Fall Trends
While we are certainly sad to see the summer season go, we can’t help but be excited for the change that fall
brings. There’s just something about the transition from summer to fall that’s invigorating to the spirit. Rather
than dreading the cold months ahead, let’s take some time to embrace the coming fall colors and styles with a
sneak peek of our upcoming fall clothing and home décor trends!
Keep checking back on AmazingGoodwill.com, for the full article to go live, when the
fall season hits at the end of September!

intrigued with this trend!

You really can’t go wrong
with a good dose of
tartan in the fall season.
Going for the standard red look
is not only trending this year,
but is also a great way to add
a pop of color to fall’s neutrals.
We’re not talking
the typical beige or
black tights; think
of color, texture and
fun prints. Fall has
a pair of tights for
every personality.
And they pair well
with a variety of
outfits – bonus!
We went from small and minimal
during the summer, to big and sparkly
this fall! We’re lovin’ the bold statement
made by jewelry this season.

Collections on Display
Trays
At Goodwill, we love collections;
our stores are full of great items for
gatherers of all sorts, from vases
and tea cups, to wall art and accent
pillows! Lucky for us, fall is all about
putting these collections front and
center. We love that displaying
collections gives a curated look (also
trending for fall!), and it’s so easy to
pull off.
Trays are perfect for those of us who
want to display various items, but want
an organized look
too. Trays slowly
made their way
into home décor
this summer, but
for fall, you’ll see
them everywhere!
With a variety
of shapes, colors
and sizes, this
trend is one we
can all pull off!
Ultramarine Accents
Each season, we look for that shade of color
that is popping up everywhere in the home
décor world. Ultramarine dove right in to
fall, and rightly so; it’s glossy, vibrant and just
so stunning! Look for this great hue in home
décor accessories and paint colors.
While the fashion world is
avoiding neutrals this fall, home
décor is craving them! Neutrals
are being seen as fresh rather than
dull. All you need is texture and
shape to bring them to life!

This affordable, tasty dish
combines the classic fall
flavor of sweet potatoes
with a mexican twist!
Chorizo Sweet
Potato Skillet
(from budgetbytes.com)
Prep: 10 min
Cook: 45 min
Serves: 6
Ingredients
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 medium (1 lb.) sweet potato
1/2 lb. mexican chorizo
1 (15 oz.) can black beans
1 cup uncooked long grain white rice
1 cup green or red salsa
1 3/4 cup chicken broth
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
2-3 green onions, sliced
Peel and dice the sweet potato into 1/2 to 3/4 inch cubes. Size matters – make them small. Sauté
the sweet potato cubes into a large skillet with olive oil over medium heat for about 5 minutes
or until the sweet potatoes have softened about halfway through (they’ll cook more later).
Squeeze the chorizo out of its casing into the skillet with the sweet potatoes. Sauté the chorizo
and sweet potatoes together, breaking the chorizo up into small pieces as it browns.
Once the chorizo fully browns, pour off any excess grease. Rinse and drain the back beans. Add
the beans, salsa and uncooked rice to the skillet. Stir them into the sweet potatoes and chorizo
until everything is well combined.
Add the chicken broth, stir briefly, then place a lid on the skillet. Allow the contents of the
skillet to come up to a boil, then turn the heat down to low. Let the skillet simmer on low for 30
minutes. Make sure it is simmering the whole time (you should be able to hear it quietly simmer
away). If it’s not, turn up the heat slightly.
After 30 minutes the rice should be tender and have absorbed all of the liquid. Turn off the heat,
fluff the mixture, sprinkle the cheese on top, then retun the lid to trap the residual
heat and help the cheese melt.
Sprinkle the chopped onions on
top, serve and enjoy!

Roasted Pumpkin Seeds
We love carving pumpkins in our house each fall. They are always unique and fun,
and we love letting our boys draw their designs and see their creativity shine. We also
LOVE pumpkin seeds! Everyone seems to have their own way of roasting, but here is
our tried and true method that never fails.
Fill your sink or a large bowl with water. Seed
your pumpkin, removing all pulp and flesh from
the seeds and place them in the water. The water
will help you remove any residual pulp.
Then – and this is the secret to great pumpkin
seeds – transfer your seeds to a large storage
container, and fill it with three tablespoons of
salt and a gallon of water.
Close the lid and place in your refrigerator for at
least 24 hours, shaking the container a couple of
times to mix the seeds.
Preheat the oven to 250 degrees. Place one
generous tablespoon of olive oil on a rimmed
baking sheet, then spread an even layer of seeds
on the sheet. Depending on how many seeds your
pumpkins yield and how big your baking sheet is,
you may need more than one sheet. Add salt to
taste and mix the seeds, salt and oil together
to coat.
Now add your spices. Our standby is Penzey’s
Mural of Flavor, the mix gives the seeds a unique
and delicious flavor. We usually do a large pan
of those, and then I do smaller pans with
interesting mixes.
By Kyla Mrazek, Marketing Projects Manager
Bake your seeds for 1 hour at 250 degrees. Stir the seeds and put
them back in the oven for another 30 to 60 minutes, testing for
doneness throughout. Unlike store bought seeds that are pure
white, these should be roasted until they turn a golden brown,
which enhances their flavor.
Stored in an airtight container, the seeds will be good for 3 to 4
weeks. If they last that long!

