It’s been 20 years since the announcement that Mercedes-Benz would come to Alabama
to build its first passenger-vehicle plant in the United States. Today, our 3,000 Team Members
at our Tuscaloosa plant are arguably the best in the business. Our Team Members have
built more than 1.8 million M-Class, GL-Class, and R-Class SUVs. And they’ve been instru-
mental in helping our plant win more than 60 highly coveted awards.
Alabama has been everything we hoped for in a partner, and more. Today, following
multiple expansions and more than $2 billion in plant investments, plans are underway to
bring production of the next-generation C-Class to Tuscaloosa in 2014, as well as an all-
new vehicle in 2015. It’s been a great ride – and a great partnership with the State of
Alabama – but we’ve only just begun.

Business is constantly changing. So continuing to do things the same old way can lead to trouble. That’s why
partnering with a metals service center that anticipates and adapts to change can be a real advantage. Since
1921, O’Neal has strived to stay a step ahead. To help you recognize opportunity and grab it before it’s gone. So while we

metal you’ll ever need, we can also shed light on how to reduce your costs,
improve productivity, and efficiently manage your inventory. Call us today and

been intensely focused on customer service and value. So while some might

IT’S THE BIGGEST SINGLE
DEVELOPMENT IN THE HISTORY
OF HEALTHCARE
IN SHELBY COUNTY.
We´re Building On 50 Years
Of Faith And Devoted Service.
The year was 1959. One hundred forty-one years after an
act of the Alabama Territorial General Assembly created
Shelby County. That’s how long it took for the development
of the county’s first and only hospital to come about –
ultimately through funding from the Hill-Burton Act
sponsored by Alabama Senator Lister Hill.
Now, 50 years later, Shelby County has become
the fastest growing county in the state. And that same
hospital, originally known as Shelby Memorial, has grown
right along with the community it was founded to serve.
Today, that hospital is Shelby Baptist Medical Center.
From the original 35-bed, two-story building located
in a field in Alabaster alongside the two-lane Montgomery
Highway, Shelby Baptist has evolved to become a highly
advanced 192-bed acute care facility. Its comprehensive
range of clinical services now includes cardiology,
obstetrics/gynecology, emergency services, orthopedics,
neurology, urology, and gastroenterology, as well as
specialized medical and surgical care. The hospital has
also become one of the largest employers in the county
with a staff of nearly 1,000 individuals dedicated to our
faith-based approach to healing and caring.
As we move forward into the next 50 years, we’ll
continue to focus our efforts on providing the best of
care to the people of our surrounding communities.
We Were Founded
To Serve A Growing
Community, And
We´re Continuing
The Tradition.

The Beginning Of A N
Building on faith, a dedicated staff, and 50 years of
devoted service, Shelby Baptist Medical Center has
now completed its new South Tower, featuring 101
new private rooms, including a new Medical Intensive
Care Unit. This historic $92-million investment
combines the latest technology, patient comforts,
and family-friendly conveniences in the area’s
most modern healthcare facility. This is the end
of semi-private rooms and the beginning of a new
era in healthcare for our surrounding communities.
As the primary source of comprehensive healthcare to
the people of Shelby County, Shelby Baptist Medical
Center strives to constantly enhance and expand the
services we provide our patients. After more than two
years of intricate planning and construction, the new
South Tower is the latest symbol of our unwavering
commitment to the community.

to adjust the amount of natural light in each room.
Flooring and cabinetry are finished in natural wood
tones. And artwork consisting of nature photography
hangs in all the rooms and throughout the facility.
There is, by design, a strong connection to the
outdoors built into the South Tower through themes
of nature, water, and light. From large windows with
panoramic views to graphic patterns on corridor walls
and frosted glass doors, there are subtle suggestions
that help you “think outside the hospital” and be
reminded of the beauty of the world.
And, in keeping with Shelby Baptist’s faith-based
mission, well-known scriptures are etched into the walls
in several prominent areas, while water features at the
street-level entrance and in the South Tower’s chapel
convey a message of purity and hope.
We believe that, in addition to its clinical attributes, a
hospital’s appearance and atmosphere play an important
role in the healing process. That’s why the design of Shelby
Baptist’s South Tower is decidedly non-institutional. It
looks and feels more like a home or hotel environment
– calming, comfortable, and inviting – which helps
relax patients and encourage visitation. From the warm
materials and soft lighting to the concealed medical
instruments in patient rooms and wireless internet access
throughout the building, the South Tower’s design features
give everyone a lot to feel good about.
The new patient rooms are not only private but
spacious and family-friendly. Each room features a desk/
workspace with shelving and comfortable visitor seating
that converts to a sleeper for overnight stays. Ambient
lighting is variable, and dual window shades allow you

