SUMMARY
During my studies I have developed interests in several scientific fields at the
boarder of physics and chemistry. The subject that interests me most, and is
the guideline throughout my education, is working with spectroscopic methods. I
enjoy using different instruments and combining methodologies to achieve the de-
sired experimental results. Honesty, proactive, perseverance and helpfulness are a
few words that best describe my character and help work together in a team. From
a personal point of view, I have an active lifestyle and love to do sports in my spare
time.
EXPERIENCE
• Ph.D. project: Spectroscopy at the nanometer scale 2012 - 2016
Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam, The Netherlands
The project aimed to explore different methods to obtain optical information be-
yond the diffraction limit. An important part was the development of a new sensor
that combines atomic force microscopy with scanning near-field optical microscopy
in a small easy-to-use device. The program was a collaboration between two uni-
versity research groups and Philips Innovation Services. As the only Ph.D. stu-
dent involved, I was required to manage the project and work as an independent
researcher. I enjoyed working with a large variety of instruments ranging from mi-
croscopes and spectrometers to fabrication equipment such as laser ablation and
focused ion beam milling.
• MSc. research project: Chemical sensing using photonic crystal fibers 2010 - 2011
Queens University, Kinston, ON, Canada
Subject: Development of a fiber loop ring-down spectroscopy system incorporating
a hollow-core photonic crystal fiber for sensitive gas analysis.
EDUCATION
• Ph.D. in physics, Faculty of Sciences, Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam 2012 - 2016
Project: Spectroscopy at the nanometer scale.
Courses: BLTC Academic writing, Nanonext analytic storytelling, HRSMC pho-
tochemistry summeschool, Biophotonics and Imaging Graduate School (BIGSS),
HRSMC summerschool on advanced spectroscopy.

OTHER INTERESTS
Besides my scientific interests I love sports, in particular rowing, but also cycling and running. As
an athlete I went to the World-cup in Lucerne, Swiss in the lightweight mens eight in 2005 and 2006.
Later as a coach I joined the Junior World Championships. In 2009 I was a member of the board
of my students rowing club Skøll. In addition I participated in various other committees, including
organizing the largest international rowing event in the Netherlands, the Koninklijke HollandBeker
Regatta. I believe an active lifestyle aside from the professional duties is very important. Therefore,
nowadays I keep myself fit by running, cycling and speed-skating.
