Lesson 1
MELC: Approximates the measures of quantities particularly length, weight/mass, volume,
time, angle and temperature rate (M7ME-IIa-3)
Objectives: 1. Define the different units of measurement
2. Identify the different units of measurement
3. Approximate measures of length, weight/mass, volume, time, angle, and
temperature rate
Let us try this activity.
Directions: Determine the dimension of the following using the
nonstandard units of measurement. Record your results in the
table below. Ask a family member to do the same and compare
your result.

Answer the following questions:
1. Did you experience any difficulty when you were doing the actual measuring?
_________________________________________________________________________________
2. Which measurement shows the same answer?
_________________________________________________________________________________
3. Were their any differences being big than being small when you use nonstandard
units of measurement? What do you think caused those differences?
_________________________________________________________________________________
4. Based from the activity, is there a need for a standardized measurement?

Did you enjoy the activity? Let’s learn more about approximation of measurement of
length, weight/mass, volume, time, angle, and temperature.
In real life, there are times when we do not need to give the exact measurement. We
just use approximation to find a number that is close to the correct measurement.
Measurement
Measurement is the method of making an inference by putting a possible end to its
feature like length, weight, volume, time, and even temperature rate. Measurements are
classified into two; Nonstandard units of measurement and Standard units of
measurement. Nonstandard units of measurement like palm, handspan, cubit, and other
body parts were used as tool in the 3rd century BC. This type of measurement is not
standard since the size of human body varies each person. Using these units of
measurement has a disadvantage since not everyone has the same size of body parts.
Standard units of measurement also classified into two types; English system like inch,
foot, and yard; and Metric system like meter, centimeter, and kilometer which used when
measuring the length, width, or thickness of objects. The metric system is the most
common system of measurement used in the world today since it is more convenient and
practical to use.
Meter (m) is the basic metric unit in measuring length. Some of the tools used in
measuring length are ruler, tape measure, and meter stick.
Gram (g) is the basic metric unit of weight/mass. Mass and weight are used
interchangeably although weight is the more popular term. Oftentimes in daily life, it is the
mass of the given object which is called its weight. However, in the scientific community,
mass and weight are two different measurements. Mass refers to the amount of matter an
object has while weight is the gravitational force acting on an object.
Volume is the amount of space occupied by an object. Capacity is the amount of
substance in a container. The common metric unit for volume is m3 or cm3. Liter (l) is the
basic metric unit for capacity.
Angle is defined as a figure formed when two rays share a common endpoint called
the vertex. Angles are measured either in degree or radian measures. A protractor is used
to determine the measure of an angle in degrees.
The concept of time is very basic and is integral in the discussion of other concepts
such as speed. Currently, there are two types of notation in stating time, the 12-hr notation
(standard time) or the 24-hr notation (military or astronomical time). Standard time makes
5. 3
use of a.m. and p.m. to distinguish between the time from 12midnight to 12 noon (a.m. or
ante meridiem) and from 12 noon to 12 midnight (p.m. or post meridiem).
Temperature is the measurement of the degree of hotness or coldness of an object or
substance. While the commonly used units are Celsius (C) for the Metric system and
Fahrenheit (F) for the English system.

Here are some objects that illustrate the units of length in metric system. Unit of
measurement used in measuring depends on the size of the object.
The average length of study
table is about 1 meter.
The average width of micro sd
card is about 1 centimeter.
The average thickness of
sewing machine needle is
about 1 millimeter.
Here are some objects that illustrate the units of weight in metric system. Unit of
measurement used in measuring depends on the weight of the object.
A cake can weigh about
500 grams.
One sack of rice is
50 kilograms.
A medicine capsule weighs
500 milligrams.
Here are some objects that illustrate the units of volume and capacity in metric
system. Unit of measurement used in measuring depends on the measurement volume and
capacity.
A standard measurement of a
square pool is 5 meters each
side.
A bottle of 250 ml of water One liter of Mango Juice
Here are some objects that illustrate the approximated units of angle.
The scissors open at
approximately 500.
A window corner is 900. Hand fan is about 1400.
6. 4
Here are some situations that illustrate the approximated standard time.
Waking up at 7:00 AM Enjoying a campfire at 8:00

temperature depends on the rate of hotness and coldness of an object.
Cooking at about 1000 C Toasting bread about 500 C of
heat
Ice cream with a
temperature of about -120
C
