. In that game, Detroit trailed 27-17 and won 30-27.

  • 2. GAME INFORMATIONDETROIT LIONS A TRIBUTE TO MR. FORD William Clay Ford (1925-2014) Detroit Lions Owner and Chairman, 1964-2014 Beginning Week 1 this season, the Detroit Lions introduced a special jersey patch displaying the letters “WCF” in honor of the franchise’s late owner, Mr. William Clay Ford. The patch will appear on the le shoulder of all Lions players’ jerseys for the 2014 season as a tribute to one of the NFL’s original statesmen. Mr. Ford passed away on March 9 at the age of 88 and owned and directed the Lions franchise during a span of 50 years. Through five decades, his unwavering leadership provided stability to an organization, its fans and the community when most professional sports franchises cycled through numerous ownership changes and franchise moves. Mr. Ford remained steadfastly committed to ensuring the Lions were always a vital component to the Detroit community and the state of Michigan. THE NFL REMEMBERS MR. FORD NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell: “For five decades, Mr. Ford’s passion for the Lions, Detroit, and the NFL was the foundation of one of the NFL’s historic franchises. As an NFL owner, Mr. Ford helped bring the NFL through enormous periods of change and growth, always guided by his commitment to what was best for the NFL and his beloved Lions. All of us in the NFL extend our heartfelt sympathy to Mr. Ford’s wife Martha, Bill Ford, Jr. and the entire Ford family.” Dallas Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones: “I‘ve literally been at owners (meetings) when an owner came up and met Mr. Ford for the first time, and the owner was a new owner in the NFL. I was standing right with him and the owner talked about how his granddad had been a Ford dealer in Texas, in the depths of Texas, and he literally teared up when he talked about what Ford, what the brand and what the individuals stood for and had stood for in his evolving to the point that he could buy an NFL football team. He actually teared up and showed that kind of emotion, and that was (former Minnesota Vikings owner) Red McCombs.” Late Buffalo Bills Owner Ralph Wilson, Jr: “I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Bill Ford. He was a man of great integrity who loved his family and his Lions. Bill was well respected within our league as well as the city of Detroit and his contributions to both were numerous. We have all lost a good friend with his passing. My deepest sympathies and condolences go out to his family and many friends.” Lions Hall of Fame TE and Assistant Director of Pro Personnel Charlie Sanders: “I’ve always just enjoyed being around him just to watch him laugh. He was a cheerful owner, you know, upbeat, always positive. I have a lot of memories, but when I think of him I just think of a man that was very fair and enjoyed people and enjoyed people that had the same desires that he had. Most of those are centered around the Detroit Lions organization.” Former Lions WR Herman Moore: “Every single game that he was in the locker room, we at least spoke, or he would be in the locker room. I appreciated that from our owner. That’s a real moment that fans don’t know about — the commitment that he would show to us players.”

During that span, Indianapolis set NFL records with seven consecutive seasons finishing with 11+ wins (6, Dallas 1976-81) and 12+ victories (4, Dallas, 1992-95). Two of his quarterbacks, Manning (Super Bowl XLI) and Ravens QB Joe Flacco (Super Bowl XLVII) were named Super Bowl MVPs following their teams’ respective championship runs. Led the Ravens offense to a 5-2 record a er taking over as offensive coordinator late in the 2012 season as the team averaged 400.6 yards per game during that span. ASSEMBLING HIS TEAM In his first season in Detroit, Caldwell wasted no time put- ting together his coaching staff. He’ll lead by making people accountable and by being a role model on and off the field. And with his attention to detail and history of developing quarterbacks, (Matthew) Stafford is going to flourish just like Peyton Manning did with us in Indianapolis.” Baltimore Ravens General Manager Ozzie Newsome: “I believe it would be difficult to find anyone with the Ravens who is more respected than Jim Caldwell. That includes players, coaches and other staff members. He earned that because of the person he is and his extensive knowledge about football, including the keys to winning and his ability to teach all of that. Personally, it is a privilege to know him, and it was an honor to work with him.”

