To provide the students with a knowledge of concrete and soils as major civil engineering materials.
To develop the student's ability to source and process information.
Cement: 10% Production of cement, modern cements, modern cements in sustainable construction, cement replacement materials.
Aggregates: 15% Specification of aggregates for concrete, sampling procedures, Testing and analysis of results.
Concrete: 15% Specification of concrete, quality control, Concrete production, placing and compaction, curing concrete and concrete decay.
Soil: 10% Classification of soils, consolidation and compaction, site investigation.
Laboratory work: 50% Carry out a range of experiments on soils, aggregates and concrete.
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to
1. Be competent in the specification, design and use of concrete.
2. Have a basic understanding of the classification and properties of soil.
3. Be able to sample and prepare the relevant materials for testing.
4. Have demonstrated a practical ability to carry out laboratory experiments in both concrete and soil and produce appropriate laboratory reports.
5. Be able to supervise and control the use of these materials on site.
6. Be familiar with the relevant Irish and European standards.
