Great White sharks are pretty mysterious, actually. We don't know that much about them, which makes it okay to create some fictional figures mixed with fact in order to generate quirky reading material. Winning!
How much does the tooth fairy owe a Great White shark?
1. HOW MUCH DOES THE TOOTH FAIRY OWE A
TYPICAL GREAT WHITE SHARK?
If there was a tooth fairy for sharks, how much would she owe each great white
shark?

2. THE TOOTH FAIRY
We mere humans only grow to
have 32 teeth, many of which can
get lost along the way
For every one of the twenty baby
teeth that fell out we would
ordinarily receive some short
change hidden under our pillow
or within a shoe – whatever the
case, the tooth fairy made sure
we got paid!
White sharks have up to 3 000
teeth compiled in five to seven
rows and only 24 of those are
typically exposed. Now imagine a
great white shark was
recompensed by the tooth fairy
for every tooth lost.
3. HOW MANY TEETH DOES A WHITE SHARK
LOSE IN ITS LIFETIME?
This is a difficult question, but if
we’re going to attempt to figure it
out we’re going to need numbers,
and a formula of sorts. So these are
the facts:
Sharks have 5 rows of teeth
24 exposed teeth
Up to 3 000 teeth at any given
time
Adult white sharks can grow to
the age of 30 and reach maturity
at the age of 15
4. LET’S CRUNCH THE NUMBERS
Rate of tooth loss X average life span = number of teeth within a lifetime
5. SO, USING THE FORMULA GENERATED…
24 teeth per
year X 25 years
of age = 600
teeth in a
lifetime!
Determining the rate of tooth loss is
difficult because as their teeth fall out,
they are rapidly replaced by the teeth in
the row behind the lost tooth.
So let’s assume that 24 teeth are lost
annually. Additionally, let’s assume
that the average age a white shark lives
til is 25 – there’s no accurate figure for
average age, but these sharks are
known to live up to the age of 30.
6. A GREAT WHITE SHARK LOSES 600 TEETH
IN ITS LIFETIME, HUH?
So how much money is owed?
American children receive, on
average, $2.60 per tooth.
Convert that to ZAR and the
local tooth fairy would owe
R26.40 per tooth for the sharks
swimming in Shark Alley, which
sums up to a whopping R15 840
per shark!
7. THE TOOTH FAIRY HAS A LOT OF
OWED MONIES TO ACCOUNT FOR!
