The Charles River in Boston has suffered from pollution for many decades but recent efforts have led to significant improvements in water quality. A long-term project to upgrade sewer systems and prevent sewage overflows has helped reduce bacteria levels and made the river safer for recreational activities like swimming and boating. While more progress is still needed, water sampling shows the Charles River is much cleaner now than in the past.
