MasterChef pop-up opens in London
Food cooked by finalists from the amateur cooking show can now be tasted by eager diners
MasterChef pop-up
From left to right, Ping Coombes, Jack Lucas and Natalie Coleman
Avid watchers of MasterChef will no doubt be delighted to hear that it's not not just Gregg Wallace and John
Torode who are lucky enough to try the toothsome culinary wares of Britain's best non-professional chefs. From 2
September-5 October, the MasterChef pop-up on London's South Bank will be serving dishes to the public so fans
finally get to experience the food first-hand, too.
Each week, three different finalists and winners of the hugely popular BBC show will be cooking for diners at a
temporary 130-cover restaurant in the Blue Fin Building, overlooking the River Thames. Open Tuesday-Sunday,
there's a three-course lunch, three-course dinner, or five-course tasting menu to choose from, and a brunch menu at
weekends. There's also a bar to hang out in.
MSN Food popped along and sampled Luke Owen's savoury shellfish arancini with prawn cocktail garnish; Jack
Lucas' succulent cannon of lamb with breaded shoulder croquette, pea and mint purée, mashed potatoes, anchovy
vinaigrette and redcurrant sauce; and Ping Coombes' delectable coconut and pandan panna cotta with chargrilled
pineapple, compressed mango, lime and lemongrass granita. Tastefully presented, each course was light and
colourful with some moreish flavour combinations. All in all, it made for a very agreeable experience, enhanced by
friendly, efficient service and a spectacular view over St Paul's and The Shard.

Tables are getting harder to come by but it's still worth trying to get a reservation. Chefs include Tim Anderson (winner
2011, cooking in week 2); Mat Folas (winner 2009, cooking in week 3); and Dhruv Baker (winner 2010, cooking in
week 4) - all increasingly recognisable names in the notoriously competitive restaurant industry. Here's hoping this
charming pop-up becomes an annual event.

No doubt backed by the bbc and licence payers instead of making new and interesting programmes.
