[Running Head: [Theme: Insects or Bugs]
Activity 1
Activity name: “Making their own Insects or Bugs” for example: “Egg Carton Caterpillars”
Age group: preschool 3-5yrs old
Objective(s): (What should the child know or be able to do at the end of the activity? Why are
you doing this activity?)
Recognition of creativity of their own unique individual artistic abilities is their milestones for
early childhood educational learning abilities. This activity provides creative engagements in
sensory and creative artistic abilities in each own child’s unique individual learning styles and
abilities.
Developmental domain addressed: (cognitive, physical, communication, social/emotional,
adaptive – include a short paragraph explaining how the activity focuses on the chosen domain)
Children may learn to cognitively brainstorm all sorts of unique creative artistic ways of creating
their own caterpillars according to their own unique individual personalities. Children may learn
to physically use their small fine motor skills by creating their own caterpillars. Children will
emotionally experience a variety of different emotions: excitement from the creation of the
artistic project, curiosity of what each other’s insects or bugs will look like when finished and
inspirational learning for all the unique creations of different caterpillars (insects and or bugs)
that there are. Children may learn to socially communicate and share ideas about how to create
their own caterpillars; plus their similarities and or differences amongst one another’s artistic
creation of their caterpillars. Children will learn to socially communicate and share ideas about
their ethnic/culture similarities amongst one another’s backgrounds as to where they’re from and
what types of caterpillars (insects and or bugs) live where.
Environmental arrangement: tables and chairs set up with artistic and craft and science materials.
List of Materials:
• Egg cartons
• Assorted colors oil paint
• Assorted colored pipe cleaners
• Googol eyes
Tools/Equipment needed:
• Paint brushes
• White glue
2
[Running Head: [Theme: Insects or Bugs]
Method/Procedures:
1. The teacher and the children sit in a circle at a round table with chairs.
2. Then the children will paint their egg cartons caterpillars.
3. Children will pick from the pile of assorted colored pipe cleaners which ones they would like to
use.
4. Then the children will glue the colored pipe cleaners onto the egg cartons for the caterpillars’
antennas and legs.
5. And last the children will glue the googol eyes onto the egg cartons caterpillars’.
6. Dry 24 hours.
Guidance and Suggestions:
• Making their own insects or bugs could be difficult for some children to be able to accomplish at
their particular age group. There for some children may be so interested in all the materials being
provided; they will want to create a collage of materials.
• Display the final product of the children’s artwork all around the classroom at school.
• The children should be able to use glue containers with paint brushes to limit the amount glue
being used.
• Questions to be asked by the teacher to the children are: “What different kinds of bugs and or
insects are there?” “What kind of bug did you make?” Give examples of what different kinds of
bugs and or insects there are; such as butterflies, caterpillars, dragon flies, and so on.
Quick ideas for follow-up activities: (After doing this activity, where could you go from here?
(With the knowledge they have gained)
In an early childhood educational program, children will be learning and benefiting mostly from
having actual realistic examples of samples of insects such as caterpillars and butterflies in
nature houses in the classroom to be able to follow the unique phases of the different life cycle
stages caterpillars and butterflies. Children will absolutely love learning from having actual
realistic examples of insects such as caterpillars and butterflies in a nature walk.
