This should really say 2017 or 2018, since there is no wide spread use at this time!
4
This was the FAA email graphic during the Papal visit in September 2015
5
This penalty was proposed by the FAA on October 6th. It is an attempt to curb the
smaller illegal UAS operators from continued flight by hitting an egregious offender
with a large fine. I disagree with the idea that this type of flight is dangerous, but it
confirms it is illegal! We will talk about SkyPan more later.
6
Current options to obtain temporary legal flight privileges include a full COA – which
is slow, tedious and costly. But large UAS, difficult airspaces or exotic uses can be
approved this way.
Obtaining and airworthiness cert is extremely expensive and difficult and only makes
sense if it is for a million dollar aircraft that you will sell thousands of or will generate
millions in revenue almost immediately
The section 333 exemption has become easier to obtain as the request forms and
responses have become standardized. The FAA essentially becomes the public entity
sponsoring the COA(s)
7
These factors make us glorified hobbists
8
These are the most restrictive of the set of rules
9
Pure Keystone plug! But note that we have multiple systems approved, but only two
owned
10
The altitude restriction makes some work difficult and creates more flight time to
cover the same area with imagery/LiDAR.
FAA knows every location we fly, when and who flew it.
Airport restrictions are more flexible
11
Plot of the airspace surrounding Keystone that is a no-go because of airports. This
does not include restricted airspace and national parks that are no-fly zones
12
SKYPAN – how did they get in trouble – they have a 333 after all? It is the 500 foot
distance between buildings (not to mention that this shot is within 5 miles of at least
two airports!
13
Used by permission from Brian Murphy of Altavian – this highlights the 500 distance
between buildings, vessels, vehicles and persons
14
Levittown, PA – not within 5 miles of an airport, but is it worth the $500 - $1000 to fly
the house in the center for roof inspect if you have to obtain permission of every
home owner within the circle? Roads, buildings, etc. are generally off limits
15
But the future will be brighter, maybe
16
The next battle for UAS industry will be to convince ATC to allow work in their
airspace and not immediately deny it.
17
Proposed Rules do not equal final rules.
Will implementation be blocked by Congress in an election year?
18
I believe this is good for commercial operators as it is the hobbyists that are crashing
into stadiums and buzzing airports. However, will public accept all the oversight –
especially if they are required to log the locations of their flights!
19
The rules are changing daily, stay informed!
Can’t wait to platform an UltraCam Eagle on a large UAS to map all of Pennsylvania at
10cm!