  • 6. GAME INFORMATIONDETROIT LIONS DASH AND SMASH The Detroit Lions’ running game has had a season full of ups and downs, but with the team’s playoff fate sealed, the ground attack seems to be clicking at the right time. RB Reggie Bush returned to the starting lineup last week against the Chicago Bears for the first time since Week 10, and wasted little time making his presence felt on the field. The ninth-year back picked up a crucial first down on the Lions’ third possession of the game, making a stellar fingertip grab on a short pass and turning it up field for a gain of 21. Bush then promptly burst to the outside on a handoff on the following play for a 13-yard touchdown, giving Detroit the early 7-0 getaway. Lions Head Coach Jim Caldwell on Bush’s contribution at Chicago: “Reggiedidanicejob.Reggiecertainlybroke a couple plays for us, made a huge difference and was able to score. I think he’s feeling a lot better and I think you can see it.” Bush’s solid day concluded with seven carries for 54 yards and a touchdown, along with six receptions for 44 yards in the passing game. Not to be outdone, Bush’s stable-mate RB Joique Bell put the Lions up for good late in the fourth quarter with a bulldozing 17-yard run to help cement Detroit’s 20-14 win over the Bears. Bell finished the day with 74 yards on the ground and a touchdown, while adding a pair of receptions for 13 yards. Bush on the running game against Chicago: “We made a point of emphasis to run the ball well. We knew that in order for us to win, this time of the year we need to be able to run the ball well. I think everybody on offense took that to heart and really focused on being successful today running the football. The offensive line did a great job, receivers did a great job blocking and tight ends did a great job. It really gave us a chance to really be successful and go out and make plays.” Bell has reached career highs in terms of carries (210) and rushing yards (800), and has the full endorsement of his head coach as the weather conditions worsen. The Lions next head north to take on their NFC North rival Green Bay Packers, for the division title and will need a good helping of dash and smash to bring it home for the first time since 1993. With Bell only seeming to get stronger as the calendar nears January and Bush back to running the way he’s capable of, Detroit’s backfield could just be getting started when it matters most. CaIdwell on how comfortable he is with Bell shouldering a larger role: “I do think that he’s got a body type that is certainly built for this kind of weather, but good backs, that’s what they do. He’s tough, he’s durable.” IN SUH MOUNTABLE Inagamewherethreeturnoversfromtheoffensecouldhave led to a Bears surge in scoring last week at Chicago, the Lions defense came through yet again and held the Bears to just 14 points on the day. A huge part of that success is because of the defensive line’s continued dominance this season led by DT Ndamukong Suh. In the Lions’ 20-14 win at Chicago, Suh registered 2 sacks, giving him five career multi-sack games (1.5+) and his fourth career 2+ sack game. By registering a multi-sack (1.5+) game against the Bears, Suh became the fourth Lions defensive tackle since 1982 to register five career multi- sack games. He is now tied with Doug English and Shaun Rogers for the most multi-sack games by a Lions defensive tackle since 1982. Caldwell on Suh’s performance: “As he always does, he’s tough, he does a tremendous job, great effort and performed well.” The Lions’ front man has played tremendous this season and was a huge part of the run defense success for Detroit. Suh now has 8.5 sacks on the season, which is the most he’s had since 2010. With two tackles for loss (TFL) at Chicago, Suh has reached 20 TFLs in a season for the first time in his career. He now has 2+ TFL’s in six different games this season, the most games with 2+ TFLs in a season during his career (4 in 2010 and 2012). Lions Defensive Coordinator Teryl Austin last week on why the run defense has ascended to such a high level: “I think it’s the guys up front, obviously, they’re the catalyst. The way we get off the ball, we’re very physical.” Suh and company will face Packers QB Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay next week for the NFC North crown. In the two teams’ previous meetings, the Lions defense outscored the Packers offense 9-7 thanks to a fumble return touchdown by S Don Carey and a safety from LB DeAndre Levy, and held Rodgers to just 162 yards passing. Suh on how excited he is about playing next week in Green Bay: “I’m always excited playing against Aaron Rodgers. I respect him, it’s a lot of fun going up there, and I think we got a big game. Obviously, we have a big game ahead of us just because they’re Green Bay and they’re the next game, simple as that.”

