BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
DALE E. SHUTTLEWORTH, Ph.D.
Executive Director
The Training Renewal Foundation
Dr. Shuttleworth’s professional career as a community educator has included experience as a teacher,
school-community worker, consultant, principal, coordinator, school superintendent university course
director and executive director.
Career Highlights have included:
 the establishment of Canada’s first community school program
 first educational foundation
 first alternative school program policy
 first youth-related community development corporation
 first small business incubator operated by the voluntary sector
 first General Educational Development (GED) program leading to the Ontario
High School Equivalency Certificate
 first inner-city education policies
 first daycare in the school policy
He has been influential in policy development provincially, nationally and internationally in compensatory
education, community education and development, co-operative education, adult and continuing education,
daycare in the school, community resource learning, multiculturalism and race relations, youth employment
and training, community economic development, and business -education partnerships. He is the author of
more than 120 published articles in books, journals and periodicals. He has been a course director for the
Ontario Ministry of Education, York University, University of Toronto, Antioch University and Central
Michigan University. He has been a speaker and resource leader throughout Canada and the United States
and in Europe, Africa and Asia. He has served as Secretary and President of the Learning Enrichment
Foundation, President of the Ontario Community Education Association, the Social Planning Council of
Metropolitan Toronto, World Literacy Canada and the Network of Complementary Schools in the U.S.A.
and Secretary-Treasurer of the LEARNXS Foundation Inc. He is currently Executive Director of the
Training Renewal Foundation, the GED Preparation Centre and the BEST Institute of Technology serving
the training needs of social assistance recipients. He is also President of Can-Learn International –
specialists in educational travel and program planning.
In 1986, Dr. Shuttleworth was the recipient of the prestigious Dag Hammarskjold Gold Medal for
Excellence in Education from the Academic Diplomatique de la Paix (world diplomatic corps) in Brussels
and the Norman High Award from the Ontario Association for Continuing Education. In 1987, Dr.
Shuttleworth was also named an Expert/Consultant to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and
Development in Paris.
In 1988, he received the Colonel Watson Award from the Ontario Association for CurriculumDevelopment
and was made a Life Member of the Ontario Community Education Association. In 1990, he was
presented with the Outstanding Service Award from the Social Planning Council of Metropolitan Toronto .
In 1991, Dr. Shuttleworth was recognized as a Founding Member of the Canadian Council for Inner City
Education. In 1993, he was awarded the CANADA 125 MEDAL and his book, ENTERPRISE
LEARNING IN ACTION was published by Routledge in London and New York. In 1994, he was named
a “Distinguished Educator” by the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education. In 1996, he received the
“Educator of the Year” award from Phi Delta Kappa. In 1998, he was co-author of “HOW TO PREPARE
FOR THE GED – Third Canadian Edition” published by Barrons Educational Series in the U.S.A. In 2000,
Dr. Shuttleworth was named Lead Author/Consultant for the “Innovations in School Management Project”
at the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development in Paris, France resulting in the
publishing of the book “NEW SCHOOL MANAGEMENT APPROACHES” in 2001. That same year, he
co-authored “HOW TO PREPARE FOR THE GED” – Fourth Canadian Edition”. In 2003, he co-authored
“GED FOR DUMMIES” published by John Wiley & Sons in New York and authored “SCHOOL
MANAGEMENT IN TRANSITION” published by Routledge Falmer in London and New York. In 2010
the University of Toronto Press published his book “SCHOOLING FOR LIFE”, while John Wiley
published GED FOR DUMMIES 2nd Edition, GED FOR DUMMIES Canadian Edition and EL GED en
Español. That same year he was an author of PLAYING FAST & LOOSE published by the Campaign for
Public Education. In 2011, Cliffs Notes published the GED CRAM PLAN in the United States and in
2015, Cliff Notes published GED TEST CRAM PLAN 2nd Edition.
