Leaders bring out the best in others
-If you want your staff members to believe they are winners,
then you must act as though they already are, treating them as
such.
-Offer positive reinforcement, connect with them, take the time
to listen to them and get to know them.
-Making a personal connection to get to know staff members on
a personal level is key.
Leaders find creative ways to recognize contributions and
achievements
-Nomatterhow large or small the achievement, all accomplishments
are to be recognizedandasKouzes& Posner(2012, p.272) state,
"leadersfindcreativewaystocelebrate accomplishments.Theytake
time outto rejoice inreachingamilestone."
-Recognitiondoesnotalwaysmeangivingsomethingtangible;"praise
and coachingare significantformsof recognitionaswell"(p.275).
Recognizing contributions is about beingthoughtful
-The examplesinthe firstvideoillustratehow feedbackis
incorporatedregularlyasrecognitionintothe workenvironmentjust
as FatherDyer andDavidCunninghamrecognizedtheirstaff in
personal andmeaningfulways.Some incorporatemore formal
ceremoniesaswasthe case withDavidCunningham'sexample,
however,Kouzes&Posnerremindusthat"whenyougenuinelycare
eventhe smallestof gesturesreapshuge rewards(p.294).
Spontaneous,enexpectedrewardstendtobe construedasmore
meaningful thanexpectedformal ones.
Recognition should be personalized
- Kouzes&Posnerstressthe importance of personalizingrecognition,
and state that "recognitionshouldbe personalized;otherwise,itwill
quicklybe forgottenanddiscounted.Itshouldbe made andexpressed
fromyour heart"(p.285). Examplesgiveninthe cohortresponses
includedhandwrittencardsmailedtoone'shome;aphototakenwith
a thoughtful captionthatwasthensentout to all staff;a sweettreat
for someone whoenjoyedaparticulardessert.