If he finishes (or ties) with the most interceptions in the NFL, he will become the first Lions player to lead the League in interceptions since Hall of Fame CB Lem Barney (10) in 1967. 7 Detroit won for the seventh time at home this season with a victory over Minnesota (12/14), which gives the Lions a 7-1 home record in 2014. A 7-1 home slate this year marks the best home record for the Lions since 1995 (7-1). 10 With 11 tackles (eight solo) in Week 15 vs. Minnesota (12/14), LB DeAndre Levy recorded his 10th game this season with 10+ total tackles. He joined LB Chris Spielman (13) as the only Lions defensive players to register 10+ tackles in at least 10 games since 1994. 11 With a 20-14 victory over the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field (12/21), the Lions claimed their 11th win this season to improve to 11-4. It marks the first time the Lions have won 11 games in the first 15 games of the season since attaining an 11-4 record in 1991. 11 Quin’s seventh interception, along with S James Ihedigbo’s four interceptions, gives the Lions’ safety unit a total of 11 on the season. Eleven interceptions by Lions safeties equal the most interceptions by a Lions safety group (11 in 2000) over the past 30 seasons. 12 With an interception against the Chicago Bears, the Lions extended their current streak with an interception to 12-straight games. The current streak is the longest by the Lions in a single season since 1981 (13), and the 1981 season was also the last time the Lions intercepted a pass in 10+-straight games. 16.8 The Lions currently boast the League’s No. 2 defense when it comes to points allowed as Detroit is holding opponents to just 16.8 points per game through 15 games. 17 Second-year CB Darius Slay currently leads the team with 17 pass defenses, which are also tied for sixth in the NFL. 63.8 Detroit’sdefensemaintaineditsstaggeringpaceagainstthe run by allowing 64 yards in the Lions’ 20-14 win at Chicago. • 10. GAME INFORMATIONDETROIT LIONS RUSH COVER Detroit ranks among the leaders in the NFL in applying pressure to the opponent’s passing game. The Lions have a combined 61 sacks and interceptions on the season, which includes 41 sacks and 20 interceptions. Overall, the Lions have allowed opponents to accumulate a passer rating of 80.8 on the season, which ranks fi h in the NFL. Applying pressure on the opposing quarterbacks has been consistent throughout the year as the Lions have accumulated a league-high 109 QB Hits. Since QB Hits were first added to press box total in NFL Gamebooks in 2006, the 109 QB Hits are the most by the Lions, behind only the team’s 100 QB Hits in 2012, in the past nine seasons. In Week 14 vs. Tampa Bay, the Lions tallied a season- high 14 QB hits, which also ranks as the highest single- single game total since 2006. 2014 NFL Leaders, Combined Sacks and Interceptions Rk Tm Sk Int Total 1 Buf 50 19 69 2 Det 41 20 61 3 Phi 49 11 60 2014 NFL Leaders, Opponent Passer Rating Rk Tm Att Cmp Pct Yds TD TD% Int Int% Rtg 1 Cle 551 313 56.8 3302 20 3.6 21 3.8 71.9 2 Buf 526 319 60.6 3148 16 3.0 19 3.6 74.9 3 Cin 525 313 59.6 3271 14 2.7 14 2.7 76.4 4 SF 511 301 58.9 3232 27 5.3 20 3.9 80.3 5 Det 569 365 64.1 3481 21 3.7 20 3.5 80.8 2014 NFL Leaders, QB Hits* Rk Tm QH 1 Det 109 2 Hou 107 3 Bal 103 * Based on press box totals Lions Leaders, QB Hits Since 2006 Rk Year G QB Hits 1 2014 15 109 2 2012 16 100 3 2007 16 93 4 2013 16 90 THIRD DOWN DOMINANCE ON DEFENSE Following up on last season’s top-ranking third-down defense, Detroit is currently tied for fourth in the League in opponent third-down percentage (35.6) through Week 16. 