2. Cleves Edelweiss
Although formally integrated into Sofia, Boyana has its own atmosphere, and much of interest. A mile away
from Cleves Edelweiss is the intriguing Kinocentre Boyana - the largest film production facility in the Balkans.
Owned these days by a Los Angeles film company, it was originally established in 1962 as the state-owned
Boyana Film Studios. In recent years films made there have included Spartacus, Morgan Freeman’s The
Code, and The Black Dahlia starring Scarlett Johansson.
Vitosha Mountain, which dominates Boyana, has much to offer - magnificent hiking, skiing, horse riding,
and paragliding. Particularly well known are the 15m high Boyana Waterfall - especially impressive in spring
when the snows are melting - and the horseshoe shaped Kopitoto that has magnificent views of the city. In
winter Vitosha’s skiing makes Sofia one of the few capitals in the world where you can be slaloming down
the slopes less than an hour after leaving your office desk. These days Vitosha even provides night skiing.