As the summer winds down and fall approaches in the wink of an eye,
the changes in fashion also must keep pace with the fluctuations of the thermometer.
That means having items in your wardrobe that can segue from the hot and humid last gasps of summer
in September, all the way to the inevitable winter of November. I’m going to show you how a few items
of clothing, foundation pieces, that can create looks to work through this transitional time of year.
I decided that denim, the workhorse of fashion, is what should be featured on these
pages. It is our foundation piece for all of these looks. Denim is the great equalizer.
Everyone can wear denim in one way or another, but for our purposes I focused
on a fantastic denim jumper by Aqua Blues found at one of our stores for $5.99. It
was made of 95% cotton denim with 5% spandex for some stretch. The dark blue
indigo color looked fresh and it also had topstitching and some darting to help
create a nice fit. These are details that will make any garment more versatile in
your wardrobe.
Found at Goodwill for $5.99!
Fall FashionTriple Play!
By: Fashion Expert, Bjorn Nasett
Typically September temps can still flirt near 80 degrees so we wanted
to maintain a summerly feel. Our first look features our jumper plus
some statement jewelry in metallic gold with multicolor stones. The
long dangle earrings and chain link belt added some drama and a bit
of southwestern flair. Our model just needed some cool sandals to
complete the look! This is perfect for a Labor Day picnic or any other
pursuit that requires more than just jeans and a tank top.

As the temperatures begin to drop we need to add on to our ensemble to
keep warm! For our second look we layered on a slouchy muted floral
print cardigan, added a great denim belt that was wide and helped define
the waistline, and used a floral scarf as a headband. The floral softens the
look of the denim and the soft shape of the cardigan is a nice play off of the
clean lines of the denim jumper! Don’t forget about your feet. Fashionable
flats help make this a very wearable look! It’s great for a daytime jaunt to
the store or anything else!

As you can see here, just a few great
pieces can really change the look of our
foundation piece and can help make the
denim jumper one of your favorite year-
round “go to” pieces in your wardrobe.
Take my advice, you can’t go wrong if you
use your imagination and the wealth of
possibilities available at our stores to get
the most out of your fashion transition this
fall and winter!
These fall looks would not have been
possible without:
Bjorn Nasett / Stylist
Bjorn Nasett / Hair
Kenzie Wendel / Model
$5.99
It’s quite apparent that temps won’t be hitting 80°anytime soon, so
this time we enhanced our foundation garment, using a vintage bow
blouse that provided the perfect contrast for the lines of the jumper.
The button up blouse by Laura Mae was just $3.99 at Goodwill! We
also had our model don some dark tights plus her favorite pair of
boots. Just for fun we added in some faux glasses in black for that
“intellectual” look completing our fun and fabulous fall ensemble.
Keep in mind that Denim looks very appropriate when it is not faded
and lived in. Denim for work? Yes, when the wash is dark and crisp,
and the garment is not a pair of jeans!

Turn the
Tables By: Home DecÓr Expert, Merri
Autumn is upon us
I accept (grudgingly) the fact that summer is over and cold weather is coming by changing up my
décor. Fall is such a busy time of the year so I like to keep things simple. Here’s a décor tip I’d like to
share; start with a basic table centerpiece and quickly and easily change it every month.
Start with a firm foundation
The foundation for my autumn centerpiece is a basket and a pair of
candlesticks. The rustic texture, color and shape of the basket is perfect for
this time of year and it contrasts nicely with the glass candlesticks.
FallTrendsSneakPeekExperts’FallFashionsCozyRecipesDIYFallProjectsCompleteYourFall
October is easy; the centerpiece has to
have a Halloween theme! I filled the
basket with fabric pumpkins, but you
can use gourds and real pumpkins. I
covered the table with an orange runner
and gathered black tulle under the
basket. Black candles and a giant spider
round out the Halloween design.
September
For September, I started in my garden.
Phlox were in full bloom, so shades of
purple became my inspiration. Instead
of a vase, I arranged the flowers in a
low dish and set inside the basket. I
found a tablecloth and candles in lilac to
coordinate with the flowers. Next week,
I’ll bring in mums and choose a runner
and candles to match.
October
November
Once trick or treat is over, I can’t wait
for my favorite meal of the year –
Thanksgiving. This year, I wanted to
try something different so I made an
arrangement of white silk flowers with
a touch of burnt orange. Then I added
white and orange paper pumpkins and
acorns. I didn’t have the right table
runner, so I used a pair of wood
placemats. Double duty! The combination
of textures and colors will look great
through the entire month of November.
Each of these ideas will work on your dining room
table, coffee table, sideboard or mantel.

