Student Awards — A Big Benefit
Each year thousands of worthy SAIT Polytechnic students receive $3.6 million in awards, scholarships and
bursaries from our donors. A student award can mean the difference between attending SAIT or not, or
having to work and taking longer to graduate. We believe that helping students manage their debt load
before they graduate will make it easier for them to start their careers off right, and start giving back to
the community sooner.
Knowing that people they’ve probably never met before care about their future is the overwhelming
sense of gratitude students feel when they win an award. Here is what some of SAIT’s award recipients
have to say:
“As a student returning to post-graduate studies and risking much to follow my passion, it has
not been a path void of challenges. Receiving this generous award has lifted a huge burden off
my shoulders, but more importantly, has reinforced my determination to follow through with my
program while performing at my highest ability.”
— Ranjene Muzumdar, Film and Video Production ‘11
“My family arrived here as landed immigrants two-and-a-half years ago and tried very hard to assimilate
to the culture, weather and environment. This award is a manifestation of acceptance, telling me that I am
a part of this country, Canada.”
— Manuelito Malveda, Power Engineering Technology ‘11
“With awards like these we can concentrate on our studies, especially during exam time, without having
to worry as much about money. This award helps me financially, but it also makes me feel good to be
recognized for my hard work and dedication to my studies.”
— Jude Polsky, Architectural Technology ‘11
“Working on cars and building a career around cars is something I have wanted to do since I was a little
kid, and now I will be able to fulfill that dream with the help of this scholarship. It will lessen the amount
of student loans that I will have to take to pay for tuition and tools. Hopefully I will become successful
enough so that one day I can donate to a scholarship and give other students the same opportunity that I
was given.”
— David Million, Automotive Service Technology ‘11
“Having two young children and attending school full time is not easy, but now I can breathe easier and
not focus on worrying about money. This award has also given me the opportunity to demonstrate to my
daughters that hard work and dedication pays off.”
— Sigcwalisiwe Ntaka, Business Administration ‘11
“Entering the Diagnostic Medical Sonography field is a career change for me and it was a choice that was
not easy to make. There were many issues to contemplate before making the decision. This award is a
validation of that decision and is encouragement to strive for the constant improvement of oneself.”
— Marina Choy, Diagnostic Medical Sonography ‘11
We often hear from our donors about the many reasons they give – to honour relatives, to support
specific programs they feel passionately about and to leave legacies. But they all give to make a
difference in a student’s life. They give because they want to help students achieve their dreams and be
successful. Through the strong support of our donors, many of whom are SAIT alumni, the number of
awards will continue to grow.
Read on, apply and take advantage of $3.6 million in awards available to you as a SAIT student.

Student Awards Guide 2011-2012 3
Award Types
SAIT offers more than 3,250 awards to its students, with most falling into
one of the following four categories: Entrance, General,
School—Nominated and Government.
Entrance
Entrance awards are designated for students who are beginning a new
program. In some instances they are program-specific and in others,
students in all programs may apply.
The 2012—2013 Entrance awards will be available commencing November
2011 and will be open for application until May 2, 2012. In November,
please visit Student Awards at sait.ca or look in the Entrance Awards
Guide to see a listing of these awards.
General
General awards are undesignated awards that, in most circumstances,
any student in any program may apply for if they meet the criteria
outlined in this guide.
School—Nominated Awards
These awards are designed by the academic school and are program
specific. Contact your Academic Chair for more information on applying
online. SAIT awards take the form of bursaries, prizes or scholarships.
Bursary — Financial need is the primary criteria used for selection,
however, other criteria may also be included.
Prize — Non-cash awards including such items as plaques, medals and
prizes awarded for a specific accomplishment (academic or
non—academic).
Scholarship — Academic achievement is the primary selection criteria,
however, other criteria may also be included such as financial need,
community involvement, etc.
Government Funded
These awards are issued directly by the government. All details on these
awards can be found by visiting alis.alberta.ca/scholarships.
Award Criteria
SAIT awards are given based in whole or in part on the following criteria:
Academic Achievement — A pre—determined Grade Point Average (GPA).
Financial Need — Financial need is determined by assessing a student’s
income and expenses for the academic year. Students receiving student
loans may still be considered in financial need.
Community Involvement — Participation in community events,
volunteer commitments with non—profits and/or charities, and
involvement in extracurricular activities such as sports or church
is important to include in your application.
