2. In 1942 an auxiliary airfield was established at
Groom Lake in Nevada, 83 miles north-northwest of
Las Vegas.
The term “Area 51” came from the location
designation on the map.

3. Originally, it was used by crews preparing for World War
II, who used the extensive Nellis Air Force Base Range
for target practice.

4. After World War II, the land to the west became the
Nevada Test Site, where 1,021 nuclear weapons were
detonated.
921 of those were underground.

5. The Groom
Lake Facility,
has been
known by
various names
such as
Paradise
Ranch,
Dreamland, and
Watertown.
Area 51 is the
location’s
designation on
the map of the
area.

6. Workers are flown daily from Las Vegas to Area 51
aboard an un-marked jet, nicknamed Janet.

7. It is known that the F-117 Stealth Fighter was
tested there.

rumors
of even
more
advance

aircraft
being
test
flown at
Area 51

9. There are other rumors. Isolated in
the desert, nuclear wasteland to the
west, Area 51 is one of the most
secure places in the world. I visited
the perimeter with a crew from the
Syfy Channel.
