Strategic Negotiation

Assess the Situation
- Define and Understand the importance
- Understanding relationships are key
- Know the importance of the outcome before negotiating
- Always consider emotions and fairness
Gather Data
- Have a good knowledge of the players and positions within the negotiation
- Understanding the deal structure
- What objective criteria exists?
- What are the assumptions?
- When does the deal need to be done?
- What could make this deal better?
- Be on the lookout for unfair anchors that are making unfair deals
Make A Deal
- Understand and define your goals
- Give away deals too early, it is simple to say “let's come back to this later”
- If you are being pushed too quick to make a deal you can use the Invisible Man
Technique. This is where you can buy yourself some time by saying “I have to
discuss this with my colleagues before giving you an answer”
Measure and Adjust
- Know what is happening the entire negotiation
- Track similarities and compromises
- It is ok to change your approach during the negotiation, you don't have to stick to
the same thing
- Always consider that this current negotiation will impact future negotiations and
adjust to it
Avoid Pitfalls
- Not knowing the players or process
- Not knowing what's important to you or the others
- Improper anchors
- Burning relationships
