Implanting driving security rules is one of the main aims en
europe to reduce the number of car accidents and to
ensure a better and safer driving.
In the case of Spain, there are rules in common with the
rest of the EU countries, but also specific legislation when
talking about limits, sanctions and fines.
Here you are some information that must be known if
you’re going to be driving in Spain.
3. Speed limits
Speed is limited for every type of road and those limits are signposted.
In Spain and for cars and motorbikes:
• Motorways and Autovías: 120km/h
• Standard roads: 100 km/h
• Other standard roads: 90 km/h
• Built-Up Areas: 50 km/h
Sanctions and fines can be between 100€ and 600€, sometimes
including even the loss of licence.
4. Alcohol intake
Alcohol consumption is controlled and it is sanctioned in Spanish
legislation when:
• Alcohol level is ≥0,25 mg/l and <0,50 mg/l. This entails a fine of
500€ (1000€ when recidivism) and 4 driving points
• Alcohol level is is ≥0,51 mg/l and <0,60 mg/l may lead to fines of
1000€ and the loss of 6 points.
• If alcohol level is ≥0,61 mg/l, there’s risk of prison sentence

The use of phones, mobiles and smartphones with your hands while
driving is not allowed, and this includes:
• Talking
• Writing messages
• Watching maps navigator
• Any other task that may distract from driving
Fines can be up to 200€

7. Reflective vest and emergency triangles
In Spain is mandatory to have at least one reflective vest on
board to use it in case of accident or break down.
It is also mandatory to use an emergency triangle to signpost an
emergency and a stopepd car on the road to other car drivers.
Not having and using these elements may carry sanctions and
fines up to 200€
8. Fines
Here in Spain, if fines that are notified in the moment are payed
immediately, the amount of the payment is reduced by 50%.
But also, if you don’t agree with a sanction or a fine imposed
there’s the possibility to request an appeal.