Us Your Friendly, Neighbo
With an outstanding medical
staff, facilities, and services
right in your own back yard, the
recently expanded Women’s
Center at Shelby Baptist makes
having your baby close to home
an easy choice.
Shelby Baptist´s all-new
Emergency Department
treats about 44,000 cases
a year, making it one of
the busiest in Alabama.
It features all-private
exam rooms, seven
trauma bays, a large
triage area and waiting
room, and a dedicated
family consultation area.
Our cardiology suite
recently grew from
2,400 to 17,565 square
feet and includes a
14-bed Cardiovascular
Unit, three heart
catheterization labs,
family consult rooms,
and work spaces
for doctors.
Technology seems to turn on a dime these days. But Shelby
Baptist is committed to staying on the leading edge of new
developments that enhance our ability to diagnose and
treat patients with greater precision, speed, and comfort.
An excellent example is the Dual Source CT. Shelby Baptist
was home to the very first of these amazing devices in the
state of Alabama.
With far more detail, less radiation, the ability to
capture images in less than half the time, and a “shutter
speed” that’s twice as fast as other CT scanners, the
Dual Source CT gives our doctors more of the vital
information they need for accurate diagnoses and
treatment. It’s changing the way we look at everything
from coronary disease and kidney stones to tumors
and tendonitis.
Especially valuable in diagnosing heart problems,
the Dual Source CT allows our cardiologists to visualize
coronary arteries and plaque with a high degree of
accuracy in a non-invasive procedure, without
catheterization and many times without the use of Beta
blockers, which many people cannot tolerate.
The Dual Source CT complements Shelby Baptist’s
many other forms of advanced diagnostic imaging,
including our 3T MRI with TIM (Total Imaging Matrix),
a whole-body MRI that offers superior image resolution
and improved patient comfort.
Shelby County is a great place to start a new life. And if
you’re starting a family, the recently expanded Women’s
Center at Shelby Baptist Medical Center can make the
experience even better.
As one of the area’s most modern and comfortable
healthcare facilities, we deliver all the skill, technology,
and compassionate, faith-based care you expect in the
experience of a lifetime. Our Women’s Center now
includes a total of 14 spacious birthing rooms, featuring
cherry furniture, tasteful artwork, and gleaming tile
bathrooms. And as part of the expansion, our well
baby nursery, nursing stations, and waiting area have
all been re-designed.
In addition, the Shelby Baptist Women’s Center offers
supporting women’s services such as prenatal education
classes, including prenatal aquatics at the Shelby YMCA,
lactation consultants, and a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
for newborns with special medical needs.
With the quality care and facilities available right
here – only minutes from
wherever you are in Shelby
County – it just makes
sense to have your baby
close to home.

Another recent development at Shelby Baptist that’s changing
surgery for the better in many cases is our acquisition of the
world-renowned daVinci Robotic Surgical System.
Making surgery more precise and less invasive is what
robotic technology at Shelby Baptist is all about. Now, with
the assistance of the daVinci robot, our surgeons’ hand
movements are scaled, filtered, and translated by
micro-instruments that perform procedures in ways that far
exceed traditional human capabilities. As a result, many
heart, prostate, and gynecological patients may experience
outcomes with less pain, less blood loss, less scarring, less
risk of infection, a shorter hospital stay, and faster recovery.
One of the primary applications of robotic surgery is
in the treatment of prostate cancer. In cases requiring the
removal of the prostate gland, the traditional method of
invasive surgery requires an incision of eight to 10 inches in
length. With the daVinci system, however, the same surgery
is performed through tiny surgical openings. The result is
greater clarity and precision during surgery for physicians
and a less invasive procedure that may produce a better
outcome for patients.

