IAQConsulting - Working for healthy indoor environments
The air we breathe should be free of harmful contaminants and contribute to our well-being by
being ‘fresh’ and free of odour. Whereas we all expect our drinking water to be clean and fresh we
tend to be less demanding with respect to air. Yet the evidence for poor air quality affecting our
health is strong and the evidence for poor indoor air quality affecting our ability to learn and
perform tasks at school and in the workplace is growing. Therefore defining and providing good
indoor air quality is of growing concern for a wide range of specialists concerned with the built
environment and public health. This is an issue for all buildings, especially our homes, offices,
schools as well as environments encountered during transport such as aircraft, cars and cruise ships.
Dr Derrick Crump has worked in public and private organisations undertaking consultancy and
research into provision of good IAQ for 35 years and published over 170 papers in journals,
conferences and books. He has worked with teams on a wide portfolio of projects ranging from
studies of air quality in individual buildings to national surveys of IAQ both in the UK and elsewhere.
He has particular expertise in the measurement and interpretation of IAQ data, including emissions
from products and the assessment of risks to occupant health, and he serves on a number of
national and European groups providing guidance and standard methods for practitioners. In recent
years he has worked increasingly on assessing the consequences for IAQ of introducing measures for
higher energy efficiency in the built environment. Clients in the last few years have included a
number of UK government departments (DEFRA, DfT, DCLG, DH, DWI), the European Commission,
NHBC Foundation, CEFIC, Gas Safety Trust, Arup, Geosyntec Consultants, Severn Trent Water, BRE
and Markes International.
Since leaving full time employment in academia in 2015 he is continuing to contribute to research
and consultancy projects in this field both though his own limited company and by association with
IEH Consulting (www.iehconsulting.co.uk) and as a Visiting Research Fellow at Cranfield University.
Derrick would be pleased to discuss your own interests and concerns about IAQ and would be happy
to explore opportunities to collaborate on future projects.
