6. WEYERHAEUSER HISTORY IN JAPAN
• WY relationship with Japan started after the Great Kanto
Earthquake in 1923 when we exported a large volume of timber
to help in the reconstruction.
• Weyerhaeuser’s Japan office was established in 1963 to support
the import of pulp (fiber used for paper production).
• In 1965, WY’s first west coast sourced log and lumber were
shipped to Japan; the export of wood chips to Japan was also
started in the same year.
• From 1976 to 1979, WY established a joint venture business,
Norpac (manufacturer of newsprint) with Jujo Paper Co (now
named Nippon Paper Industries Co) located in Longview,
Washington.
• In 1981 Weyerhaeuser Japan started the first dimension lumber
exports to Japan for homebuilding.
