Editor's Notes
Seth Godin is the author of the very popular marketing blogsethgodin.typepad.com. His blog was named the #1 business blog by AdAge top 150 blogs. He is also the author of ten books that have made bestsellers lists around the world. His book tribes was a nationwide bestseller. The Miami Herald called it the best business book of 2008. Godin was the founder and CEO of Yoyodyne marketing company. He is now a full time speaker, blogger, and writer.
Marketing is about engaging the tribe with products services with stories that spread. The way we have been marketed to has caused society to always want what is new. Established in 1906 used to be a positive sign for a business, now it has the connotation of being old and outdated. Take for example the company Apple who introduced the iPhone in 2007, they have subsequently released a new version of the iPhone each year since it has been released. Today’s market doesn’t want what it wanted yesterday.
I was surprised that Godin said the tactics you use are irrelevant, whether its twitter, email, facebook, or whatever mode of communication you use. Due to the fact that the modes we use to communicate are always changing. The important thing to realize is that each day it is easier to strengthen your relationship with the people who choose to follow you. For example there are apps being worked on that allows live video phone capabilites on your smartphone. A true fan brings you more people that you can convert into true fans.
What are going to be the new tactics of communication as we progress? Where else is there to go in terms of modes of communication and social media networking sites? How are these things going to be incorporated into education, from higher learning institutions to elementary schools. Are there going to be classes to teach people how grow as leaders and help them build their tribes.
I would definitely recommend this book. I learned a lot from it.
