WHAT IS THE ISSUE?
Thousands of New Orleans renters are living in units
with unsafe and unhealthy physical conditions.
Renters are entitled to decent,
safe and healthy homes!
I was lucky to not have children
living in this situation and to be
able to come up with another security
deposit and move as quickly as I did.
I think most people don’t have that
privilege.
Renters in New
Orleans deserve
safe, healthy
homes.
New Orleans is a city of renters.
Thousands of renters are

unhealthy physical conditions.
HOW BIG IS THE
PROBLEM?
Approximately 49,000 private rent-
als needed major repairs in the last
12 months
units experienced WATER LEAKAGE
from the outside of the structure.
Landlords should have provide safe and operating:

I have rain that comes in my room when it rains hard and
there’s mold in there and mold underneath my sink.
I sent a letter to my landlord with regards to some of these
issues and he gave me a notice to vacate the next day.
And it’s just kinda sad having been here all these years, to
have a simple letter get me evicted over issues that could
just be fixed.

Units with safety and health violations often see high turnover rates as
renters leave when they realize landlords and code enforcement won’t
help. The result is that neighborhoods with substandard rental units
tend to have more transient residents. Research shows that crime is
often lower in neighborhoods where neighbors say they trust each
other and have shared expectations for appropriate behavior.

homeowner I worry that could happen to
the rental next door, it's in bad shape.

moved into a new apartment there was a
mandatory inspection by the City to make
sure the home was up to code.
The people next door got bedbugs and they
got sick, her babies’ backs were eaten up.

saying a word.

I reported to my landlord that I had
mold. My landlord sent someone over to
paint over the mold.
There were feces coming out [of the]
ceiling... I immediately thought it was a
water leakage, but found out later through
a plumber that it was feces and urine
coming from the upstairs plumbing which
never got fixed.

Rent is higher than it's ever been before. No one
should have to live in a home that makes them
sick. The city should make sure all apartments
meet basic health and safety standards.