DIY Fall
Décor
It turned out so cute, I can use
		 it through Thanksgiving!
Supplies needed:
•	Leaves: fabric or paper leaves;
if you use real leaves, make
sure they are freshly fallen; they
won’t work if they are too dry
•	Mod podge
•	Sponge brush
•	Bowl
•	Plastic wrap
•	Cooking oil spray
The transition from summer to fall
happens so fast.
School starts, vacations are over and autumn
arrives. Wardrobes change, calendars fill up and
decorating colors go from cool tones to warm
ones. If you’re not ready to think Halloween yet,
try a leaf bowl for your sideboard or coffee table.
The best part, you can make it yourself.
Leaf Bowl

that’s where this
DIY project comes in!

Spray the outside of a round bottom bowl with
the cooking spray and cover with plastic wrap so
the leaves won’t stick to the dish.
Protect your work surface
with wax paper.
Apply a thick coat of Mod Podge
(MP) to the right side of the leaf
and lay it on the bowl. I used fabric
leaves (I liked the glittery look). I
removed the plastic veins from my
leaves to make them more pliable.
Continue adding leaves until the entire outside of the bowl is covered.
Paint another coat of MP over the leaves. Allow to dry overnight
(it might take longer to dry depending on the humidity). When it’s
completely dry, remove the leaves by gently pulling the plastic wrap
away from the bowl.
Note: some of the plastic wrap stuck to
the inside of my bowl. Instead of risking
ruining it, I simply added more of MP.
Paint another coat on the inside even
if the plastic comes off. It will give the
bowl more stability. Allow to dry
before using.

A Picture Can Literally Tell a Thousand Words
I’m a self-confessed book nerd. I love reading and collecting books of all kinds,
but it’s the old, tattered classics that usually grab my attention – maybe it’s the
words, maybe it’s the smell, but there’s something about a bunch of old books on a
shelf that just feels like home to me. Some might find it sacrilegious to take an old
book and turn it into something new, but I think finding new and creative ways to
display a writer’s words not only pays them tribute, but it can also be pretty cool,
too. All you need is a little imagination and a few good titles (which can easily be
found at Goodwill).
DIY Book Projects
By Jamie Klinger-Krebs, interactive media coordinator
This first project was collaboration between me and
my talented, artistic sister, Shannon Cooper. Since I
like to write and Shannon likes to paint, she took a
poem I wrote some years back and brought it to life in
a unique and creative way. Instead of simply painting
the words on a neutral background, she purchased
a used copy of Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird
(which happens to be my favorite novel of all time),
removed the pages and applied them in no particular
order to the canvas using painter’s medium matte
acrylic fixative. After allowing the pages to properly
dry, she added the poem using her own artistic touch.
The finished product was a surprise birthday gift for
me. I absolutely love it, and it’s proudly displayed in
my home office.
To accomplish a project like this, you don’t necessarily
need an artist’s touch; simply applying book pages
to a blank canvas (or even plywood) would also be a
simple and interesting piece of wall art.

back
I happened to find this project one day when I was perusing
around on Etsy.com. The example I found was a bit more
complex (and much more expensive to purchase), but it
struck me as something I could easily do, and it would still
lend the book readable (win, win)! All you need for this
project is a book, a straight edge (or ruler), an X-ACTO
knife, some tape and a photograph. In my book collection,
I just happened to have two copies of The Collected Poems
of Emily Dickinson, so I found one of my favorite photos of
my daughter and our dog and (nicely) asked my husband for
his steady measuring and cutting skills. He determined the
cut of the cover by centering the photograph and measuring
from the top and sides to the center of the cover and then
subtracted 1/8-of-an-inch in order to make the rectangle
smaller than the actual photo. He then cut through the cover
with the X-ACTO knife and I fastened the photo inside
the cover using plain-old scotch tape. You could get a little
fancier with this project and find a clear, piece of plastic or
even glass, to protect the photo, but I think it looks just fine
on my mantle exactly the way it is.