** Some awards may include additional criteria as specified by the donor.
Some examples may include your family status, your heritage or your chosen
profession. Please read through the guide carefully to ensure that you meet all of
the criteria and apply only for the awards for which you are eligible.

General Information
Who may apply?
If you are enroled at SAIT as a continuous, full-time student or
apprentice you may be eligible to apply. There are exceptions for part-
time and distance learning students that are outlined in the guide, so
please review the criteria carefully.
I’m an international student —
am I eligible?
Yes, students who are citizens of countries other than Canada and
who have been accepted at SAIT on a student visa are eligible for SAIT
student awards. In order to collect the award however, an International
student must have either a Social Insurance Number (SIN) or an
Individual Tax Number (ITN). International students should contact
the SAIT International Student Office for details and assistance. The
office may also suggest other awards that are directed specifically to
international students.
If I win an award — how will I know?
SAIT Alumni and Development will notify students selected for awards
within four months of the application deadline. Recipients will receive
an email, telephone call or written notification as to when the award
may be obtained.
How to Apply
All applications can now only be accepted online at mySAIT.ca. Click
on the myStudent tab and look under the Finance Information section
for Scholarships and Awards. By typing in your student ID, only the
awards you are eligible for based on your program will be viewable. One
application form lists all the awards you are eligible for — simply check
off the awards on the form. Apply anytime, anywhere. It’s that simple.
application deadlines
Apply online ahead of time!
Please pay specific attention to deadlines for each unique award. Note
that deadlines are firm and cannot be extended.
Application Tips
Read the Criteria
Read the conditions for each award carefully. Please do not apply for an
award if you do not meet the essential criteria. This will save you time
in the essay section by eliminating essays that you do not have relevant
information for.
A Word About Your References
Choose your references with care. Employers, religious leaders,
community leaders, teachers and instructors can serve as excellent
references. Ideally your references should have known you for a
minimum of six months. Avoid using members of your family, best friends
or roommates. Please advise your references of the award for which you
are applying and inform them of the specific criteria of the award so that,
if required, they may indicate why you are a suitable candidate. They
should always try to address your current attributes and skills.
Financial Information
If you are applying for any awards that have financial need as a criteria,
you must fill this section out. Please provide accurate information on
monthly expenses and income. If you are unsure of exact amounts,
please provide an estimate.
Essays, Written Documentation,
Specialty Criteria
Please read these sections carefully and answer the questions as
specifically as you can. It is best to provide as much detailed information
as possible.
Taxation of Scholarships
and Bursaries
The full amount of scholarships, fellowships, or bursaries are not
taxable and are no longer reported as income on your tax return. The
scholarships, fellowships, or bursaries must be received by you as a
student with respect to your enrolment in a program that entitles you
to claim the Education Amount (Form T2202, Education and Textbook
Amounts Certificate). If you are not eligible for the education amount,
report on line 130 only the amount that is more than $500.
For Government funded awards, the T4As are issued by Alberta Advanced
Education — Students Finance will show the tax amount of scholarships
and bursaries in Box 28 — Other Income. Box 38, shows the footnote code
as 05, which is for Scholarships/Bursaries. This amount should not be
reported on your tax return, as long as you are eligible for the Education
Amount (Form T2202, Education and Textbook Amounts Certificate).”
If you are unsure of your tax status, contact the Canada Revenue Agency
at: 1.800.959.8281 or cra.gc.ca.
PLEASE NOTE:
• All awards, amounts and numbers of awards, as listed in the guide, are
subject to receipt of funding. In the event of program cancellation,
awards will be reallocated to a program area designated by Alumni and
Development.
• If there is a discrepancy between the published award criteria or
value and the official award documentation located in the Alumni
and Development department, the official documentation is deemed
accurate. Award criteria and values are subject to change.

Elizabeth Steinburg
Mom in a Non-Traditional Trade
Elizabeth Steinburg was a high school math teacher for ten years before deciding
to make a career change. She traded her classroom and chalkboard for the world of
electrical motors, transformers and digital electronics.
Steinburg enroled in SAIT’s Electrical Engineering Technology (EET) program.
“A big part of the decision was that a lot of my fellow teachers were being laid off. I
looked at the future of the teaching profession and realized it wasn’t going to get a lot
better,” says Steinburg. “I’ve always followed a non-traditional path. I’m good at math
and physics and I knew there was a lot of math and theory in the EET program. ”
Deciding to come back to school wasn’t just a personal decision; it was a family
decision. Steinburg has two young daughters at home. Steinburg knew her student
loans weren’t going to provide enough family income, so she enlisted the help of the
Student Awards Guide.
