How to develop apps for wearable devices – Apple's Patents Analysis
Recently, Samsung launched the Galaxy Gear Smartwatch, which was not much appreciated and was
tagged as an expensive smartphone accessory that was not essential.
Rumors are going around since months that Apple is working on iWatch, which will be much better from
the functional standpoint, and will include features like music control, security, lighting, energy use,
entertainment, and the like.
A quick way to check out future trends is to search US patent office (USPTO) database. Apple has
already filed various patents that disclose exciting features which may be seen in wearable gadgets that
will be released by Apple in near future.
One such patent discloses a wearable accessory device that includes a flexible display coupled to a bi-
stable spring, wherein coupling the display to the bi-stable spring allows the accessory device to be
easily worn in a number of convenient locations. http://www.google.com/patents/US20130044215
Another patent has been granted to Apple that claims an activity monitor comprising: housing for
attachment to a person; at least one accelerometer disposed within the housing; and a processor
disposed within the housing, for processing signals from the accelerometer to assess activity of the
person. http://www.google.com/patents/US7512515
So, this is an illustration of features that can be expected in future wearable gadgets by Apple.
Developers can take a note of these features and design their apps accordingly, because whenever these
next generation of device becomes main stream, their success and market penetration will majorly
depend upon the quality of apps available to the users.