2014 NFL Leaders, Opponent Third-Down Efficiency Rk Tm Att Made Pct. 1 Buf 205 68 33.2 2 Ind 185 63 34.1 3 NYG 184 65 35.3 4 Det 194 69 35.6 In the team’s 17-3 win over Minnesota in Week 6 (10/12), the Lions held the Vikings to just three third-down conversions on 14 attempts (21-percent), thanks in large part to four sacks on third down. Stafford’s four-game winning drives in the fourth quarter or overtime match a career-single season high, equaling the four he accomplished in 2011. Down 16-13 with 3:13 le to play in Week 10 vs. Miami (11/9), Stafford led the team on an 11-play, 74-yard drive that was capped off with an 11-yard touchdown pass to RB Theo Riddick. Stafford escaped the pocket and threw against his body as Riddick grabbed the game-winning score in the le corner of the end zone. The Lions’ comeback win over Atlanta in Week 8 (10/26) marked the second time in Stafford’s career that he has led a fourth-quarter game-winning drive that ended on the scoring play as time expired at the end of regulation. The other occasion came on his first career game- winning drive as a rookie when he threw a one-yard pass to defeat the Cleveland Browns on November 22, 2009. CAREER YARDS With 21,497 career passing yards, Stafford is the Lions’ all- time leader in career yards and the only Lions QB to reach 20,000 career yards. With 362 in Week 11 at Pittsburgh last season (11/17/13), Stafford broke the previous record of 15,710 held by Layne, which has stood for 55 seasons (1958). Stafford achieved this record in only 55 career games. Layne reached 15,710 yards in 97 career games. On Stafford’s 30-yard completion to WR Golden Tate in the second quarter at Arizona (11/16), he surpassed 20,000 career passing yards. By reaching 20,000 career passing yards in his 71st career game, he set a new NFL record reaching that mark in the fewest career games. (Courtesy Elias Sports Bureau). He broke the previous record set by Hall of Fame QB Dan Marino who accomplished this feat in 74 career games. Only two other players besides Stafford (71) and Marino (74) have reached 20,000 career yards in fewer than 80 games, including QB Kurt Warner (76) and QB Peyton Manning (78). Stafford threw for 280 yards in the team’s 20-16 win over Miami (11/9), and charted 19,953 passing through his first 70 career games. He has totaled the most passing yards in NFL history through 70 career games, which includes 774 passing yards more than Dolphins Hall of Fame QB Dan Marino (19,179) who has the second- most through 70 games. GAME INFORMATIONDETROIT LIONS WR Golden Tate was one of the Lions’ top targets in free agency this offseason, and his impact on Detroit’s offense so far has been evident with his ability to create in open space and move the chains. Through Week 16, Tate ranks seventh in the NFL in receiving yards with 1,286 and fourth in receptions with 96. This season marks the first time in Tate’s career he has eclipsed 1,000 receiving yards. Tate led the Lions with seven receptions for 38 yards and scored the team’s only touchdown on a 7-yard score in the second quarter vs. Minnesota (12/14). Tate now has 7+ receptions in eight games this season and has joined three other players in Lions history (WR Herman Moore in 1995 and 1996, Brett Perriman in 1996 and WR Calvin Johnson in 2012) with at least eight games recording 7+ receptions in a season. Four of Tate’s Top-5 receiving yard performances have now come with the Lions. QB Matthew Stafford’s 73-yard TD pass to Tate in the fourth quarter vs. New Orleans (10/19) was the longest pass play for a touchdown in the fourth quarter for the Lions when trailing in a comeback win since QB Rodney Peete and WR Herman Moore connected on a 93-yard pass play with 14:48 to play at Minnesota October 31, 1992.
