This document provides biographical information about Daniel Defoe and analyzes his novel Robinson Crusoe. It notes that Defoe was born in 1659/1660 in England and died in 1731. By occupation, he was a writer, journalist, and merchant. His most famous work was Robinson Crusoe, published in 1719. The document then discusses some of Defoe's other writings and provides a brief summary of the plot of Robinson Crusoe. It analyzes how Crusoe establishes himself as the powerful ruler of the island and "king" through taming Friday and establishing Christian symbols, showing how Defoe used the novel to explore ideas about power, domination of nature, and religion.
Robinson Crusoe tells the story of a young man named Robinson Crusoe who defies his father's wishes and leaves for a life at sea. After many adventures, a storm leaves him shipwrecked as the sole survivor on an uninhabited island, where he spends many years in isolation before encountering others. Through his solitary experiences, Crusoe comes to appreciate the wisdom of living a moderate life and gains spiritual insight into his situation.
This summary provides the key details and events from the document:
Robinson Crusoe spent 27 years as the sole survivor on an island after being shipwrecked. During this time, he encountered signs of other humans like bones on the beach but never saw anyone. He eventually rescued and befriended Friday, teaching him English and Christianity. After several more years and encounters with other people, including the arrival of English sailors, Robinson and Friday left the island on an English ship after Robinson had been away for 35 years.

Assessment and Planning in Educational technology.pptxKavitha Krishnan
In an education system, it is understood that assessment is only for the students, but on the other hand, the Assessment of teachers is also an important aspect of the education system that ensures teachers are providing high-quality instruction to students. The assessment process can be used to provide feedback and support for professional development, to inform decisions about teacher retention or promotion, or to evaluate teacher effectiveness for accountability purposes.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

3. What is a “Travelogue”?
-> Travel Book, Travel Guide, Travel account and Travel
Record all these can all be called travel writing. Some of these
have relation more to history than to literature, since history
in the past is sometimes culled from the explorer’s and
traveller’s records. They are extremely valuable in spite of
their not having high literary values.
->Though these are called books and so literature, what
makes a literary work is the unfolding or the revelation of the
writer’s feelings, personality, imaginativeness and fine turns
of expression, to describe some qualities essential for literary
compositions.
4. Robinson Crusoe as a
‘Travelogue’
-> Robinson Crusoe is a novel which we can
call “Travelogue”. It is about journey of
Robinson Crusoe to an island where he stays
for twenty eight(28) years. He found the
people who were not civilised.
-> He wishes for a husband there who can
help him doing things there. He saw a negro
boy and decided to keep that boy with him.
-> Later on that boy was named as ‘Friday’
by Robinson Crusoe.
5. Robinson Crusoe’s Journey
-> Encouraged by his father to study law,
Crusoe expresses his wish to go to sea
instead.
-> Crusoe didn’t want to disobey his father but
he couldn’t follow his order. So, he ran away
and set on a sea voyage with his friend.
-> The second voyage does not prove as
fortunate: the ship is seized by Moorish
pirates, and Crusoe is enslaved to a potentate
in the North African town of Sallee.
6. -> He and a slave boy broke free and sailed down
the African coast. A Portuguese captain picks them
up, buys the slave boy from Crusoe and takes Crusoe
to Brazil.
-> In Brazil, Crusoe establishes himself as a
plantation owner. Eager for slave labour, he
embarks on a slave-gathering expedition to West
Africa but ends up shipwrecked off of the coast of
Trinidad.
-> Crusoe soon learns he is the sole survivor of the
expedition and seeks shelter and food for himself.
He returns to the wreck’s remains with salvage guns,
powder, food, and other items.
-> Onshore, he finds goats he can graze for meat and
builds a shelter for himself. He erects a cross with the
date of his arrival, September 1, 1659.
7. -> He finds a pleasant valley abounding in grapes,
builds a shady retreat. Crusoe describes himself as its
“king.” He trains a parrot, takes a goat as a pet, and
develops skills in basket weaving, bread making,
and pottery.
-> He cuts a cedar tree and builds a huge canoe from
its trunk, but discovers that he cannot move it to the
sea.
-> Builds a smaller boat, he rows around the island
but nearly perishes by a powerful current. Reaching
shore, he hears his parrot calling his name and is
thankful for being saved once again.
8. Master-Slave Relation
-> One day Crusoe is shocked to discover a man’s
footprint on the beach. He first assumes the
footprint is the devil’s, then decides it must belong
to one of the cannibals said to live in the region.
-> One evening he hears gunshots, and the next day
he is able to see a ship wrecked on his coast. It is
empty when he arrives on the scene to investigate.
-> Later Crusoe catches sight of thirty cannibals
heading for shore with their victims. One of the
victims is killed. Another one, breaks free and runs
toward Crusoe’s and Crusoe saves him.
9.
10. -> The victim vows total submission to Crusoe in
gratitude for his liberation. Crusoe names him Friday,
to commemorate the day on which his life was
saved, and takes him as his servant.
-> Finding Friday cheerful and intelligent, Crusoe
teaches him some English words and some
elementary Christian concepts.
-> Crusoe’s teaches him the first English word which
is “Master”. And Friday also learns it and calls
Crusoe as “Master”.
-> The two build a boat to visit the cannibals’ land
together. Before leaving, they are surprised by the
arrival of cannibals. Friday and Crusoe release a
European, a Spaniard. Friday is overjoyed one of the
rescued victims is his father.
11. -> Eight days later, the sight of an approaching
English ship alarms Friday. Crusoe is suspicious.
->Nine of the men explore the land, leaving two to
guard the captives. Friday and Crusoe overpower
these men and release the captives, one of whom is
the captain of the ship, which has been taken in a
mutiny.
-> Eventually they confront the mutineers, telling
them that all may escape with their lives except the
ringleader. The men surrendered.
-> Keeping five men as hostages, Crusoe sends the
other men out to seize the ship. When the ship is
brought in, Crusoe nearly faints.
12. -> On December 19, 1686, Crusoe boards the ship to return to
England. There, he finds his family is deceased except for
two sisters. His widow friend has kept Crusoe’s money
safe.
-> After travelling to Lisbon, Crusoe learns from the
Portuguese captain that his plantations in Brazil have been
highly profitable. He arranges to sell his Brazilian lands.
-> Finally arriving back in England, Crusoe receives word
that the sale of his plantations has been completed and that
he has made a considerable fortune. After donating a
portion to the widow and his sisters.
-> He marries, and his wife dies. He revisits his island,
finding that the Spaniards are governing it well and that it
has become a prosperous colony.
