Soccer is one of the most popular sports in Europe, North America, and South America. Early evidence of soccer being played was found in China, it
mostly occurred in second and third centuries BC. During medieval times, it's thought that kicking, punching, biting, and gouging was allowed in
soccer. In 1365, King Edward III banned soccer because of the frequency of violent incidents. In 1424, a similar ban was made in Scotland, by King
James I. This everâpopular game has been played for over 3,000 years, and keeps getting new and better adjustments. The game of soccer took a big

middle of the halfway line, is the marked center of the field. Which is surrounded by a circle, with a diameter of 20 yards. During a kickâoff, opposing
players are not allowed inside of this circle. A spherical shape is required for all soccer balls in any professional or international game. It must be
made of leather, or something very similar to leather. The circumference of a soccer ball has to be between twentyâseven and twentyâeight inches.
Though, youth leagues often opt for a smaller ball, due to the smaller size of their players. Generally, matches are played by a total of twentyâtwo
players on the field at a time, eleven to a team, including the goalkeeper. If there is not at least 7 players on the field at match time, they will have to
forfeit that game. Every soccer player has to wear socks(long enough to cover the shinâguards completely), cleats, shinâguards, a jersey, and shorts. If a
player's equipment is deemed unfit by a referee, then that player will be taken out of the game. That being said, a referee is the ultimate authority on a
field. If a referee is questioned, more often than not, further disciplinary action is

In soccer there are many rules that have changed. Back in the 1700's the playing field was shaped like a square. There were only four major markings
on the field. They were the touchlines, goal lines, halfway line, and the eighteenâyard lines. When the Football Association (FA) was created in 1863,
the first uniform rules were made. FIFA now requires that soccer be played on a rectangular field between one hundred and one hundredâthirty yards
long and between fifty and one hundred yards wide. For international matches the field should be between one hundredâ ten and one hundredâtwenty
yards long and between seventy and eighty yards wide. There are two goals, one placed at each end of the field. They are eight feet tall, eight yards
across, and six feet deep. The lines that mark the sides of the field are called touchlines; those that mark the two ends of the field are called goal
lines. Also there are five other distinctive lines. They are the halfway lines, the goal areas, the penalty areas, the corner marks, and the center circle. In
1908 soccer was put in every summer Olympic Game. Since 1952 Hungary has won the most gold medals. By 1930 the interest in soccer was high
enough to ensure the success of the first World Cup. Even though only thirteen Countries entered that was still enough to have the first World Cup.

5. Influence Of Soccer On American Culture
The Embracement of Soccer The rest of the world lives and breathes soccer much like Americans live and breathe football. The world embraces
soccer because soccer brings people and their countries together. Nations throughout the world come together for 90 minutes to see what nation will
prevail so much so that soccer is said to be the unofficial universal language throughout the world. But many people in the U.S. have never watch a
full soccer game in their lifetime. This is why U.S. will never embrace the sport of soccer because of national dominance, money, and location unlike
the rest of the world. A lack of national team dominance within the U.S. is a major problem for the sport soccer for many reasons. The first reason is
due to the American culture about being the best. The quote "you have to beat the best before you can be the best" is very true for the American

The sport of soccer is heavily based around a tournament format. In other words, once a team wins a tournament they are then labeled a successful

normal basis. The Gold Cup is a tournament that the United State competes in with other North American teams and is hosted by North American
nation. The issue with this tournament is there are not many quality teams that compete in this tournament. The second problem with the location is
that the United States cannot compete for certain tournaments. A prime example would be the Euros that are held in Europe every four years. The only
teams allowed in this tournament are teams that are located inside of the continent of Europe. Therefore one of the major limitations for the growth

Sometime around 1050, Englishmen dug up a skull of a dane and started to kick it around in frustration toward the dane. It became known as
"Kicking the dane's head" .The skull began to hurt the boy's feet, so a boy came up with the idea of using an inflated cow bladder to help their
feet(Tuttle, 13).
In 1189, King Henry banned the game, because people were too involved in the game to practice archery and fighting for war(Tuttle, 13). During the
1500's the game shifted to Ireland where people invented the Irish rules that made the game tougher. As the game progressed it turned into soccer and

Since teams were not getting a fair amount of talent out of college, The NFL Draft was built in 1936(Encarta). This allowed teams to take turns

As soon as Professional football became more popular, College football began to also. During the 1930's college football created bowl games for the
good teams to compete with one another(Lorrimor and Devaney, 35). Among the most popular bowl games are the Rose Bowl, Cotton Bowl, Sugar

Seeing how much success the National Football League was having, The American Football League (AFL) was made in 1960(Lorrimor and
Devaney, 11). The AFL started with just 8 teams, and their play was very sloppy and not professional(Lorrimor and Devaney, 11). After a few seasons
the AFL became just as good as the NFL.
It got to a point where the American Football League was considered the better league of the two. The competition between the two leagues was
driving both of them into bankruptcy, so in 1966 the leagues finally made peace(Lorrimor and Devaney, 12). They decided not to fight over getting

Prior to this event, Nigeria had been in the middle of a civil war, but when Pele arrived to play in the match, the country called a 48âhour ceaseâfire

Soccer is a popular sport played all over the world. Even though it has only been popular in the United States for the past 30 years, soccer has been
a long time favorite most everywhere else. The sport dates back to the Egyptians, who played games involving the kicking of a ball. Now, the sport
has grown to a global pastime, including men's and women's teams, and the World Cup (which is played every four years). Soccer originated with
kicking games played by people in ancient civilizations. The modern version came about in the early nineteenth century, in England. It started as a
game involving kicking and handing, but later this branched off into two separate sports: rugby and football (which is what the English call soccer).

In addition to the field itself, all that is needed for a game is two goals (eight feet high and eight yards apart) and a ball. Each player wears hard
plastic or padded shingaurd, covered by long socks, for protection during play. Cleats are also worn for traction on the field. A goalie may also
wear a special padded shirt, and gloves to protect his or her hands. A standard field, as regulated by the Federation Internationale de Football
Association (or FIFA), has a length between 100 and 130 yards, and a width of between 50 and 100 yards. The rules of play for soccer have
deliberately been kept simple. The referee makes most of the decisions, and attempts to encourage fair play. The game starts off with a kick off, and
the teams are allowed to pass, dribble, juggle, head, kick, and shoot the ball to place it down the field, and (hopefully, or eventually) into their
opponent's goal. If the ball is kicked off the field over the length of the field, the other team is given a throwâin, where the ball is thrown over the
player's head, and back onto the field. If the ball is kicked over the goal, or across the width of the field, either a corner kick results (by the offensive
team, where the ball is placed on the corner of the field and kicked into play) or the defensive team is awarded a goal kick, where the ball is placed on
the corner of the goal box, and kicked back into play. If a goal is scored, the ball is taken back to the center of

Every four years, thirtyâtwo countries from around the world gather â after going through a grueling qualifying process â to compete for the honor of

instance, a ball was used because the sky was circular and a square court because the earth was believed to be square. Just as there were twelve
months in a year, twelve players would be in the game of cuju, six players for each team. The game was extremely violent, allowing players to
collide aggressively with each other without any penalties. Not surprisingly, in the beginning, the sport was practiced by soldiers only, not by the
