3. Common good defined
All human beings have the capacity to develop and reach their full
potential. The conditions of the society where they belong should support and
help them fulfill those dreams. Take for example a young person who dreams
of becoming a doctor someday. He should have access to nutritious food,
appropriate shelter, and good quality education. He should have a safe and
healthy environment, have opportunities to practice his profession, and thus,
achieve his dream of curing the sick and promoting the well-being of people. In
realizing his full, as with others, is consequent to the practice of his society to
work for the common good. The Vatican II document Gaudium et Spes defines
the common good as "the sum total of social conditions which allow people,
either as groups or as individuals, to reach their fulfillment more fully and more
easily."

Are you familiar with the pageants that daytime variety shows
organize for children? The hosts ask the children what they would like
to become when they grow up and their reason for wanting so. The
usual answer is a profession (doctor, nurse, lawyer, teacher, fireman,
policeman, etc.) that to en would give them the opportunity to help
other people. Never mind that the answers were coached by their
elders; still, there is the certainty that such an answer would sway
votes in their favor. It gives credit to the child for thinking of the
common good. Doctors and nurses take care of the health of the
populace, lawyers defend people's rights, teachers educate children,
and firemen and policeman assure them of their security and safety.
5. Common good defined
Obviously, this is not the prime consideration of many adults. For
them, work is usually for personal gain, especially if their conditions are
miserable. However, to be successful in a job, one must love one's
work. Loving one's work entails service for others. Gaudium et Spes
tells us that "the common good is the good of all people and of the
whole person. The human person cannot find fulfillment in himself, that
is, apart from the fact that he exists ‘with’ others and 'for others" Since
human beings make up the society, and exist with others and for
others, the goal of society is the attainment of the common good.

Editor's Notes
All individuals possess the potential for growth and self-realization, requiring societal support to fulfill their aspirations. For instance, envision a young aspiring doctor who needs access to basic necessities like food, shelter, and quality education. A secure and wholesome environment, coupled with professional opportunities, enables him to achieve his dream of healing and contributing to the well-being of society. This pursuit of individual goals, mirrored by society's dedication to the common good, reflects the essence of Vatican II's concept of the common good as the culmination of conditions enabling people to flourish. While children often express altruistic aspirations, adults may prioritize personal gain, but genuine success necessitates a genuine love for one's work, encompassing service to others, in alignment with the idea that human fulfillment is intertwined with communal existence.
In families, maintaining the common good hinges on equality, cooperation, and mutual reliance. Parents bear the responsibility of supplying nourishment, education, and shelter to their children, aiming for equality. The family dynamic thrives on collaborative efforts, where each member contributes to the well-being of others, ensuring that individual choices resonate with the collective welfare (the health, happiness, and fortunes of a person or group).
Within the school, administrators, teachers, and students collectively foster the common good. Administrators ensure teachers have essential resources for effective teaching, while enforcing safety measures. Teachers guide students with rules that promote focus, cooperation, and the understanding that individual efforts contribute to the betterment of society.
Barangay officials and homeowners association officers work together to enhance the well-being of the community by maintaining security through regular patrols, ensuring proper waste management, street illumination, and waterway upkeep. Collaboration between residents and officials fosters a sense of shared responsibility, emphasizing the interconnectedness of households in shaping a positive living environment.