“I have a very well marked catalogue of all the different scholarships,” says Steinburg.
“For the rewards, it really isn’t that much work. I spent maybe an hour tops filling out
the online forms. It’s important to me because I needed all the help I could get.”
Steinburg’s work ethic and program choice made her the perfect candidate for the
CN Scholarship for Women, an award that recognizes women in a non-traditional
trade. She also received the Norman Bakken Memorial award, which is determined by
the positive attitude of the applicant.
Steinburg says that the awards provided “a little extra wiggle room for birthday presents
and other family expenses. It’s nice to have that cushion that scholarships provide.”
The big celebration will happen when Steinburg walks across the stage and graduates
from Electrical Engineering Technology at SAIT in 2012.
“The whole country is my oyster! First of all, I would really like to find a job in the
industry. I’m also looking forward to being flexible with time and money again...it’s
going to be really exciting!”

Xumei Chen
Life Long Learner
“When I came to Canada, I could not speak English very well so I worked labour jobs,
which was very tough on the body, “ says Xumei Chen. “I had a workplace accident
that injured my leg and I realized I had to go back to school and learn English.”
Like many immigrants, Chen lacks English language skills but has a great deal
of education. Chen holds a degree in Textile Engineering and a certificate in
International Business from Chinese post-secondary institutions. When the textile
industry took a downturn, Chen became a consultant helping foreign investors do
business in China. After he was laid off in 1999, Chen applied to come to Canada as an
independent immigrant ready to start a new life.
Before Chen could enrol in a post-secondary program in Canada, he had the
enormous task of learning English. He studied English as a Second Language at
Chinook Learning Centre and after 16 months of classes he was able to enrol in SAIT’s
Business Administration diploma program. Chen’s perseverance and dedication paid
off when he was awarded the Hong Kong Canada Business Association award.
“Winning the award was very encouraging for me because my hard work had been
recognized,” says Chen. “My English isn’t fluent, and at my age, I must take more
time to study to get good marks. It was very motivating and inspiring.”
With a SAIT Polytechnic diploma added to his list of accomplishments, Chen is
mapping his future with further education. His goals are to work part-time while
completing a bachelor’s degree in finance and to open a small restaurant in China.

  • 2. Student Awards — A Big Benefit Each year thousands of worthy SAIT Polytechnic students receive $3.6 million in awards, scholarships and bursaries from our donors. A student award can mean the difference between attending SAIT or not, or having to work and taking longer to graduate. We believe that helping students manage their debt load before they graduate will make it easier for them to start their careers off right, and start giving back to the community sooner. Knowing that people they’ve probably never met before care about their future is the overwhelming sense of gratitude students feel when they win an award. Here is what some of SAIT’s award recipients have to say: “As a student returning to post-graduate studies and risking much to follow my passion, it has not been a path void of challenges. Receiving this generous award has lifted a huge burden off my shoulders, but more importantly, has reinforced my determination to follow through with my program while performing at my highest ability.” — Ranjene Muzumdar, Film and Video Production ‘11 “My family arrived here as landed immigrants two-and-a-half years ago and tried very hard to assimilate to the culture, weather and environment. This award is a manifestation of acceptance, telling me that I am a part of this country, Canada.” — Manuelito Malveda, Power Engineering Technology ‘11 “With awards like these we can concentrate on our studies, especially during exam time, without having to worry as much about money. This award helps me financially, but it also makes me feel good to be recognized for my hard work and dedication to my studies.” — Jude Polsky, Architectural Technology ‘11 “Working on cars and building a career around cars is something I have wanted to do since I was a little kid, and now I will be able to fulfill that dream with the help of this scholarship. It will lessen the amount of student loans that I will have to take to pay for tuition and tools. Hopefully I will become successful enough so that one day I can donate to a scholarship and give other students the same opportunity that I was given.” — David Million, Automotive Service Technology ‘11 “Having two young children and attending school full time is not easy, but now I can breathe easier and not focus on worrying about money. This award has also given me the opportunity to demonstrate to my daughters that hard work and dedication pays off.” — Sigcwalisiwe Ntaka, Business Administration ‘11 “Entering the Diagnostic Medical Sonography field is a career change for me and it was a choice that was not easy to make. There were many issues to contemplate before making the decision. This award is a validation of that decision and is encouragement to strive for the constant improvement of oneself.” — Marina Choy, Diagnostic Medical Sonography ‘11 We often hear from our donors about the many reasons they give – to honour relatives, to support specific programs they feel passionately about and to leave legacies. But they all give to make a difference in a student’s life. They give because they want to help students achieve their dreams and be successful. Through the strong support of our donors, many of whom are SAIT alumni, the number of awards will continue to grow. Read on, apply and take advantage of $3.6 million in awards available to you as a SAIT student. 141629-COVER.indd 3 18/07/11 7:54 AM

