IMPORTANCE OF WEARING PPES
•Harnesses and fall arrest systems--- injury from falls
•Safety glasses, face shields and goggles--- protecting face and eyes
•Respirators -prevent toxic fumes and particles from being inhaled
•Ear plug or ear muffs--- protects the ears from damage
NOTE:
Identifying hazards and wearing the proper level of personal protective equipment is essential to worker safety. It can

LOTO, what is it?
• Lockout/Tag out system – The prevention of the supply of energy to
machine through the use of individually attributed lock and key sets and
energy isolation and control.
• Energy forms include electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic,
chemical, thermal or any other energy type.
• Energy control – is done before any employee performs any servicing or
maintenance on a machine or equipment. The machine or equipment is
isolated from all the energy sources it might have and rendered
inoperative (electricity, steam, pressure, compressed air, etc.).
20. Creating value is our business
• Lockout
The placement of a lockout device on an energy
isolation device (e.g. valve, circuit breaker etc). This
ensures that the energy isolating device and the
systems it controls cannot be accidentally operated.
• Tag out
The placement of a warning tag on an energy
isolation device to indicate that the isolation device
and the system being controlled may not be
operated until the tag is removed by the authorized
person.

Why LOTO?
•Prevention of unexpected start-up or release of stored energy
•Serious injuries and death can occur as a result of power coming on unexpectedly
during maintenance or repair

• Authorized employees are those who perform repair work, servicing or
cleaning, preventative maintenance.
Use only approved locks and tags
A lock or tag must only be removed
by the person who applied it
Always use a multiple lockout hasp
in case others need to lockout
Where a machine or its supporting
equipment are to be worked on all