Here at Goodwill we live by the model of reduce, reuse, recycle, and though it seems small, sometimes
just the simple act of taking something old and turning it into something new can have a lasting impact.
Donating and recycling old books not only gives them new life, but it also helps keep them out of
landfills. In my opinion, as long as we’re not burning them, upcycling an old book is just one more way
to preserve a great literary work of art.
back
I don’t know about you, but even though
I have a plethora of books in my house, I
never have enough coasters. So, this idea
was actually a product of Project #2, and it’s
just one more way to recycle every piece of
an old book when creating projects like the
two above. Again, there’s probably ways to
get much fancier with this project, but being
as I’m a novice do-it-yourselfer, I simply
took the cut-out piece of the book cover we
used in Project #2, added some tape around
the edges, and voila, you have a coaster! (It
works well for my morning coffee.) In the
future I plan to expand on this project by
finding cool, old titles with rough covers and
hopefully building a larger library-themed
coaster collection in my living room.

DIY Painted Wooded Spoons
By Kelly Dudzinski, Marketing Coordinator
http://www.littlebitfunky.com/2012/03/painting-wooden-spoons.html
http://www.earnesthomeco.com/?s=wooden+spoons
Supplies needed:
•	Wooden Spoon(s)
•	Acrylic Craft Paint(s)
•	Paint Brush
•	Painter’s Tape
•	Shellac Spray or Paint
(natural, non-toxic)
•	Protective mask (optional)
Tape each wooden spoon with painter’s tape to
mark off the area you would like to paint.
Dip brush in paint and begin applying a single
coat of paint to each of the wooden spoons.
TIP: Rest spoons so that the wet paint does not
touch anything. I rested mine on disposable
plates to ensure easy clean-up.
Let spoons dry
completely before
applying a second
coat of paint. Once
completely dried,
remove painter’s tape.
While wearing your
protective mask in a
well ventilated area,
apply a thin layer
of shellac spray.
Let dry.
TIP: Be sure

Hang your
wreath on your
front door.
My husband and I will be moving to a new home this Fall, and as anyone who
has recently moved knows there is a lot of stress and craziness involved with
the whole process. As a way to de-stress, relax and make the new house feel
like home I thought it would be fun to create a new Fall decoration to add to
our collection. Since I don’t have a lot of free time, I wanted my DIY project to
be simple yet unique. So I decided to create a fall wreath, with a bit of a twist.
DIY Flannel Wreath
By Pam Pierson, Multimedia Manager
Supplies needed:
•	14 inch Styrofoam wreath
(can purchase from any
|craft store)
•	Fall themed picks (at
Goodwill or any craft store)
•	Hot glue gun & glue
•	Jeans
•	Flannel shirt
•	Stick pins
•	Scissors
•	Ruler
Cut the button strip
from the flannel shirt.
Use this as your loop to
hang your wreath. Cut
loop the desired length.
Glue the ends together
and pin to the inside of
the wreath. Let glue dry.
Cut off the arms of the flannel shirt. Then,
cut three to four, 1 in.-2 in. wide strips of
material from the flannel shirt. Cut off the
pant legs of the jeans. Then, cut three to
four, 1 in.-2 in. wide strips of material
from the jeans.
Place the Fall picks on the wreath
(anywhere you would like!).
Secure with glue if needed.
1.
2.
Secure the end of the first flannel strip
with a stick pin (and glue for a more secure
hold) and wrap around the wreath.
Pick up where the first flannel strip ended.
Secure the end of the first jean strip with a
stick pin (and glue for a more secure hold)
and continue to wrap around the wreath.
Alternate the flannel and the jean strips
until the entire wreath is covered.

