September 23, 2015—Wilmington, NC— UNCW’s Media and Politics class invites the community to
join them on an exciting journey as the class of 23 students produces WingSpan a political TV show,
welcoming campus, city, county, state and community leaders each week to discuss timely and relevant
political topics.

WingSpan is an ETEAL sponsored project and part of an upper-level Communication Studies course.
Students are responsible for every aspect of the show - the show's naming and branding, topics, guests,
research, scripts, PR, social media and all aspects of production - under professor consultation and
guidance. This type of applied learning project provides students an authentic experience to enculturate
them in a civic engagement opportunity while also doing a service for the greater community.
“We are excited to be involved in an applied learning experience like this, from beginning to end,
capturing the energy, enthusiasm and critical thinking that makes the university so critical to our
community and our future,” says Dr. Jennifer Brubaker, Communication Studies Associate Professor and
WingSpan’s Executive Producer.

The goal of WingSpan is to provide constructive conversation on important issues in a supportive,
positive, and most importantly, non-partisan learning environment.

County Commissioner Rob Zapple, Wrightsville Beach Town Manager Tim Owens, Cape Fear
RiverKeeper Kemp Burdette, Coastal Federation Advocate Mike Giles, Professor Susanne Brander, and
environmental science professor Jenny Biddle join the class on UNCW’s campus on Wednesday,
September 23, to tape Episode 2 of the show, discussing the environmental issues in Wilmington.

Episode 2 will air online (www.UNCWingSpan.com) beginning Friday, September 25. Episodes will
also air each week on TLN on Mondays and Wednesdays at 6 p.m. Press inquiries may contact Dr.
Jennifer Brubaker (910-789-3525, brubakerj@uncw.edu) in the Communication Studies Department at
UNCW. Visual opportunities are available for the media.
