2. THE PROMISE
Blue Abyss is among the most ground-breaking
projects of its time. Designed to support the
commercial diving, remote operated vehicle,
human spaceflight and human life science
sectors, Blue Abyss promises to be Europe’s
premier extreme environment research,
development and training facility.
This unique aquatic centre will house the
world’s largest and deepest indoor pool,
alongside: hyper and hypobaric chambers; the
Kuehnegger Human Performance Centre; a
micro-gravity simulation suspension suite for
replicating the effects of weightlessness and
hypo-gravity; amphitheatre and classrooms;
cafeteria and 120-bed hotel.

4. Blue Abyss is designed to cater for Space environment simulation
on one hand, and freediving on the other, with a huge variety of
applications in between.
Manufacturers can test whole Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV)
assemblies and researchers can evaluate new diving equipment
and the effects of prolonged periods of submersion on the body.
Commercial and recreational divers can conduct their training at
various depths, while freedivers can also test their mettle in the
50m deep shaft.

THE POSSIBILITIES
Blue Abyss is a truly pioneering project that will extend the
possibilities for education, commercial and scientific research,
development and training beyond anything that exists today.
Imagine the perfect training environment: a safe, highly
supervised indoor space available year-round, day and night. The
pool will have controls to mimic sea and lighting conditions and
the capacity to insert large training craft. It will house a 30-tonne
crane, tie-down points and lifting platforms, and offer roof access
for larger items. Its multiple depths allow for separate activities
to occur simultaneously, and high-definition cameras will capture
it all.
These facilities will enable the pool to be customised for a huge
range of uses and facilitate the most realistic testing, training and
operational exercises.
