1. March: Week One
MARCH MADNESS- “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year”
*NOTE: This week,we will be doing stations with each activity listed below. There will need to be at
least 2-3 tutors per stations. Each tutor needs to remain at their station for the activities, this way the
students can meet all of you! All stations will have instructions along with them.
STATION ONE:
Activity-The Road to the Championship
Materials: map of the United States (printed), list of teams (printed), list of capitals of states (printed), star
stickers, markers, pencils
Each student will have a list of teams that are listed along with their state. The students will pick their top
5 teams. Each student will place a star where the teams are located. With each location, the student will
write in the state’s capital.
The students will place a different sticker shape on the location of the championship game.
Location: AT&T Stadium, Arlington, TX
The students will draw a line from their teams to the championship location.
Worksheet-The Road to Championship
The worksheet will go along with the map activity. The students will answer the questions on the
worksheet when they are finished with their maps.
STATION TWO:
Activity-NBA Bar Graph
Materials: Bar graph, bags with colored squares, statistic sheet
Each student will pick be given a player. In chronological order, according to the players listed on the
sheet, the students will place the points. Each student will make a bar for each player. The squares equal
one point on the left hand-side (e.g: one square,20 points; two squares,21 points…). Each square color
coordinates with the team’s colors. At the end, the bar graph should demonstrate a decreased bar graph;
showing the points per game is lowering with each player.
*Each color=a team color, do not separate
*Each square=one point
*The points decrease; the bar graph will decrease
*Ask the students: what does the graph show, why does it decrease, who has the most/least points, what
color is seem the most?
STATION THREE:
2. Activity-Basketball Court: Nouns vs.Verbs
Materials: basketball court, notecards (labelled)
The students will separate the words into two categories. The court is split in half-nouns and verbs. The
number below the scoreboard represents how many words should go below each category.
This is a simple, straightforward activity.
To make the activity more challenging, ask the students to act out each verb and to describe the nouns.
