The document provides instructions for properly writing a dietary pink slip for nursing home residents. It discusses:
1) The importance of following the slip down to the last detail, as mistakes could cause illness or death.
2) The first two steps are writing the resident's full name in the top left corner for identification, and noting the specific diet below the name.
3) Other required information includes any allergies, the amounts of food and liquid allowed, and examples of common diet types like pureed, ground, or regular diets.

How to Write a Pink Dietary Slip
I am writing my assignment on How to write a dietary slip! I have been in the food
industry for a very long time and recently started working in the dietary department at two
nursing facilities. It is very important that a dietary pink slip be followed down to the last detail.
When the slip is written there are what seems like guidelines that have to be followed
otherwise the patient and or nursing home resident could possibly have a problem, such as
becoming very ill.
In the business of nursing and rehabilitation not only do I have to follow the dietary pink
slip. The nurses also have to follow them word for word. It is important that what is written on
the card be neat written and eligible for all departments to follow in case of an emergency.
Making one mistake can cost me a life in places such as nursing homes or hospitals. A lot of
residents and people in general around the world have become very ill to poor care of
residents. It is very important that every staff member in the nursing department and in the
kitchen is aware of what each person has and what they can’t have.
2. 2
Many people in this world have allergies t p food that can possible end up killing them.
The gluten allergy is most common among all the allergies right now. A lot of restaurants now
have options for people who are gluten free and if they have any other allergies. When I receive
a dietary pink slip I immediately go over to the name of the resident that is usually hanging on
the wall in the kitchen and look to see if the name is spelled correctly so I don’t make the
accommodations for the wrong person.
In order to write a dietary pink slip you have to follow these steps I am listing now. Your
first step when writing a slip such as this one is written is to put the personsfirst and last
namein the top left corner. All throughout time these slips have been written this way in hopes
that they are easier to follow more than difficult. The name is veryimportant due to the
allergies Ihave mentioned before. The name of the person is also important because usually
there are seating charts in all different dining rooms in nursing homes where the resident may
get very angry if there seat is taken. Sometimes if the seat is taken the resident may through
food and get violent because their meal went to the wrong person and the wrong table. An
example of this is below.
3. 3
The second step in writing a dietary pink slip correctly is making sure that right below
the person’s name is the name if the diet that they are on and follow. Some of the residents can
be on very different diets and you have t0o make sure you give them the right one. It is not
often known for people dying when getting thee wrong meals because the cards are usually
followed correctly. Proper diets matter along with the type of diet.
For example, if you give a person who issupposed to be on a puree diet a sandwich, they
will most likely choke. This is due to a breathing tube in the person throat of the resident not
having teeth. Some people can’t swallow whole foods and that is when nurses need to make

sure they are paying really close attention to the slip that they write for the kitchen. Another
example is when food has to be chopped up for the resident. That is what we call ground food.
When food is ground it is the original food that is taken and ground in to little pieces for
better access in swallowing so they don’t choke. And then there is a regular diet and it
consists of food that can be eaten whole and swallowed with no trouble. Example
number 2 is below.
At the bottom of the slip, you have to submit in writing how many ounces of food that
resident can eat. The amount of liquid they are allowed to take in is also there written beside
the amount of food. As I have said above you always have to write the allergies that the

resident has. The importance to that is what could happen to them if you don’t follow their diet
and they could become very ill.
As you can see now, there are many complications that go along with having the
properly written dietary slip. If the slip is not written right or followed 100% it can be very
deadly to the health of the resident. It makes sense also to check with the nurse if you don’t
understand what the slip says or indicates. Each person is different when it comes to their body
and what they can and can’t eat. If you follow the guidelines correctly, you will save lives and
make people happy. And that is how you write a dietary pink slip, written by a future dietician
herself. The last example is below.