  • 4. 4 back Sneak Peek Back to Cool Red Plaid Stand-out Tights Carwash Pleats Fall Trends While we are certainly sad to see the summer season go, we can’t help but be excited for the change that fall brings. There’s just something about the transition from summer to fall that’s invigorating to the spirit. Rather than dreading the cold months ahead, let’s take some time to embrace the coming fall colors and styles with a sneak peek of our upcoming fall clothing and home décor trends! Keep checking back on AmazingGoodwill.com, for the full article to go live, when the fall season hits at the end of September! Big Jewelry More polished than fringe, but still provides that hint of edge; we’re definitely intrigued with this trend! We don’t doubt you’ll love the sophisticated hint of skin provided by carwash pleats. Photo Credit: www.celebrityfashionista.com You really can’t go wrong with a good dose of tartan in the fall season. Going for the standard red look is not only trending this year, but is also a great way to add a pop of color to fall’s neutrals. We’re not talking the typical beige or black tights; think of color, texture and fun prints. Fall has a pair of tights for every personality. And they pair well with a variety of outfits – bonus! We went from small and minimal during the summer, to big and sparkly this fall! We’re lovin’ the bold statement made by jewelry this season. • 5. Collections on Display Trays At Goodwill, we love collections; our stores are full of great items for gatherers of all sorts, from vases and tea cups, to wall art and accent pillows! Lucky for us, fall is all about putting these collections front and center. We love that displaying collections gives a curated look (also trending for fall!), and it’s so easy to pull off. Trays are perfect for those of us who want to display various items, but want an organized look too. Trays slowly made their way into home décor this summer, but for fall, you’ll see them everywhere! With a variety of shapes, colors and sizes, this trend is one we can all pull off! Ultramarine Accents Each season, we look for that shade of color that is popping up everywhere in the home décor world. Ultramarine dove right in to fall, and rightly so; it’s glossy, vibrant and just so stunning! Look for this great hue in home décor accessories and paint colors. While the fashion world is avoiding neutrals this fall, home décor is craving them! Neutrals are being seen as fresh rather than dull. All you need is texture and shape to bring them to life! • 8. 8 This affordable, tasty dish combines the classic fall flavor of sweet potatoes with a mexican twist! Chorizo Sweet Potato Skillet (from budgetbytes.com) Prep: 10 min Cook: 45 min Serves: 6 Ingredients 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 medium (1 lb.) sweet potato 1/2 lb. mexican chorizo 1 (15 oz.) can black beans 1 cup uncooked long grain white rice 1 cup green or red salsa 1 3/4 cup chicken broth 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese 2-3 green onions, sliced Peel and dice the sweet potato into 1/2 to 3/4 inch cubes. Size matters – make them small. Sauté the sweet potato cubes into a large skillet with olive oil over medium heat for about 5 minutes or until the sweet potatoes have softened about halfway through (they’ll cook more later). Squeeze the chorizo out of its casing into the skillet with the sweet potatoes. Sauté the chorizo and sweet potatoes together, breaking the chorizo up into small pieces as it browns. Once the chorizo fully browns, pour off any excess grease. Rinse and drain the back beans. Add the beans, salsa and uncooked rice to the skillet. Stir them into the sweet potatoes and chorizo until everything is well combined. Add the chicken broth, stir briefly, then place a lid on the skillet. Allow the contents of the skillet to come up to a boil, then turn the heat down to low. Let the skillet simmer on low for 30 minutes. Make sure it is simmering the whole time (you should be able to hear it quietly simmer away). If it’s not, turn up the heat slightly. After 30 minutes the rice should be tender and have absorbed all of the liquid. Turn off the heat, fluff the mixture, sprinkle the cheese on top, then retun the lid to trap the residual heat and help the cheese melt. Sprinkle the chopped onions on top, serve and enjoy! turn page $1.26per serving the colors and flavors of fall FallTrendsSneakPeekExperts’FallFashionsCozyRecipesDIYFallProjectsCompleteYourFall
  • 9. 9 Roasted Pumpkin Seeds We love carving pumpkins in our house each fall. They are always unique and fun, and we love letting our boys draw their designs and see their creativity shine. We also LOVE pumpkin seeds! Everyone seems to have their own way of roasting, but here is our tried and true method that never fails. Fill your sink or a large bowl with water. Seed your pumpkin, removing all pulp and flesh from the seeds and place them in the water. The water will help you remove any residual pulp. Then – and this is the secret to great pumpkin seeds – transfer your seeds to a large storage container, and fill it with three tablespoons of salt and a gallon of water. Close the lid and place in your refrigerator for at least 24 hours, shaking the container a couple of times to mix the seeds. Preheat the oven to 250 degrees. Place one generous tablespoon of olive oil on