  • 13. IT’S THE BIGGEST SINGLE DEVELOPMENT IN THE HISTORY OF HEALTHCARE IN SHELBY COUNTY. We´re Building On 50 Years Of Faith And Devoted Service. The year was 1959. One hundred forty-one years after an act of the Alabama Territorial General Assembly created Shelby County. That’s how long it took for the development of the county’s first and only hospital to come about – ultimately through funding from the Hill-Burton Act sponsored by Alabama Senator Lister Hill. Now, 50 years later, Shelby County has become the fastest growing county in the state. And that same hospital, originally known as Shelby Memorial, has grown right along with the community it was founded to serve. Today, that hospital is Shelby Baptist Medical Center. From the original 35-bed, two-story building located in a field in Alabaster alongside the two-lane Montgomery Highway, Shelby Baptist has evolved to become a highly advanced 192-bed acute care facility. Its comprehensive range of clinical services now includes cardiology, obstetrics/gynecology, emergency services, orthopedics, neurology, urology, and gastroenterology, as well as specialized medical and surgical care. The hospital has also become one of the largest employers in the county with a staff of nearly 1,000 individuals dedicated to our faith-based approach to healing and caring. As we move forward into the next 50 years, we’ll continue to focus our efforts on providing the best of care to the people of our surrounding communities. We Were Founded To Serve A Growing Community, And We´re Continuing The Tradition. And artwork consisting of nature photography hangs in all the rooms and throughout the facility. There is, by design, a strong connection to the outdoors built into the South Tower through themes of nature, water, and light. From large windows with panoramic views to graphic patterns on corridor walls and frosted glass doors, there are subtle suggestions that help you “think outside the hospital” and be reminded of the beauty of the world. And, in keeping with Shelby Baptist’s faith-based mission, well-known scriptures are etched into the walls in several prominent areas, while water features at the street-level entrance and in the South Tower’s chapel convey a message of purity and hope. We believe that, in addition to its clinical attributes, a hospital’s appearance and atmosphere play an important role in the healing process. That’s why the design of Shelby Baptist’s South Tower is decidedly non-institutional. It looks and feels more like a home or hotel environment – calming, comfortable, and inviting – which helps relax patients and encourage visitation. From the warm materials and soft lighting to the concealed medical instruments in patient rooms and wireless internet access throughout the building, the South Tower’s design features give everyone a lot to feel good about. The new patient rooms are not only private but spacious and family-friendly. Each room features a desk/ workspace with shelving and comfortable visitor seating that converts to a sleeper for overnight stays. • 16. e Last Four Years Has Made rhood, High-Tech Hospital. $150 Million Invested In Th Us Your Friendly, Neighbo With an outstanding medical staff, facilities, and services right in your own back yard, the recently expanded Women’s Center at Shelby Baptist makes having your baby close to home an easy choice. Shelby Baptist´s all-new Emergency Department treats about 44,000 cases a year, making it one of the busiest in Alabama. It features all-private exam rooms, seven trauma bays, a large triage area and waiting room, and a dedicated family consultation area. Our cardiology suite recently grew from 2,400 to 17,565 square feet and includes a 14-bed Cardiovascular Unit, three heart catheterization labs, family consult rooms, and work spaces for doctors. Technology seems to turn on a dime these days. But Shelby Baptist is committed to staying on the leading edge of new developments that enhance our ability to diagnose and treat patients with greater precision, speed, and comfort. An excellent example is the Dual Source CT. Shelby Baptist was home to the very first of these amazing devices in the state of Alabama. With far more detail, less radiation, the ability to capture images in less than half the time, and a “shutter speed” that’s twice as fast as other CT scanners, the Dual Source CT gives our doctors more of the vital information they need for accurate diagnoses and treatment. It’s changing the way we look at everything from coronary disease and kidney stones to tumors and tendonitis. Especially valuable in diagnosing heart problems, the Dual Source CT allows our cardiologists to visualize coronary arteries and plaque with a high degree of accuracy in a non-invasive procedure, without catheterization and many times without the use of Beta blockers, which many people cannot tolerate. The Dual Source CT complements Shelby Baptist’s many other forms of advanced diagnostic imaging, including our 3T MRI with TIM (Total Imaging Matrix), a whole-body MRI that offers superior image resolution and improved patient comfort. Shelby County is a great place to start a new life. And if you’re starting a family, the recently expanded Women’s Center at Shelby Baptist Medical Center can make the experience even better. As one of the area’s most modern and comfortable healthcare facilities, we deliver all the skill, technology, and compassionate, faith-based care you expect in the experience of a lifetime. Our Women’s Center now includes a total of 14 spacious birthing rooms, featuring cherry furniture, tasteful artwork, and gleaming tile bathrooms. And as part of the expansion, our well baby nursery, nursing stations, and waiting area have all been re-designed. In addition, the Shelby Baptist Women’s Center offers supporting women’s services such as prenatal education classes, including prenatal aquatics at the Shelby YMCA, lactation consultants, and a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit for newborns with special medical needs. With the quality care and facilities available right here – only minutes from wherever you are in Shelby County – it just makes sense to have your baby close to home. For help in finding a doctor or to learn more about our programs for expectant parents, please call 1-877-2BAPTIST or visit www.bhsala.com. Another recent development at Shelby Baptist that’s changing surgery for the better in many cases is our acquisition of the world-renowned daVinci Robotic Surgical System. Making surgery more precise and less invasive is what robotic technology at Shelby Baptist is all about. Now, with the assistance of the daVinci robot, our surgeons’ hand movements are scaled, filtered, and translated by micro-instruments that perform procedures in ways that far exceed traditional human capabilities. As a result, many heart, prostate, and gynecological patients may experience outcomes with less pain, less blood loss, less scarring, less risk of infection, a shorter hospital stay, and faster recovery. One of the primary applications of robotic surgery is in the treatment of prostate cancer. In cases requiring the removal of the prostate gland, the traditional method of invasive surgery requires an incision of eight to 10 inches in length. With the daVinci system, however, the same surgery is performed through tiny surgical openings. The result is greater clarity and precision during surgery for physicians and a less invasive procedure that may produce a better outcome for patients.
