2. Danielle’s Manifesto
Free Legal Advice Centre
We are the only university in Ireland that does not provide its students with a Free Legal Ad-
vice Centre on campus. This would run as a weekly drop-in clinic and a fortnightly appoint-
ment-only clinic, and be run by the Welfare Office and local solicitors on a voluntary basis.
Student Safety
In light of recent events I believe that student safety should be at the fore of the Welfare Office’s
concerns:
• Free Self-Defence Classes
• Personal Safety Workshops
• Increased talks and demos on Road Safety, Water Safety and Alcohol Safety
• Start UL talking about sexual assault/violence, domestic violence and unhealthy rela-
tionships
• Create an on-campus clinic regarding the above “a safe place to talk”
• Promote and improve SafeCabs
Freshers Buddy Programme
A mentoring programme for incoming freshers similar to the International Buddy Scheme.
First years will be given a mentor from their course of study to assist them with any questions
or troubles they may encounter.
Exam Well-Being
Running exam-time events e.g. outdoor yoga, 5 a-side soccer, board games in the courtyard to
ensure that our academic performance is not affected by stress and anxiety.
Mental-Health
• To continue the fight to reduce mental health stigma and to get UL talking about mental
health.
• Late-night phone service developed with the College Counseling Service to provide as-
sistance to students who need someone to talk to outside of “office hours”
Student Spaces
Student friendly spaces are imperative for the general well-being of students and should not be
centered solely around study or alcohol. I plan to promote and develop the SU Common Room
as a place to distress.
Drug Awareness
We cannot ignore that students come into contact with drugs, however no matter what views
you hold, adequate information, education and support needs to be made available.