a rimmed baking sheet, then spread an even layer of seeds on the sheet. Depending on how many seeds your pumpkins yield and how big your baking sheet is, you may need more than one sheet. Add salt to taste and mix the seeds, salt and oil together to coat. Now add your spices. Our standby is Penzey’s Mural of Flavor, the mix gives the seeds a unique and delicious flavor. We usually do a large pan of those, and then I do smaller pans with interesting mixes. By Kyla Mrazek, Marketing Projects Manager Bake your seeds for 1 hour at 250 degrees. Stir the seeds and put them back in the oven for another 30 to 60 minutes, testing for doneness throughout. Unlike store bought seeds that are pure white, these should be roasted until they turn a golden brown, which enhances their flavor. Stored in an airtight container, the seeds will be good for 3 to 4 weeks. If they last that long! 1. 3. 2. 4. Spicy: Use cayenne pepper or hot sauce Sweet & Salty: Cinnamon and salt (add sugar during the last 20 minutes of cooking) Indian: Toss with garam masala Asian: Use soy sauce (adjust salt in recipe) and a drizzle of honey Italian: Add dried Italian seasoning or oregano, and then add parmesan cheese during the last 10 minutes of baking Here are some ideas we’ve done that are delicious: The season’s signature snack! • 10. 10 Autumn m Style Fall isn’t complete unless you’re making a Goodwill style statement! Make yours with Fashion Expert Bjorn’s Fall Fashions and Home Décor Expert Merri’s Fall Foundations for the Home. FallTrendsSneakPeekExperts’FallFashionsCozyRecipesDIYFallProjectsCompleteYourFall
  • 11. 11 As the summer winds down and fall approaches in the wink of an eye, the changes in fashion also must keep pace with the fluctuations of the thermometer.  That means having items in your wardrobe that can segue from the hot and humid last gasps of summer in September, all the way to the inevitable winter of November. I’m going to show you how a few items of clothing, foundation pieces, that can create looks to work through this transitional time of year. I decided that denim, the workhorse of fashion, is what should be featured on these pages. It is our foundation piece for all of these looks. Denim is the great equalizer. Everyone can wear denim in one way or another, but for our purposes I focused on a fantastic denim jumper by Aqua Blues found at one of our stores for $5.99. It was made of 95% cotton denim with 5% spandex for some stretch. The dark blue indigo color looked fresh and it also had topstitching and some darting to help create a nice fit. These are details that will make any garment more versatile in your wardrobe. Found at Goodwill for $5.99! Fall FashionTriple Play! By: Fashion Expert, Bjorn Nasett Typically September temps can still flirt near 80 degrees so we wanted to maintain a summerly feel. Our first look features our jumper plus some statement jewelry in metallic gold with multicolor stones. The long dangle earrings and chain link belt added some drama and a bit of southwestern flair. Our model just needed some cool sandals to complete the look! This is perfect for a Labor Day picnic or any other pursuit that requires more than just jeans and a tank top. September FallTrendsSneakPeekExperts’FallFashionsCozyRecipesDIYFallProjectsCompleteYourFall
  • 12. 12 As the temperatures begin to drop we need to add on to our ensemble to keep warm! For our second look we layered on a slouchy muted floral print cardigan, added a great denim belt that was wide and helped define the waistline, and used a floral scarf as a headband. The floral softens the look of the denim and the soft shape of the cardigan is a nice play off of the clean lines of the denim jumper! Don’t forget about your feet. Fashionable flats help make this a very wearable look! It’s great for a daytime jaunt to the store or anything else! A slouchy floral print cardigan softens the look of the denim $3.99 October FallTrendsSneakPeekExperts’FallFashionsCozyRecipesDIYFallProjectsCompleteYourFall
  • 13. 13 As you can see here, just a few great pieces can really change the look of our foundation piece and can help make the denim jumper one of your favorite year- round “go to” pieces in your wardrobe. Take my advice, you can’t go wrong if you use your imagination and the wealth of possibilities available at our stores to get the most out of your fashion transition this fall and winter! These fall looks would not have been possible without: Bjorn Nasett / Stylist Bjorn Nasett / Hair Kenzie Wendel / Model $5.99 It’s quite apparent that temps won’t be hitting 80°anytime soon, so this time we enhanced our foundation garment, using a vintage bow blouse that provided the perfect contrast for the lines of the jumper. The button up blouse by Laura Mae was just $3.99 at Goodwill! We also had our model don some dark tights plus her favorite pair of boots. Just for fun we added in some faux glasses in black for that “intellectual” look completing our fun and fabulous fall ensemble. Keep in mind that Denim looks very appropriate when it is not faded and lived in. Denim for work? Yes, when the wash is dark and crisp, and the garment is not a pair of jeans! November FallTrendsSneakPeekExperts’FallFashionsCozyRecipesDIYFallProjectsCompleteYourFall