  • 5. Student Awards Guide 2011-2012 3 Award Types SAIT offers more than 3,250 awards to its students, with most falling into one of the following four categories: Entrance, General, School—Nominated and Government. Entrance Entrance awards are designated for students who are beginning a new program. In some instances they are program-specific and in others, students in all programs may apply. The 2012—2013 Entrance awards will be available commencing November 2011 and will be open for application until May 2, 2012. In November, please visit Student Awards at sait.ca or look in the Entrance Awards Guide to see a listing of these awards. General General awards are undesignated awards that, in most circumstances, any student in any program may apply for if they meet the criteria outlined in this guide. School—Nominated Awards These awards are designed by the academic school and are program specific. Contact your Academic Chair for more information on applying online. SAIT awards take the form of bursaries, prizes or scholarships. Bursary — Financial need is the primary criteria used for selection, however, other criteria may also be included. Prize — Non-cash awards including such items as plaques, medals and prizes awarded for a specific accomplishment (academic or non—academic). Scholarship — Academic achievement is the primary selection criteria, however, other criteria may also be included such as financial need, community involvement, etc. Government Funded These awards are issued directly by the government. All details on these awards can be found by visiting alis.alberta.ca/scholarships. Award Criteria SAIT awards are given based in whole or in part on the following criteria: Academic Achievement — A pre—determined Grade Point Average (GPA). Financial Need — Financial need is determined by assessing a student’s income and expenses for the academic year. Students receiving student loans may still be considered in financial need. Community Involvement — Participation in community events, volunteer commitments with non—profits and/or charities, and involvement in extracurricular activities such as sports or church is important to include in your application. ** Some awards may include additional criteria as specified by the donor. Some examples may include your family status, your heritage or your chosen profession. Please read through the guide carefully to ensure that you meet all of the criteria and apply only for the awards for which you are eligible. 141629-TEXT.indd 3 18/07/11 8:00 AM
  • 6. 4 sait.ca General Information Who may apply? If you are enroled at SAIT as a continuous, full-time student or apprentice you may be eligible to apply. There are exceptions for part- time and distance learning students that are outlined in the guide, so please review the criteria carefully. I’m an international student — am I eligible? Yes, students who are citizens of countries other than Canada and who have been accepted at SAIT on a student visa are eligible for SAIT student awards. In order to collect the award however, an International student must have either a Social Insurance Number (SIN) or an Individual Tax Number (ITN). International students should contact the SAIT International Student Office for details and assistance. The office may also suggest other awards that are directed specifically to international students. If I win an award — how will I know? SAIT Alumni and Development will notify students selected for awards within four months of the application deadline. Recipients will receive an email, telephone call or written notification as to when the award may be obtained. How to Apply All applications can now only be accepted online at mySAIT.ca. Click on the myStudent tab and look under the Finance Information section for Scholarships and Awards. By typing in your student ID, only the awards you are eligible for based on your program will be viewable. One application form lists all the awards you are eligible for — simply check off the awards on the form. Apply anytime, anywhere. It’s that simple. application deadlines Apply online ahead of time! Please pay specific attention to deadlines for each unique award. Note that deadlines are firm and cannot be extended. Application Tips Read the Criteria Read the conditions for each award carefully. Please do not apply for an award if you do not meet the essential criteria. This will save you time in the essay section by eliminating essays that you do not have relevant information for. A Word About Your References Choose your references with care. Employers, religious leaders, community leaders, teachers and instructors can serve as excellent references. Ideally your references should have known you for a minimum of six months. Avoid using members of your family, best friends or roommates. Please advise your references of the award for which you are applying and inform them of the specific criteria of the award so that, if required, they may indicate why you are a suitable candidate. They should always try to address your current attributes and skills. Financial Information If you are applying for any awards that have financial need as a criteria, you must fill this