We enhance lives and
strengthen communities
by teaching adults to read.
FOUNDED IN 1961, LIFT has been serving the North Texas community for over 50 years. Today, we
serve over 5,000 adult students every year through the dedication of over 350 volunteer teachers.

ADULT LITERACY
Adult Literacy classes improve
basic literacy instruction
with verbal practice on
reading, pronunciation, word
recognition, phonics
and basic writing skills.
Join Us
GED PREPARATION
GED Preparation increases
language, math computation
and the critical thinking skills
needed to successfully pass
the GED exam improving
job qualifications.
ESL
English as a Second
Language (ESL) English
immersion classes teach low
literate, non-English speaking
adults how to read, write,
speak, and understand the
English language.
FAMILY LITERACY
Family Literacy assists
academically at-risk students
to perform at grade level and
develop a love for reading
using registered therapy dogs.
1 in 5 adults
in North Texas
cannot read.
An estimated
23% of adults
in the U.S. score in the
lowest level on national
literacy tests. By improving
just one literacy level,
adults approximately
double their average
number of weeks worked
from 19 to 34 weeks
annually.*
A child’s ability
to read increases
if a parent is able to read
with them. The literacy
gaps created before first
grade are increasingly
more difficult to close
as the child transitions
to high school.*
59% of federal
prison inmates
either did not complete
high school or can be
classified as low literate.
There is a 70% chance
these inmates will return
to prison. That number
drops dramatically to
16% when they are given
literacy training.*