  • 14. 14 back Turn the Tables By: Home DecÓr Expert, Merri Autumn is upon us I accept (grudgingly) the fact that summer is over and cold weather is coming by changing up my décor. Fall is such a busy time of the year so I like to keep things simple. Here’s a décor tip I’d like to share; start with a basic table centerpiece and quickly and easily change it every month. Start with a firm foundation The foundation for my autumn centerpiece is a basket and a pair of candlesticks. The rustic texture, color and shape of the basket is perfect for this time of year and it contrasts nicely with the glass candlesticks. FallTrendsSneakPeekExperts’FallFashionsCozyRecipesDIYFallProjectsCompleteYourFall
  • 15. October is easy; the centerpiece has to have a Halloween theme! I filled the basket with fabric pumpkins, but you can use gourds and real pumpkins. I covered the table with an orange runner and gathered black tulle under the basket. Black candles and a giant spider round out the Halloween design. September For September, I started in my garden. Phlox were in full bloom, so shades of purple became my inspiration. Instead of a vase, I arranged the flowers in a low dish and set inside the basket. I found a tablecloth and candles in lilac to coordinate with the flowers. Next week, I’ll bring in mums and choose a runner and candles to match. October November Once trick or treat is over, I can’t wait for my favorite meal of the year – Thanksgiving. This year, I wanted to try something different so I made an arrangement of white silk flowers with a touch of burnt orange. Then I added white and orange paper pumpkins and acorns. I didn’t have the right table runner, so I used a pair of wood placemats. Double duty! The combination of textures and colors will look great through the entire month of November. Each of these ideas will work on your dining room table, coffee table, sideboard or mantel. FallTrendsSneakPeekExperts’FallFashionsCozyRecipesDIYFallProjectsCompleteYourFall 15
  • 16. 16 DIY m Autumn Whether you refer to it as homemade, or do-it-yourself, every season could use that special one-of-a-kind touch that only DIY can give. These fall projects are no different! FallTrendsSneakPeekExperts’FallFashionsCozyRecipesDIYFallProjectsCompleteYourFall
  • 17. 17 back DIY Fall Décor It turned out so cute, I can use it through Thanksgiving! Supplies needed: • Leaves: fabric or paper leaves; if you use real leaves, make sure they are freshly fallen; they won’t work if they are too dry • Mod podge • Sponge brush • Bowl • Plastic wrap • Cooking oil spray The transition from summer to fall happens so fast. School starts, vacations are over and autumn arrives. Wardrobes change, calendars fill up and decorating colors go from cool tones to warm ones. If you’re not ready to think Halloween yet, try a leaf bowl for your sideboard or coffee table. The best part, you can make it yourself. Leaf Bowl By: Home DecÓr Expert, Merri Autumn colors and crisp breezes turns our decorating focus inward – that’s where this DIY project comes in! FallTrendsSneakPeekExperts’FallFashionsCozyRecipesDIYFallProjectsCompleteYourFall
  • 18. 18 Spray the outside of a round bottom bowl with the cooking spray and cover with plastic wrap so the leaves won’t stick to the dish. Protect your work surface with wax paper. Apply a thick coat of Mod Podge (MP) to the right side of the leaf and lay it on the bowl. I used fabric leaves (I liked the glittery look). I removed the plastic veins from my leaves to make them more pliable. Continue adding leaves until the entire outside of the bowl is covered. Paint another coat of MP over the leaves. Allow to dry overnight (it might take longer to dry depending on the humidity). When it’s completely dry, remove the leaves by gently pulling the plastic wrap away from the bowl. Note: some of the plastic wrap stuck to the inside of my bowl. Instead of risking ruining it, I simply added more of MP. Paint another coat on the inside even if the plastic comes off. I love reading and collecting books of all kinds, but it’s the old, tattered classics that usually grab my attention – maybe it’s the words, maybe it’s the smell, but there’s something about a bunch of old books on a shelf that just feels like home to me. Some might find it sacrilegious to take an old book and turn it into something new, but I think finding new and creative ways to display a writer’s words not only pays them tribute, but it can also be pretty cool, too. All you need is a little imagination and a few good titles (which can easily be found at Goodwill). DIY Book Projects By Jamie Klinger-Krebs, interactive media coordinator This first project was collaboration between me and my talented, artistic sister, Shannon Cooper. Since I like to write and Shannon likes to paint, she took a poem I wrote some years back and brought it to life in a unique and creative way. Instead of simply painting the words on a neutral background, she purchased a used copy of Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird (which happens to be my favorite novel of all time), removed the pages and applied them in no particular order to the canvas using painter’s medium matte acrylic fixative. After allowing the pages to properly dry, she added the poem using her own artistic touch. The finished product was a surprise birthday gift for me. I absolutely love it, and it’s proudly displayed in my home office. To accomplish a project like this, you don’t necessarily need an artist’s touch; simply applying book pages to a blank canvas (or even plywood) would also be a simple and interesting piece of wall art. • 20. 