A X is a deep, broad ditch, either dry or filled with water, that
surrounds a castle, other building or town, historically to provide it
with a preliminary line of defence. In some places X evolved into
more extensive water defences, including natural or artificial lakes,
dams and sluices. In later periods the X or water defences may be

X ( Latin: “may you have the body”) is a writ, or legal action,
through which a prisoner can be released from unlawful detention,
that is, detention lacking sufficient cause or evidence. The remedy
can be sought by the prisoner or by another person coming to their
aid. X originated in the English legal system to assist wealthy
landowners, but it is now available in many nations. It has
historically been an important legal instrument safeguarding
individual freedom of certain individuals against arbitrary state
action. It is a writ requiring a person to be brought before a judge.

51. 25)Give me X
X, is a novel by the French writer and nobleman Donatien
Alphonse Franois, Marquis de Sade, written in 1785. It tells the
story of four wealthy male libertines who resolve to experience the
ultimate sexual gratification in orgies. To do this, they seal
themselves away for four months in an inaccessible castle in
Saint-Martin-de-Belleville, France, with a harem of 46 victims,
mostly young male and female teenagers, and engage four female
brothel keepers to tell the stories of their lives and adventures. The
women’s narratives form an inspiration for the sexual abuse and
torture of the victims, which gradually mounts in intensity and
ends in their slaughter. The work remained unpublished until the
twentieth century. In recent times it has been translated into many
languages, including English, Japanese and German. Due to its
themes of sexual violence and extreme cruelty, it has frequently
been banned.

53. 26) Give me the name of the painting
The well-known surrealist piece introduced the image of the soft
melting pocket watch. It epitomizes X’s theory of ”softness” and
”hardness”, which was central to his thinking at the time. As
Dawn Ades wrote, ”The soft watches are an unconscious symbol of
the relativity of space and time, a Surrealist meditation on the
collapse of our notions of a fixed cosmic order”.This interpretation
suggests that X was incorporating an understanding of the world
introduced by Albert Einstein’s Special Theory of Relativity. Asked
by Ilya Prigogine whether this was in fact the case, X replied that
the soft watches were not inspired by the theory of relativity, but
by the surrealist perception of a Camembert cheese melting in the
sun. Although fundamentally part of X’s Freudian phase, the
imagery precedes his transition to his scientific phase by fourteen
years, which occurred after the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and
Nagasaki in 1945.

54. 26) Give me the name of the painting (continued...)
It is possible to recognize a human figure in the middle of the
composition, in the strange ”monster” that X used in several
period pieces to represent himself the abstract form becoming
something of a self-portrait, reappearing frequently in his work.
The orange clock at the bottom left of the painting is covered in
ants. X often used ants in his paintings as a symbol for death, as
well as a symbol of female genitalia. The figure in the middle of
the picture can be read as a ”fading” creature, one that often
appears in dreams where the dreamer cannot pinpoint the
creature’s exact form and composition. One can observe that the
creature has one closed eye with several eyelashes, suggesting that
the creature is also in a dream state.
