• Never camp on low ground next to streams
when rain is expected
• If flooding occurs go to high ground
• Stay away from streams, ditches, flooded
areas
• Adults should never drive thru flooded waters

Severe Thunderstorm/Lightning
• Lightning can strike 10 miles from storm
• Take shelter in a building or vehicle as soon as
you hear thunder
• Make sure you’re not the highest object
• Avoid water, open areas, isolated trees, picnic
shelters or metal objects
• If you’re caught in an open field spread out
100 feet apart and crouch down (like leapfrog)

• Get indoors to a closet or interior wall
• If you’re stuck outside get in a ditch or lay as
flat as possible

• Let an adult know if you and your buddy need
to leave the group/camping area
• Carry a whistle – 3 quick blows is the general
distress call

• Stay where you are.
• How can you help others who are looking for
you?
• Watch for searchers looking for you
• Plan how to stay dry and warm till you are
found.