20 back I happened to find this project one day when I was perusing around on Etsy.com. The example I found was a bit more complex (and much more expensive to purchase), but it struck me as something I could easily do, and it would still lend the book readable (win, win)! All you need for this project is a book, a straight edge (or ruler), an X-ACTO knife, some tape and a photograph. In my book collection, I just happened to have two copies of The Collected Poems of Emily Dickinson, so I found one of my favorite photos of my daughter and our dog and (nicely) asked my husband for his steady measuring and cutting skills. He determined the cut of the cover by centering the photograph and measuring from the top and sides to the center of the cover and then subtracted 1/8-of-an-inch in order to make the rectangle smaller than the actual photo. He then cut through the cover with the X-ACTO knife and I fastened the photo inside the cover using plain-old scotch tape. You could get a little fancier with this project and find a clear, piece of plastic or even glass, to protect the photo, but I think it looks just fine on my mantle exactly the way it is. • 21. 21 Here at Goodwill we live by the model of reduce, reuse, recycle, and though it seems small, sometimes just the simple act of taking something old and turning it into something new can have a lasting impact. Donating and recycling old books not only gives them new life, but it also helps keep them out of landfills. In my opinion, as long as we’re not burning them, upcycling an old book is just one more way to preserve a great literary work of art. back I don’t know about you, but even though I have a plethora of books in my house, I never have enough coasters. So, this idea was actually a product of Project #2, and it’s just one more way to recycle every piece of an old book when creating projects like the two above. Again, there’s probably ways to get much fancier with this project, but being as I’m a novice do-it-yourselfer, I simply took the cut-out piece of the book cover we used in Project #2, added some tape around the edges, and voila, you have a coaster! (It works well for my morning coffee.) In the future I plan to expand on this project by finding cool, old titles with rough covers and hopefully building a larger library-themed coaster collection in my living room. Book Cover Coasters Project 3 Use the leftover book cover piece from the book picture frame project to make a cute coaster! • 22. 22 DIY Painted Wooded Spoons By Kelly Dudzinski, Marketing Coordinator http://www.littlebitfunky.com/2012/03/painting-wooden-spoons.html http://www.earnesthomeco.com/?s=wooden+spoons Supplies needed: • Wooden Spoon(s) • Acrylic Craft Paint(s) • Paint Brush • Painter’s Tape • Shellac Spray or Paint (natural, non-toxic) • Protective mask (optional) Tape each wooden spoon with painter’s tape to mark off the area you would like to paint. Dip brush in paint and begin applying a single coat of paint to each of the wooden spoons. TIP: Rest spoons so that the wet paint does not touch anything. I rested mine on disposable plates to ensure easy clean-up. Let spoons dry completely before applying a second coat of paint. Once completely dried, remove painter’s tape. While wearing your protective mask in a well ventilated area, apply a thin layer of shellac spray. Let dry. TIP: Be sure to hand wash spoons to ensure longer use. 1. 2. 3. • 23. 23 Hang your wreath on your front door. My husband and I will be moving to a new home this Fall, and as anyone who has recently moved knows there is a lot of stress and craziness involved with the whole process. As a way to de-stress, relax and make the new house feel like home I thought it would be fun to create a new Fall decoration to add to our collection. Since I don’t have a lot of free time, I wanted my DIY project to be simple yet unique. So I decided to create a fall wreath, with a bit of a twist. DIY Flannel Wreath By Pam Pierson, Multimedia Manager Supplies needed: • 14 inch Styrofoam wreath (can purchase from any |craft store) • Fall themed picks (at Goodwill or any craft store) • Hot glue gun & glue • Jeans • Flannel shirt • Stick pins • Scissors • Ruler Cut the button strip from the flannel shirt. Use this as your loop to hang your wreath. Cut loop the desired length. Glue the ends together and pin to the inside of the wreath. Let glue dry. Cut off the arms of the flannel shirt. Then, cut three to four, 1 in.-2 in. wide strips of material from the flannel shirt. Cut off the pant legs of the jeans. Then, cut three to four, 1 in.-2 in. wide strips of material from the jeans. Place the Fall picks on the wreath (anywhere you would like!). Secure with glue if needed. 1. 2. Secure the end of the first flannel strip with a stick pin (and glue for a more secure hold) and wrap around the wreath. Pick up where the first flannel strip ended. Secure the end of the first jean strip with a stick pin (and glue for a more secure hold) and continue to wrap around the wreath. Alternate the flannel and the jean strips until the entire wreath is covered. 3. FallTrendsSneakPeekExperts’FallFashionsCozyRecipesDIYFallProjectsCompleteYourFall