section out. Please provide accurate information on monthly expenses and income. If you are unsure of exact amounts, please provide an estimate. Essays, Written Documentation, Specialty Criteria Please read these sections carefully and answer the questions as specifically as you can. It is best to provide as much detailed information as possible. Taxation of Scholarships and Bursaries The full amount of scholarships, fellowships, or bursaries are not taxable and are no longer reported as income on your tax return. The scholarships, fellowships, or bursaries must be received by you as a student with respect to your enrolment in a program that entitles you to claim the Education Amount (Form T2202, Education and Textbook Amounts Certificate). If you are not eligible for the education amount, report on line 130 only the amount that is more than $500. For Government funded awards, the T4As are issued by Alberta Advanced Education — Students Finance will show the tax amount of scholarships and bursaries in Box 28 — Other Income. Box 38, shows the footnote code as 05, which is for Scholarships/Bursaries. This amount should not be reported on your tax return, as long as you are eligible for the Education Amount (Form T2202, Education and Textbook Amounts Certificate).” If you are unsure of your tax status, contact the Canada Revenue Agency at: 1.800.959.8281 or cra.gc.ca. PLEASE NOTE: • All awards, amounts and numbers of awards, as listed in the guide, are subject to receipt of funding. In the event of program cancellation, awards will be reallocated to a program area designated by Alumni and Development. • If there is a discrepancy between the published award criteria or value and the official award documentation located in the Alumni and Development department, the official documentation is deemed accurate. Award criteria and values are subject to change. 141629-TEXT.indd 4 18/07/11 8:00 AM

Deadline: November 28 Elizabeth Steinburg Mom in a Non-Traditional Trade Elizabeth Steinburg was a high school math teacher for ten years before deciding to make a career change. She traded her classroom and chalkboard for the world of electrical motors, transformers and digital electronics. Steinburg enroled in SAIT’s Electrical Engineering Technology (EET) program. “A big part of the decision was that a lot of my fellow teachers were being laid off. I looked at the future of the teaching profession and realized it wasn’t going to get a lot better,” says Steinburg. “I’ve always followed a non-traditional path. I’m good at math and physics and I knew there was a lot of math and theory in the EET program. ” Deciding to come back to school wasn’t just a personal decision; it was a family decision. Steinburg has two young daughters at home. Steinburg knew her student loans weren’t going to provide enough family income, so she enlisted the help of the Student Awards Guide. “I have a very well marked catalogue of all the different scholarships,” says Steinburg. “For the rewards, it really isn’t that much work. I spent maybe an hour tops filling out the online forms. It’s important to me because I needed all the help I could get.” Steinburg’s work ethic and program choice made her the perfect candidate for the CN Scholarship for Women, an award that recognizes women in a non-traditional trade. She also received the Norman Bakken Memorial award, which is determined by the positive attitude of the applicant. Steinburg says that the awards provided “a little extra wiggle room for birthday presents and other family expenses. It’s nice to have that cushion that scholarships provide.” The big celebration will happen when Steinburg walks across the stage and graduates from Electrical Engineering Technology at SAIT in 2012. “The whole country is my oyster! First of all, I would really like to find a job in the industry. I’m also looking forward to being flexible with time and money again...it’s going to be really exciting!” 141629-TEXT.indd 10 18/07/11 8:00 AM

  • 17. Student Awards Guide 2011-2012 15 Xumei Chen Life Long Learner “When I came to Canada, I could not speak English very well so I worked labour jobs, which was very tough on the body, “ says Xumei Chen. “I had a workplace accident that injured my leg and I realized I had to go back to school and learn English.” Like many immigrants, Chen lacks English language skills but has a great deal of education. Chen holds a degree in Textile Engineering and a certificate in International Business from Chinese post-secondary institutions. When the textile industry took a downturn, Chen became a consultant helping foreign investors do business in China. After he was laid off in 1999, Chen applied to come to Canada as an independent immigrant ready to start a new life. Before Chen could enrol in a post-secondary program in Canada, he had the enormous task of learning English. He studied English as a Second Language at Chinook Learning Centre and after 16 months of classes he was able to enrol in SAIT’s Business Administration diploma program. Chen’s perseverance and dedication paid off when he was awarded the Hong Kong Canada Business Association award. “Winning the award was very encouraging for me because my hard work had been recognized,” says Chen. “My English isn’t fluent, and at my age, I must take more time to study to get good marks. It was very motivating and inspiring.” With a SAIT Polytechnic diploma added to his list of accomplishments, Chen is mapping his future with further education. His goals are to work part-time while completing a bachelor’s degree in finance and to open a small restaurant in China.
