2. Based in Gray, Tennessee, David Psimer serves as
CEO of DP Builders and pursues building projects
across the state. Also an avid traveler, David
Psimer has visited numerous Canadian provinces
and a variety of areas throughout Alaska. One of
Alaska’s most distinct geographical regions is the
rugged, volcanic Aleutian Islands, which extend
from the Alaska peninsula to the maritime Bering
Sea border with Russia.
Extending some 1,100 miles, the island chain
encompasses 14 large islands and thousands of
smaller islets.
3. Most of the coastline is characterized by steep,
low mountains that rise directly from the sea.
Nearly devoid of trees, the islands are home to
various grasses, flowers, and sedges that thrive
in a climate of heavy rains and high winds. The
traditional Aleuts were hunters of maritime
animals such as sea lions, seals, and whales, and
also fished and ate mollusks and birds. With
villages situated on coastal locations offering
abundant fresh water, villagers traveled by kayak.
Today the fishing industry is a mainstay of the
Aleutian economy, and the town of Dutch Harbor
is a major regional port for fishing vessels and
canneries of all types.
