The book is developed to aid in building good
reading habits in young readers, fluency and
comprehension. The joy of reading is cultivated
in children through the use of meaningful and
engaging texts combined with fantastic artwork
to help young readers understand, learn, and
love reading. The book also tests factual recall and
inferential understanding with variety of
exercises that have been included for each story.

Anita and the Cake
Anita wanted to make a cake for
her father’s birthday. She went
out to the supermarket to buy,
eggs, flour and chocolate. In the
kitchen, Anita mixed all the things
she bought together in a bowl then
she put it in the oven. After one
hour, the oven smelled good. Anita
looked at the oven and the cake
was cook. She put the cake in a
beautiful plate and put a candle
on it. Then she left it on the table
to call her dad. Anita’s dog, Tiger,
smelled the yummy cake and took
a big bite!

Once upon a time, there was a
carpenter who told the king that
his daughter could spin straw into
gold. The king called the daughter
and locked her in a room of straw.
“Turn this straw into gold” he said.
The carpenter’s daughter cried and
cried then a small man appeared
and asked why she was crying. “If
I don’t turn this straw into gold
I will be locked in this room,” she
said. The small man helped her but

asked for her necklace.
The next day, the king was so happy
to see the gold! He put the girl into
a bigger room with straw. “Turn all
this straw into gold!” said the king.
The carpenter’s daughter cried and
cried and the small man appeared
again. The small man said “I will
help but I want your ring.” When
the king came in the room the next
morning, he was very happy. The
king moved the girl into an even big-
ger room. This time, he said that he
would marry her if she turned all the
straw to gold.
The small man appeared again and
offered his help. But the carpenter’s

daughter has nothing, so the small
man said he wanted her first born
baby. The carpenter’s daughter did
not know what to do but she said
yes because she was scared to be
locked in the room. Again the small
man turned the straw into gold. The
king soon married the carpenter’s
daughter and they had a beautiful
baby together.
One stormy night, the small man
returned to get the baby. She gave
the small man gold and money but
the small man said “No. But if you
can guess my name, I will disappear
forever.”

now a queen sent a messenger to
follow the small man. The messen-
ger heard the small man signing, “My
name is RUMPLESTLTSKIN!”
The messenger run back to tell the
queen and when the small came back
after a week, the queen shouted
the name “RUMPLESTILTSKIN!” in a
puff of smoke, the small man disap-
peared forever.

Jack lives with his Mum. They are very
poor. One day, Mum sends Jack to the

Jack meets an old man. The old man gives

that the beans have magic.

Beanstalk When Jack returns home, his Mum
is so angry with him and she throws
the beans out of the window. In the
morning, when Jack wakes up, he sees
a giant beanstalk outside their house.

He climbs the beanstalk and at the
top of the beanstalk on the clouds
is a castle. He goes inside the castle
and he sees a sack full of gold coins,
a hen that lays golden eggs and a
harp that plays music.
Suddenly, a giant comes, he smells
Jack and said, “Fee Fi Fo Fum!” Jack
quickly hides under the table. The
giant eats his dinner and falls asleep
to the sound of the harp playing. Jack
jumps out under the table and he got
all the coins, the hen and the harp.

But the harp cries out and the
giant wakes up and runs after
Jack. Jack runs so fast and
climbs down the beanstalk and
shouts to his Mum to cut down
the beanstalk. His Mum takes
an axe and chops it down, so
the giant cannot come down
from his castle.
