Olympia was an important archaeological site in ancient Greece that hosted the first Olympic Games. It contained ruins dating back to the 4th millennium BC including pottery, settlements from the Bronze Age, and early representations of Zeus from 900-700 BC. During its peak from 776 BC to 394 BC, the Olympic Games were held every four years in Olympia and featured athletic competitions between Greek city-states, with a truce declared during the celebrations. Events included races, long jump, discus, javelin, fighting, boxing, wrestling, and horse and chariot races.
